This just never quite going for me. It seemed too thrown together, and a coherent plot never quite came to fruition. There were talking zombies, a living zombie, a big ass elephant (coolest part of the story), and there was plenty of shooting, but none of it ever fit together well. Not at all what I would expect of a Romero work. I'm still processing it all with a "what the hell did I just read?" vibe.

This is an intriguing hodge-podge of stuff -- a zombie that still retains his mind, morality, and memories and ALSO happens to ride an elephant named Mr. Tembo; the zombie's former girlfriend-turned-sharpshooter; a shadowy political group trying to turn a profit out of the zompocalypse; zombie armies and mad scientists -- and there are deffo some great moments. ("Jesus, you ARE dead!" "That doesn't make me a bad person, does it?")

Just wish it had all solidified in a more satisfying way. Perhaps there are future issues planned that'll wrap it up in a tighter bow.

Sorting through some old boxes of comics, I came across this entire run from George A. Romero's Toe Tags, which I remembered enjoying a bit when I was younger. Being a huge fan of Romero's zombie world, I dove back into these. Story is okay, there are some interesting ideas, and the illustrations and zombies are terrific (really the highlight of the book), but it's not the ultimate zombie work from the master of the genre. Here's hoping his new book that just posthumously came out will be as good as I'm hoping.

Hmmm. This is the second Romero thing I wanted to like but thought was shite in less than a year. This and The Living Dead were just so bad that it's hard to believe he made such great movies.Should he have just stuck to the excellent movies, or am I just not seeing the genius in these? I'm pretty sure I'm right in thinking this blows, but... This was just a complete mess that seems to be missing huge chunks here and there. What a waste

A super bland and tough to follow zombie story with really nice and detailed art. Characters get lost in the shuffle and no one receuves enough development to get attached to.

Side note, i actually read this series in it's original single issue form, and it's actually comical how many ads were in each issue. Id go so far as to say that at least 50% of each issue was advertisements.

There is something in the blood that determines if a person is good or bad? Even after becoming a zombie? Who are more evil: the zombies or the remaining government officials? These are some interesting concepts that are not fully examined that in the end turns this book into just an average and somewhat confusing zombie story with decent art work.

Kind of corny and stereotypical. The dialogue and pacing feels off but the themes and ideas are good. We gotta stop eating and killing eachother and start reforming the powers that be wanting to control us. Just wish it was longer and had more time to establish relationships. Fun quick read if you're a Romero fan.

The Wrightson paintings are marvelous.

This book forced me to ask the question of whether or not a zombie can get an erection. Which isn't the most vile thing I've ever considered, just academically, but when a reader's mind is going on meanders like that, they might not be super engaged with the story.

Please keep in mind, not ALL readers will ponder this, probably not even most. But it has happened a minimum of once.

Better but much sillier than "Empire of the Dead".

A lot is in this book, but I can't help but wonder if it would have worked better as a script or novel. There are some characters that I wished were more developed and some things that seemed a little too much like Deus Ex Machina in full effect. These critiques are not to say that the book is not worth a read, but rather they are commentary showing two important concepts - the historical proof that Romero has told excellent tales and the fact that the concept here is interesting and the characters laden with such potential that I wanted something a little more from the work.

Perhaps it just seemed too condensed in some ways. Still, it is fun and interesting and if the only major complaint is that it made me wanting more, it is not the worst critique a graphic novel can receive. Romero, horror, and zombie fans should pick this up for at least a read and to admire the artwork.
