Darcy Parrish gets a temporary job as a chef for handsome Patrick Judson. Darcy has a spinal injury and has to use a wheelchair. She is living at Able House (an assisted living facility) in which Patrick is the chief benefactor. He has been caring for his three younger sisters since their parents’ death. He has also inherited his parents’ wealth and is trying to do good with it. Patrick is finding himself attracted to pretty and independent Darcy. With his sisters all grown up, he is able to go out in the world and do things he has always wanted to do. But he is finding it hard to leave Darcy. I really enjoyed this romance. Patrick was a great hero, he was so thoughtful and caring. Darcy was a good and interesting heroine. She really wanted to be a policewoman but had to give up her dream after her accident.

A sweet, feel-good romance by Myrna Mackenzie.

I know personally from following author Myrna Mackenzie's blog that she has an inquiring mind and a lively curiosity. She is just as interesting as the characters and story lines that she creates. With "Hired: Cinderella Chef", we are given a heroine who experienced a terrible tragedy and chose to thrive rather than just survive. Darcy Parrish loved working as a law enforcement officer. A life-changing auto accident left her in a wheelchair and forced her to seek out a new career. She lost more than just the use of her legs in the accident. She also lost the baby she was expecting, and was soon abandoned by the baby's father. Starting over in a new and very different life, she became an accomplished chef. Patrick Judson inherited his family's wealth and the care of his three younger sisters when he was just eighteen years old. A caring man who feels the responsibility of his wealth, Patrick is the sponsor for the assisted living facility for people with spinal-cord injuries where Darcy resides. When Darcy is chosen for a temporary position as the chef for Patrick's estate, she is thrilled with the opportunity to really make use of her skills in the kitchen. She never expected the attraction that would grow between her and her kind and handsome employer, nor was she prepared for his determination to have her "meet and mingle" with his guests. Patrick is quite taken with Darcy, and his fascination with her wars with his desire to finally undertake his great world tour. After raising his three sisters and seeing them comfortably "settled", Patrick had planned to spread his wings and travel for an extended period of time. He never dreamed a beguiling blonde with beautiful brown eyes and just the right amount of sass to keep him in line would make him reconsider his long time travel plans. Patrick's sisters are not keen on the blooming romance between him and Darcy, and they try to keep the two apart. The mutual attraction is too strong to deny, and a complicated involvement ensues. Patrick and Darcy both have issues to resolve, and they later part ways in order not to stand in the way of each other's happiness. However, hearts often have ideas of their own, and longing and loneliness will often change the most convinced of minds. Sometimes the heart knows best. "Hired: Cinderella Chef" is a part of Harlequin's "In Her Shoes" series.

Part of my recent disability fiction glom, quick and easy read. I had some issues with the main character considering herself burdensome to the hero, and his family agreeing with her, but it was handled mostly well. She wasn't a pushover, which nice to see... it just wasn't the most interesting story, I don't think.

Good of This Kind

I started this book in the hope that it would provide a stimulating take on the Disabled Hero theme, namely, by featuring a female MC. Regrettably, it was basically a very well written conventional romance, with all the typical "oh, I can't/oh, I shouldn't/but I must/but I can't help myself kiss/cuddle/pet/fuck" whatever heart- throb. It is essentially one drawn-out tease, that does have the virtue that the two MCs do in fact make (sedate) love before the end--once.

A bigger disappointment was that the heroine's disability-partial paralysis and confinement to a wheelchair-plays only a very minor role in the developing relations between the MCs. In particular, the author's depiction of their love-making, refers only vaguely to the sensual impact of the paralysis. I got the distinct feeling that the author was deeply uncomfortable with the whole disability business. She never even mentions any consequences of the heroine's paralysis--nothing about bathroom issues, mobility issues, medical problems, and the like. Either she is simply ignorant, or else embarrassed. If so, why bother featuring a disabled MC at all?

Accepting these weaknesses, the story is still a good one, featuring engaging, attractive characters, an interesting backstory and family dynamics, and intriguing settings, namely,
kitchens and food preparation. The happy ending seems a little more forced even than usual in romances, but is satisfying, anyway.

If you like warm and fuzzy stories that have relatively simple plots and characters with few complication, you will enjoy this story. Keep your expectations low and you'll have fun with it.

Happy reading!

Darcy and Patrick

It was a-ok read, not something I would want to repeat or even remember apart from the fact that the h, Darcy, is in a wheelchair. I didn't like that she was so hung on the fact that she would be a burden to Patrick.

The plot is okay but the writing isn't my favorite. I didn't personally find it that engaging and the person in a wheelchair was not a really strong woman.

Plot - 2/5
Chemistry - 2/5

I did not get the usual fluffy feeling. Darcy was a sad character and looked like her character would have strong emotions but she jumps to easily at any chance to kiss him and that is something i could not get. where was the struggle ?

Patrick, is he even human? he is too nice a guy and that is what made him unreal.

Very sweet story. I little more risque` than the usual "in her shoes" books. Darcy lost what she thought was everything after a debilitating injury because of a car accident. Now, she has remade herself into an amazing chef and is temporarily working for Mr. Judson. She does not like to be in the spotlight EVER! She is left at odds when Mr. Judson takes her on as a personal project to get her "out into public" so she can better herself.
