For the most part, I enjoyed A Divided Heart by Kathleen Morgan. I liked the themes, the characters, the writing style and the plot. I think the book could have been longer and stronger by adding more character development though. The two main characters seemed a very unlikely match because of their differences in education and self-motivation.

I could very well see what Sarah Caldwell, a very green eighteen year old who’s main focus in life has been following her good-for-nothing father and brothers around the Rocky Mountains while they were busy thieving and cattle-hustling, would have seen in Cord Wainwright. However, I had a very hard time believing that Cord, a self-made and very successful lawyer with a practice in New York City, would really be that attracted to Sarah beyond her physical appearance. He seemed like such an interestingly complex character, but by the end of the book, I felt I really hardly knew him. All I really knew was that he’d left the ranch eleven years before because he hated his father, had put himself through college and law school by being a champion boxer, and had come back home with the two thousand dollars his father needed to save the ranch.

It also would have been nice if Cord had opened up to Sarah about the eleven years he had been “running away” from his family... then she, in turn, might have also opened up to him about how frustrated she was with the life her father had created for her family. They never did share much from their hearts except to say, “I love you,” and “I want you...” even after they were married.

The ‘Christian’ elements in this book seemed rather thrown in. From what I gathered, neither one of the main characters was a Christian at the beginning of the book– and only through conversation with Cord’s older, invalid brother Nick, did anyone ever talk about it. Never once, that I can remember, did Cord and Sarah ever talk about it with each other.

Near the end I found myself skimming through the pages to get to the last page. They story ended well, it just seemed to take a long time to get there. I never really knew what caused the feud between the Wainwrights and the Caldwells in the first place –besides the fact that it involved a gamble of some sort... and that it was one of the major plot-points. I had a very hard time believing that Sarah’s father had actually ever owned Castle Mountain Ranch in the first place. I wanted to be happy for the newly-married couple on the last page, but truthfully, I did not feel that there was a deep emotional connection between them... only a very-focused-upon mutual physical attraction for each other.

Perhaps it wasn't the most put together book I've ever read... but did like it and I will continue to read Kathleen Morgan's books.

DNF. It sucks that I can't finish my first book of the year but I just can't stand the drama. It's ridiculous, and Sarah (the main protagonist) really gets on my nerves. She doesn't think. Very irritating.

There's nothing quite like a feud and a decades old vendetta between two families to make for a good read. When you throw in a few handsome men on one side of the fence, a beautiful woman on the other and God in between you get the amazing read that is A Heart Divided. The few years that Kathleen Morgan fans had to wait for this, her latest novel were well worth it.

Right from the beginning there's danger and not just the kind that puts one's life in danger but one's heart as well. A few pages in there's a toe curling kiss that leads to much more than either Sarah Caldwell or Cord Wainwright would ever imagine. Who knew teaching a "lesson" could lead to so much heartache, discovery, and most importantly the realization of the truth that is love? However each of the characters including Danny and Nick, Cord's older brother add so much depth to this book that it's not just a romance. Nick is quite possibly my favorite character. He struggles with his own physical limitations and the fact that he may never find love but at the same time provides so much love and understanding for Sarah. All I can say is, dear Ms. Morgan please, please, please give Nick his own story!!!!

A Heart Divided is one of the strongest historical fiction romances I've read in a very long time. If you're a fan of the Christian romance genre and like your stories with an "edgier" flavor you will probably want to pick this up. I don't suggest borrowing this from the library (no hard feelings libraries, I love you!) because you will want to add this story to your keeper collection! I also don't suggest starting it before bedtime because you'll want to stay up all night reading the entire book! Yeah it's that good.

More like 4.5 stars.

I really enjoyed A Heart Divided. The hero in the novel was like many men who have a lot of anger bottled inside them. The hero was justified in what he was upset over, but at the same time he learned like we all do that holding resentment only hurts the people you love, and hurts you even more. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and witnessing the softening of Cord's heart over time. I loved the ruse that Nick and Sarah put together that failed miserably. I also appreciated the realism in the romance. I don't typically enjoy stories where the hero and heroine are angry with each other so much, but in this case I did see the stubborn hearts of each of them as key to the plot as opposed to a way to fill in space and create artificial tension.

The romantic elements of the story were very delectable. I have to admit that I love a story that gets my heart pounding, and this story definitely did that for me. The kisses were worth waiting for and the anticipation kept building. I loved that. I also appreciated the spiritual thread. It was intricately woven into the plot in a way that made sense to me. It's funny how I've read so many books lately with hard-hearted heroes in them when it comes to faith in God. This theme was more well done in this novel than in most cases. A Heart Divided is the perfect title for this book, but ultimately it's the hearts uniting that brought me the most inspiration. I enjoyed this novel and will definitely read more stories penned by Kathleen Morgan.

Rather like the Hatfields and Mccoys, the Caldwells and the Wainwrights have been feuding since before either Sarah Caldwell or Cord Wainwright were born. Nevertheless, they are on opposite sides. After Sarah is manipulated by her father to distract Cord so that they can rob her--she doing it because her younger brother is ill--she is later spotted by Cord and put under citizen's arrest until the Sheriff returns to town. This is a romance, so many things are a given between the two of them. But naturally the feud continues to the point of boiling over and there is a great deal of conflict both inside and outside of Sarah as well as Cord.

The writing is very solid, but it's definitely first and foremost a romance, so it's not my favourite style of writing. Morgan adds some apparent expressions from the time--not so much that it reads like it was written before this century, but once in a while in people's thoughts she throws in a blatant anachronism, such as "verbal abuse" and there is no way that phrase would have entered someone's thoughts back then.

If you like historical Christian romances with handsome cowboys, then this is likely to be your cup of tea.

It’s been quite some time since I have read a book by Kathleen Morgan so I didn’t really know what to expect with this one. I do enjoy stories from the old West and this one with a feud between two families over a ranch played out very well. Having to choose between her family and someone from from a family that was hated was a struggle for Sarah. It was also very difficult for Cord to trust her. This is a book about forgiveness of others not for their sake but for your own. I think this is a very good read that you will enjoy as I did.

First I have to admit this is not the first Kathleen Morgan Christian Historical Fiction to enter my TBR pile, but it is the first one that I snatched up and read and I am glad that I do so! The title and premese remind me of home where it seems everyone is either for the University of Georgia or Georgia Tech and there is not much of a middle ground. However, there are these really neat license plate tags that say a home divided or something similar for families that are split down the middle. (When I went to search for a picture, I discovered there are also flags and all sorts of other things too with the same image.) Having a brother that graduated from UGA who then went on for some classes at GT it was interesting. Yet in the long run, my dad was from GT and my Enginerd went to GT, so my loyalties were drawn. Now back to the book...

I am delighted to have enjoyed the imaginative story from author Kathleen Morgan and she is one that I'm adding to my keeper shelf and now I'm eager to jump into her Scottish historicals that already sit upon my shelves waiting eagerly to be read. From the first page I was drawn in and entertained through out. The characters grasped me and I couldn't wait to see how the events unfolded. I do have to admit that toward the end-the last 70 or so pages-I felt that more than once the story jumped in the timeline and there could have been a better transition as I felt a scene was missing or two, but overall the story was there and gave me a great deal of pleasure in reading time.

I do recommend this novel. This is book one in the Heart of the Rockies series and I look forward to the rest to come.

The feud between the Wainwrights and the Caldwells has been going on for many years. Now, Sarah and her brothers are caught up helping their father with another scheme to get back at the Wainwrights. This time Sarah is ordered to distract Cord Wainwright, while her brothers and father made off with the Wainwright money.

Let’s say that Cord is not pleased. The next day, when Cord spots Sarah in town, he decides to take her to the sheriffs and have her arrested. Unfortunately, the sheriff is out of town for three days. Cord does not plan to let Sarah get away. He kidnaps her and brings her back to his place until the sheriff returns. Sarah grows close to not only one Wainwright brother but also another…Cord’s older brother, Nick. This feud just got more interesting.

A Heart Divided is the first book in the Heart of the Rockies series. Sarah had me smiling. She was feisty. Of course with three brothers and putting up with Cord, Sarah needed to be strong and defend herself. I thought it was funny that Cord was trying to be all tough and macho and did not want to admit his feelings at first, when it came to Sarah. He acted like a three year old and at one point during a conversation with his brother, Nick, he thought that Sarah loved Nick. When Sarah and Cord finally got together, there were sparks. The location was great. The beautiful Rocky Mountains. Who could ask for more? Of course, I might be a little biased as I also like the author live in Colorado and get to see these mountains. I could picture myself there with Sarah on the Wainwright ranch. I am sure book two will be just as good. I hope that Nick is the feature in the next book. I would like to see him find love.

“A Heart Divided” by Kathleen Morgan was a great book. Sarah Caldwell’s family was always either on the edge of the law or completely on the other side of the law. Ever since the Wainright’s gained control of the Caldwell Ranch in a card game many years ago, Jacob Caldwell has waged a war of vengeance against the Wainrights.

The last act of vengeance perpetrated on the Wainwrights was a home burglary in which Sarah reluctantly aided her father and brothers by keeping Cord Wainwright busy. After the robbery, the Caldwells beat Cord badly. A few weeks later, Sarah was in town disguised as a young boy, when Cord recognized her and captured her. He took her to the Wainwright ranch until he was able to turn her over to the law. In that time spent at the ranch, Sarah and Cord formed an uneasy truce which developed into something more. Together they worked at getting the families together and stopping the feud. However, finding out just who was behind the rustling and other dastardly deeds would come as a big surprise to all involved.

I very much enjoyed this book and was reluctant to put it down.

Really enjoyed reading this book, and I would have given it 5 stars but like in all of Kathleen Morgan's books there are certain things I don't like (mostly things my feminist side won't accept.) But for the most part this was a really good book, the plot and characters were great to read about; you kind of get lost in the family feud that is going on, but at the same time it isn't overwhelming so you can enjoy the romantic and Christian side to the book. I especially loved the relationship between Cord and Nick, and thus they were my favorite characters. If you have read other books by Morgan then I am sure you will like this one as well. Arguably this is the best I have read from her.

In spite of the fact that Sarah and Cord come from warring families, they find love but, more importantly, find God in the midst of their struggles. The author uses Scripture appropriately while weaving this engrossing tale. I was captivated by the author's storytelling and could not wait to finish the book.

My only suggestion (or criticism) is that I had hoped there would have been more closure on the outcome of Allis's deviousness and treachery - all due to her jealousy. I was left hanging in this regard.

Overall I really look forward to reading more books by this author. I have not read an author who did such a good job writing Christian fiction since Janette Oke and Lori Wick.

Two feuding families. A pair who is fighting their attraction to each other. Will Sarah & Cord be able to survive the fall out that is going to happen? Or will forgiveness be the answer?

I've spent the last week reading this at lunch at work. I've loved it. The characters are witty and funny and very believable. I've read several of Kathleen Morgan's books before and like always wasn't let down. Looking forward to book 2

I really enjoyed this book. It's an excellent example of Christian Historical Fiction. The characters are flawed, but they manage to communicate, and overcome a long-standing family feud to come to a place of forgiveness. The writing was simple, making this a quick read that nicely passed a few hours. And the romance didn't move to quickly, but was believably done.

Kathleen Morgan gave a great basis for a storyline. I did like the earlier tension btw Sarah's character and Cord before they were together because i felt it did show its realism. I did however find it unrealistic at how open and "loving" they became after their first kiss because they spent so much time figuring out their feelings. I thought the romance should have had a steady flow..not more dragged out in the beginning then all at once they are saying "my love" etc when moments before that would not cross their lips.

Toward the middle and end i did find parts where the character Cord and Sarah dragged in their emotions a bit, Cord with his anger and Sarah with her unwavering and at times blind devotion to defend her fathers position. Though many times in the novel sarah knew his actions were wrong, i found her constantly defending and agonizing over his state. How he treats her throughout the entire novel didnt give me an insight on how and why she seems to miss the "father" that once was. He goes from using her in the robbery, to neglecting her at Cords, to mocking her and physically lashing out at her in the jail cell, to almost on the verge of shooting her in his vengeful madness..and yet Sarah still seems to consistently present a tone that cries "Papa, papa, how i love you". So with all that, i think if Kathleen was trying to show 2 sides of the father..she definately missed on character development with Jacob. I wouldve liked to see in him both a protagonist storyline vs the conflicting antagonist...a step inside his world more to understand his anger, and heartache, pain and vengence that Sarah herself says he's so blinded by, and see why she misses her "loving" father because we as readers never get a chance to witness that side.

In all it was a good and quick read. I would check out Kathleens other books if another storyline was compelling enough.

A Heart Divided is an excellent story of love and forgiveness. Right from the start, it is romantic and dramatic. The relationship between Cord and Sarah is fiery and worth the work. All of the characters are interesting and contribute in their own ways. There are a lot of interesting time jumps within the story. Moments that could have added to the story were skipped over in favor of keeping the plot moving. It was not a bad thing, just an observation. Other books would have included the scenes of rescuing the stolen cattle or their wedding day, but this story just told you about those moments spending more time on other more plot driven scenes. I liked how the book didn't end with their marriage but rather that was an integral part of the plot. A lot of these books stop once the relationship is established regardless of the other parts of the plot. I really liked how this book finished up all of the drama within the story before ending. I also appreciated how she went into a little more detail about the beauty of being together after marriage rather than glazing over the intimacy while still keeping it PG. The ending was complete and very sweet.

This was a well written and sweet historical Christian romance novel with interesting characters. I really enjoyed seeing the growth in Sarah and Cord as they learned to handle their differences and their passion together although it took so long for them to actually manage to communicate well with each other that I was beginning to wonder if they ever would. Seeing how Sarah finally learned to put herself and her younger brother's needs above the honor she owed her father was truly satisfying while seeing what it ultimately took to end the feuding between their families was sad, and all together, the story this novel told was so good, and I look forward to reading more of the series eventually.

This was a much more complex story than I had imagined from the description. I really appreciated that the characters had some real depth to them. The good guys weren't just good not the bad guys just bad. I also liked that the resolution took some time in coming together. The story didn't just end with a sudden change of heart with everything suddenly coming up roses. This is also the first book in a series, yet the story came to a full conclusion, rather than leaving some obvious plotlines hanging to be wrapped up in later volumes.

I had read a book by Kathleen Morgan taking place in Scotland and really liked it so I decided to try this series. It was such a different experience I wondered if it’s the same author. The plot and moral were good, but the storytelling was slow and hokey. I considered giving up and moving on several times, but I liked the two main characters and wanted to see their story resolved. If you like slow clean cowboy stories, this book would fit the bill. If you want to be drawn in and captivated by a story this is not the one.

The Caidwells and Wainwrights have been feuding for decades. Still, Sarah Caldwell has misgivings when her father pressures her into distracting a ranch hand while he and her brothers rob the Wainwrights place. When it becomes clear that hand is actually Cord Wainwright, heir of the Wainwright holdings, Sarah realizes things have gone too far.
As the feud boils over Cord and Sarah make a inconvenient discovery, they might be falling in love.
Can they betray their families to see where this attraction leads or will their families betray them?

Love the story line but dislike the religious content. Two families that have been feuding for decades end up reconciling in an unconventional way. It's not easy having to choose between your family or the love of your enemy. This is the choice she needs to make for the sake of an ill brother and the love of the man she is to marry.

This was a weird book. I couldn’t put it down for the first. 9 chapters or so. But then they get together…

and I was trying to figure out what the second half of the book was going to be about (so I read some reviews).. decided I don’t want to keep reading lol. It ended sweetly enough on chapter 10

This was an ok read, basically a western version of the classic Romeo and Juliet story. It was well written, and the characters were interesting which filled in for the somewhat trite plot. I will likely be looking to try more from this author.
