Δύσκολο βιβλίο όμως από αυτά που σε επιβραβεύουν πλουσιοπάροχα στο τέλος τους και σου μένουν. Μερικές φορές οι πραγματικότητα στέκεται βαρίδι στην ανάγνωση, όμως ο Τάιμπο αναγγέλλει: η λογοτεχνία μπορεί να κάνει καλύτερη την πραγματικότητα (ή κάτι παρόμοιο).

Este es uno de esos libros que uno no quiere terminar. Me ha gustado tanto que cuando terminé me sentí triste.
Leerlo en inglés me parece que fue un error, como el mismo dice en el libro "English does not really suit my own disheveled prose, I leave too many substantive nouns out". Igual, kudos al traductor que conserva muy bien el lado jocoso del autor.
Nota a mi misma: conseguir más libros de Taibo en español.

Actually, this was the second time that I read
Leonardo's Bicycle
. I had read theMartin Michael Roberts 1995 translation of Paco Ignacio Taibo's 1993 novel La bicicleta de Leonardo back in the 1990s along with some other detective/ crime fiction by this author. I was a big fan of his. However, of everything of Taibo's that I read back then I enjoyed his
Leonardo's Bicycle
the most. Lately, I've been reading a lot of crappy crime fiction. So, I decided to return to this old favorite.
The novel is a collection of four intertwining stories that center on a Mexico City crime writer named José Daniel Fierro's fascination with Karen Turner who is a woman collegiate basketball player from the University of Texas at Austin. When the Lady Longhorn is assaulted and injured in Ciudad Juarez, Fierro travels to the border town to rescue her. The other stories are about an anarchist and his journalist friend in pre-Franco Barcelona, a former spook for the CIA who is looking to retire, and the genius of Leonardo da Vinci. Incredible as it might seem, all the stories come together to make a great novel. This noir crime fiction at its finest.
Taibo is better known for his novels about the one-eyed Mexican detective Hector Belascoaran Shayne. Nevertheless, the quixotic, mystery-solving, crime-writing José Daniel Fierro is a great character, too. Like the Belascoaran series, this novel paints a very realistic portrait of Mexico in 1993 Mexico. I don't know, of course, but I can helped but think that Taibo's gritty and realistic crime novels influenced the writing of Roberto Bolaño and Carlos Ruiz Zafon.
Even though Taibo is a first tier intellectual, historian, sociologist and political writer, I wish that he wrote more fiction. Happily there's at least one more Fierro novel (and-at least for me-some new Belascoaran novels) that I hope to read. I also plan to keep and reread Leonardo's Bicycle again. Enjoy.

7 días y 368 páginas después. Uno de los libros que más me ha generado pereza, después de haber comenzando tan bien. De hecho, es una excelente premisa, pero el hecho de mezclar tres (o cuatro) historias diferentes, no me pareció lo indicado y mató la historia. La trama sencilla era buena, sin necesidad de querer profundizar tanto.
Me gusta mucho la narrativa, las ideas y los escritos de Taibo II, pero definitivamente este no fue un acierto. Jamás pude conectarme a la historia y tantas variables no hicieron más que empobrecer la historia.
Sin embargo habrá más de el en el blog, y muy probablemente haya reseña. Lastima que se nos fue algo que parecía prometedor.
Me gusta mucho la narrativa, las ideas y los escritos de Taibo II, pero definitivamente este no fue un acierto. Jamás pude conectarme a la historia y tantas variables no hicieron más que empobrecer la historia.

Taibo does not write--he rampages, making life difficult for any reader seeking smooth, creamy fiction. His half digested, gristle-filled pages jump time, logic and linearity, inducting you into a latin, he-man, mad-man book. Forget Márquez’ realism magico. Think speed-driven, nightmare real.
No namby-pamby bedside manner from Taibo. You work. He labored for you over his crazed connections, so you must knit his jagged cuts of history, surgery, crime, and sex with a seven footer into a story. Taibo does nothing for you, until the end.
There he does land his strange creature of a book with the wings on and other body parts mostly intact while his surrogate writer hero drifts off into happy endings and a call to buy an earlier book. Go read it and wonder why the book has not done better. It should have.

Divertidísimo, ágil y muy bien escrito, con un muy buen balance entre complejidad y simpleza. El humor de Paco Ignacio Taibo II está en uno de sus mejores momentos, así como su crítica es afilada. Varias historias aparentemente sin conexión, que finalmente se unen entre sí de una manera muy fluida e interesante. Buena reflexión sobre la relación medio antagónica entre realidad y ficción. Interesante descripción del oficio del novelista. Personajes buenísimos, redondos, sin estereotipos ni grandilocuencias jaladas. El lenguaje coloquial es casi tan bueno como en Cosa Fácil. Lo mejor que he leido de este autor.

Το "Με τέσσερα χέρια" και το "Η σκιά της σκιάς" που έχω διαβάσει παλιότερα μου δημιούργησαν υψηλότερες προσδοκίες για το συγκεκριμένο μυθιστόρημα. Η γραφή του Ταΐμπο είναι πάντα γοητευτική, το ιδιαίτερο χιούμορ του ευπρόσδεκτο, η πλοκή με τους πρωταγωνιστές να δρουν σε ευρύ χρονικό φάσμα κρατά το ενδιαφέρον σε ψηλό επίπεδο αλλά... Νομίζω ότι η υπερβολή σε κάποιες σκηνές δράσης ξεφεύγει και η ιδεολογική του εμμονή αφήνει σε αυτό το βιβλίο άλλα στοιχεία της προσωπικότητας των ηρώων του σε δευτερεύοντα ρόλο αντίθετα με τα προαναφερθέντα μυθιστορήματα.

Erano anni che non leggevo nulla di Paco Ignacio Taibo II... ammetto che le prime pagine sono state faticose, con il saltare da una storia all'altra e con un numero sempre crescente di situazioni surreali. Fatta l'abitudine, la lettura procede piacevole, tra un Leonardo da Vinci impegnato a inseguire i suoi sogni, un giustiziere barcellonese e il mistero di una giocatrice di basket gringa che è stata rapita e a cui è stato asportato un rene... Insomma, non ci si annoia!

Το μπλέξιμο των ιστοριών του Τάιμπο σε καθηλώνει. Μόνο αρνητικό τα εναλλάξ κεφάλαια του Λεονάρντο που σου παρατείνουν την αγωνία. Τέχνασμα του Τάιμπο που προσωπικά μόνο δε μου άρεσε, χωρίς να υπολείπεται σε τίποτα της τρομερής του γραφής.

I happen to be the translator of this book, and must say I really enjoyed the challenge it posed. The novel has several sub-plots and themes which start off looking like an anarchic romp, but in the end it all comes together masterfully.

Un noir “creativo” e adrenalinico che si diverte a mescolare schemi e trame, intrecciando storie e piani temporali senza perdere la bussola, che in questi esperimenti letterari è il rischio più grosso, il guazzabuglio senza capo ne coda.
Il punto di partenza potrebbe essere lo scrittore fallito che con una gamba ingessata trascorre le giornate a Città del Messico guardando in televisione il basket femminile texano non per il gioco in se ma per le giocatrici, gambe e tutto il resto… poi la sua preferita viene rapita e ritrovata a Ciudad Juarez (una delle città più tranquille del pianeta) senza un rene: così tra realtà e fantasia inizia una spericolata indagine in compagnia della ragazza per cercare i colpevoli… Sta anche tentando di scrivere un romanzo sul nonno anarchico nella Barcellona degli anni venti e allora vai con storie di scioperi, attentati, repressioni e scontri con la polizia in un periodo concitato e rivoluzionario con protagonista, oltre al camaleontico anarchico, un giornalista amante della ,verità ad ogni costo, braccato e censurato, con pochi mesi di vita in quanto affetto da una tisi galoppante… E poi Leonardo di cui si raccontano i progetti, le iniziative spesso incompiute, dall’affresco di Anghiari alle tecniche di recupero delle navi affondate fino al disegno della famosa bicicletta, vero o falso che sia, Leonardo che con le sue intuizioni dimostrò l’impossibilità dell’impossibile…
Infine gli ultimi giorni prima della caduta di Saigon nel 1975: l’arrivo dei Viet, l’evacuazione dell’ambasciata americana, la disperazione dei vietnamiti compromessi con il regime agli sgoccioli e un agente CIA chiamato a sistemare i traffici di droga con i boss locali prima dell’addio…
Tre linee narrative, anzi quattro raccontate a capitoli alterni, una girandola di eventi e di colpi di scena che possono disorientare e stordire il lettore, ma Taibo è bravo e ogni tassello sarà collocato al suo posto (con molta fantasia e poca logica…). Divertente e intrigante fino alla conclusione senza mai girare a vuoto smarrendosi tra tanti rivoli, che all’inizio non appare così scontato. Tre stelle e mezzo

No conecté con ninguna de las historias y como estas convergen por lo que no me quedó nada que recordar de esta novela. Lo inverosímil de las situaciones provocaron que mi interés cayera a cero.
Si quiso romper el esquema de las novelas policiales, no me gustó la forma.
En Goodreads figura una sola edición, incluso sin foto de tapa. ¿Será muestra del poco interés en la historia?

Presentó para mí, un nuevo reto literario. No era lo que esperaba pero justo eso fue lo que me gustó. Me hubiera encantado una relación más sorprendente entre cada historia contada. La narrativa es exquisita.

A terrific, multi-storied novel that crosses timelines, mysticism, noir-like Barcelona in early 20th century, and beautifully plays with the traditional storytelling methods. It al comes together and we get to glean more bits from Leonardo daVinci, the Magus. Great stuff.

Me gusto mucho que estuviera de personaje el mago Leonardo Padura, hablara de la vida de Leonardo Da Vinci y el pasaje de Rulfo viene a Comala a buscar a basquetbolistas gringas.

Para los amantes de la prosa literaria, este libro es un exquisito bocado literario. Hay un relato al estilo de ensayo referido a Leonardo Da Vinci, a la vez que, en otra línea, va relatando las desventuras de un escritor, escrito en futuro; junto con el relato de la novela que está escribiendo el mencionado escritor, se relatan hechos pasados y presentes de un ex-agente de la CIA.
Para los amantes de la lectura, este libro está escrito con capítulos cortos que te van llevando, muy de a poco y casi deliberadamente, a intentar de no parar de leer.
Entretenido y recomendable.

Un romanziere messicano aiuta una cestista americana a scoprire chi le ha rubato un rene. Nel frattempo scrive la storia di anarchici spagnoli, in cui si interseca la storia delle invenzioni di Leonardo. Bel libro, che soffre dell'eccessivo intrecciarsi delle sotto-trame. Andrebbe letto d'un fiato per essere apprezzato e non perdere il filo.

A great book from Ignacio. If you find a translation, make sure to get it. Great history and a wonderful hero. Ignacio is able to thread this novel with mastery.

Taibo tiene un talento especial. A pesar de que sus finales no son felices, no del todo, me dejan con una sonrisa. Voy a extrañar a José Daniel Fierro, a Karen Turner, hasta a Jerry.
