After childhood plans to become the captain of a starship didn’t pan out, Suzanne Brockmann took her fascination with military history, her respect for the men and women who serve, her reverence for diversity, and her love of storytelling, and explored brave new worlds as a bestselling romance author.

Over the past thirty years she has written sixty-three novels, including her award-winning Troubleshooters series about Navy SEAL heroes and the women—and sometimes men—who win their hearts. Her personal favorite is the one where her most popular character, gay FBI agent Jules Cassidy, wins his happily-ever-after and marries the man of his dreams. Called All Through the Night, this mainstream romance novel with a hero and a hero hit the New York Times hardcover fiction bestseller list. In 2007, Suz donated all of her earnings from this book, in perpetuity, to MassEquality, to help win and preserve equal marriage rights in Massachusetts.

In addition to writing books, Suz writes and produces indie movies and TV including the award-winning romantic comedy The Perfect Wedding. Her recent feature, Out of Body, is streaming on Amazon Prime.

In 2018, Suz was given the Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award from the Romance Writers of America. Her latest projects are Blame It on Rio (Tall, Dark & Dangerous # 14), available in print and e-book from Suzanne Brockmann Books, and Marriage of Inconvenience, a six-episode LBGTQ rom-com TV series, streaming on Dekkoo in April 2023.

Opening line “Hey, Hey, Hey There, Mission Man! How ya doin’, Baby? Rise and shine!

Oh this was just so good, another fantastic addition (#8 if you‘re counting) to theTall Dark & Dangerous series. Each book just seems to get better and better and I found myself constantly smiling through this one as Suzanne Brockmann tackles amnesia, giving Mitchell Shaw’s story a real Bourne Identity flavour with a romantic edge.

There were a lot of things to like about Identity:Unknown, apart from the obvious hunky Navy Seal hero that is. The story itself is really good and there are all these wonderful side moments too; including some hilarious banter between the SEAL team members sent to find Mitch. We also get several welcome updates and cameos from past characters and spend time on a dude ranch, which was a fun departure. As usual Brockman creates absolutely sigh-worthy romantic dialogue and sizzling love scenes but here also manages to maintain an element of suspense. As we pick up the pieces of Mitch’s memory and learn everything right along with him; what he’s doing in New Mexico, who shot him and why and ultimately who he is. Its all cleverly done.

I think one of my favourite moments though (other then the Star Wars-Mitch has gone to the Dark side line) would have to be the discovery of a priests collar among Mitch’s belongings. He and Becca have just spent several nights of passion together and now Becca feels terrible because she seduced him, subsequently breaking his vows. Throughout Mitch keeps proclaiming; I just know I’m not a priest, hilarious and uncomfortable to say the least. Speaking of Becca she was great heroine; funny, tough and goes after what she wants which makes her the perfect match for our absent minded hero.

Mitchell Shaw joins us from a church homeless shelter, he’s dirty, bloody, in pain and apparently hung-over but worst of all when he looks in the mirror “Mish” has absolutely no idea who the man looking back at him is. The items in his possession are of little help; an address, a gun and five thousand dollars in cash. The address leads him to the lazy 8 Ranch where manager Becca Keyes just assumes he’s her hired hand Casey Parker and Mish of course doesn’t know any better, maybe he is? Sparks fly immediately between our pair even though its obvious Mish is useless on a horse, he is however awesome at rescuing small children caught in flash floods and knows a lot about guns.

Mish tries to keep his distance from Becca because after the dreams he’s been having he’s pretty sure he’s a very, very bad man however Becca is determined to seduce him. Eventually our couple end up getting all down and dirty at the local motel while trying to figure out how to get into locker 101 at the bus station without tipping off the 3 men Mitch has spotted staking it out. He’s pretty sure they’re the bad guys; they are of course Lucky, Bobby and Wes who’ve been following his trail of marked cash and need to bring him in before the real Casey Parker gets him, unless he’s gone to the Dark side that is… Cheers people.

I've always been a sucker for an amnesia story. This is one of the better ones. I'm currently rereading these stories since I bought ebook versions. I love how Mitch (love the name) thinks he's a bad guy but is willing to turn himself in to save Becca (hate the name). Sacrifice for love is another favorite. Good details on the horse element. (Hey I had a horse named Silver too and I also did not name him that.) Getting the horse stuff wrong will turn me virulently against a book. The series starts here and in the last book showing elements that eventually make her Troubleshooters series so good, i.e., there are scenes from the POVs of others of Team 10 who will eventually get their own books. I love getting to know characters over the course of several books so that I am more excited and vested in their stories when they eventually come around. I also like it when the SEAL (as here) has to swim as part of the mystery/suspense element. Hey they're Navy SEALs, let's see them do their thing.

The problem with reading older books - this one is 1999 - is that some pop culture references not only date a book but make it hard to enjoy because it throws you off the story.

For example: in this story the heroine has only recently gotten "the internet" on her laptop but doesn't have it at home or work. The hero is a "wiz" at all this "internet stuff". Cell phones are not in widespread usage. The heroine was going to work on a "website kind of thing" for her boss in her spare time.

The story itself was a disappointment. I didn't see any real connection between the two characters. Previous hero's Lucky, Wes and Bobby were written as if they were the 3 Stooges instead of the intelligent, military men we know them to be.

There's no real connection between this book and others in her TDD series, so I'd say skip it unless you just really want to read it.

3.5 stars. Brockmann's category romances rarely have the same oomph for me as her longer ones, and even with an amnesiac hero this one seemed a bit thin. He was very nummy though, in a quiet, anguished way. Nice passionate love scenes, too.

A wonderful book by an extremely talented author!

Navy SEAL Mitchell Shaw awakes one morning in a homeless shelter with a raging headache. Everyone around him assumes he's just another homeless addict, but he's not suffering from a temporary alcohol-induced blackout. He can't remember anything about himself. There are only three clues available to him to discover his lost identity: a roll of $100 bills and a small deadly gun hidden in his boot, and an address that leads him to a dude ranch managed by a lovely young woman named Becca Keyes.

As an extremely jaded romance reader who has been reading romance novels since the inception of the genre the early 70s, in my opinion, this book totally fulfills the highest purpose of romance, to make the reader feel, and feel intensely. The emotional and passionate impact of this story is tremendous! I believe there are multiple reasons for this achievement.

First, characterization. Since romance, more than any other form of fiction, is utterly character driven, the most essential requirement for excellence is wonderful characters. Ms. Brockmann has totally succeeded at this goal in Identity: Unknown. These characters are not just sympathetic, they leap from the page.

Second, conflict and motivation. This book is brimming with believably motivated and very gripping external, internal, and most important of all, relationship conflict between the lovers. It is essential in a romance that the lovers be together constantly, be absolutely "made for each other," and yet something compelling and believable keep them apart, elements which are there in spades in this book.

An additional vital component of excellent fiction, including romance, is great plotting. It is very evident in this book in Ms. Brockmann's fascinating use of a continuing Navy SEAL theme. When Mitch, the hero, receives an injury while on undercover assignment that leads to temporary amnesia, this fascinating plotting device works beautifully with a well-motivated internal conflict centering around the honor and integrity of the hero. This in turn seamlessly leads to the exciting external and internal complications which race the story along and keep the reader rapidly turning pages.

Along with all of the above vital components of good popular fiction, in a romance, there is the additional requirement of a love relationship of such an intensity that the reader is moved to tears, shivers and sighs. In this, Ms. Brockmann exceeds every expectation. The tenderness, poignancy, trust, compassion, caring--and blazing sensuality--between Mitch and Becca are astounding.

Mitch is one of my all-time favorite heroes, and, which is all-important for me as a reader, Becca is worthy of him in her ability to love, her bravery, initiative, independence, and ethics.

It's not essential to read the (as of 2022) 13 books in Brockmann's Tall, Dark and Dangerous series in order, but it greatly adds to one's enjoyment to do so. Each book sets up the book that immediately follows it, introducing the SEAL who will be the hero of the next book, along with pertinent backstory, for the first 11 books, which were originally published under Silhouette Intimate Moments, the Harlequin romantic-suspense imprint. The last two books in this series, written many years after #11, are slightly different in that regard. In particular, the hero of #13 King’s Ransom is an important subcharacter in #3 Frisco’s Kid. Unfortunately, the last two self-published add-ons to this series are not remotely as good as the ones written years ago for Harlequin. This is the order in which this series was originally released:

1) Prince Joe, June 1996
2) Forever Blue, October 1996
3) Frisco's Kid, January 1997
4) Everyday, Average Jones, August 1998
5) Harvard's Education, October 1998
6) It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, December 1998 (Note: the 2010 audiobook is titled Hawken's Heart)
7) The Admiral's Bride, November 1999
8) Identity: Unknown, January 2000
9) Get Lucky, March 2000
10) Taylor's Temptation, July 2001
11) Night Watch, September 2003
12) SEAL Camp, May, 2018
13) King’s Ransom, December, 2020

I rate this book as follows:
Heroine: 5 stars
Hero: 5 stars
Romance Plot: 5 stars
Suspense Plot: 5 stars
Writing: 5 stars
Overall: 5 stars

Author: Suzanne Brockmann
First published: 2011
Length: 2970 kindle locations
Setting: Contemporary.
Sex: Infrequent. Varies from explicit to door half-closed.
Hero: SEAL with amnesia.
Heroine: Manages a ranch.
Triggers: Violence. Mitch has memories of a very violent past.

A very slow suspense-less romantic-suspense. It reads as Brockmann tried to do a treatise on how a boy brought up in a secure, religious family becomes a SEAL sent into the worst environments, taking lives. Unfortunately, Brockmann lost me. I was bored. It was slow and grinding and nothing happened.

2 stars. It was okay.

There really is nothing that stands out about this story and nothing that makes it, well, special. That said, it was a nice predictable little story that mostly held my attention.

It's really amazing how far Suzanne Brockmann has come since this series. Her Troubleshooters series is not even comparable to this earlier one--not that I don't like this series, but they're the type of books you can easily forget. HOWEVER:

First off, I'd like to give Brockmann kudos for writing a story in which the main hero has amnesia, because she did it in the most realstic, non-annoying way possible. The heroine does not know he doesn't know who he is, and there's no evil plot brewed by the heroine to convince the hero he's someone he's not. So there's that.

Now, I like Becca. I do. But she's just not that interesting. She reminds me of every single other heroine in this series. They're all sooo similar. That problem does not exist with her newer series. The guys, at least, have personalities that are a bit more unique. At first I was excited because Mitch was described as slender, and how often is a romance hero described as slender!?!? But then she had to go and ruin that and say it was only an illusion and that he's actually beefy. Damn. At least he wasn't too tall! Also, they kept referring to him as quiet, pretty much every character, but...he certianly didn't act quiet!

That's just all me being picky. It's a sweet, enjoyable story and the hero/heroine actually like each other throughout most of the story, which was refreshing.

The whole subplot with the other SEALS was pointless, because it had no resolution and seemed to be thrown in there just so we'd know what was going on in their heads and not for any real reason. Again, I'm being picky. Also, the bad guy was pretty pathetic and was defeated with almost no trouble. Just saying.

Other than that, it's fine. I just won't remember it in another few months or so. Not bad, though.

Identity: UnknownI simply loved this story. It was action from the first page. Good romance, though not as hot as other books in this series. The plot was over the top awesome and I have added it to my favorites shelf, which says a lot.

On a mission to recover stolen Plutonium for The Grey Group, Lt. Mitch Shaw, U.S. Navy SEAL, wakes up in a homeless shelter and has no idea how the got there. When he looks in a mirror a stranger is staring back at him. He has no idea who he is. In his boot he finds a .22 pistol, five thousand dollars and a fax from Rebecca Keyes, manager of the Lazy 8 ranch. That is the only clue he has and a starting point for "Misch", as the attendant has nicknamed him. Mitch follows his clues in the hope that he can figure out who he is. At the Lazy 8 Becca hires him as a ranch hand. Together they avert a tragedy and discover a powerful attraction. Mitch fights it, because although he doesn't know who he is, he feels the need to keep his condition to himself and it is not fare to Becca to get involved with someone who doesn't know who or what he is. But, their growing attraction can't be postponed or reasoned away. Becca stays with Mitch as he follows his clues and they discover not only his true identity, but true love.

This was the first TDD book I read, probably somewhere in 2008. It had not made a big impression at all, rather a poor one.
Reading it again now with the whole series together, I clearly understood why. Most of the instalments are loosely connected to the other, but this one has a plot which is quite strongly linked with the previous. Moreover the hero suffered from amnesia from page 1 until page 5 before the end or so, he doubted himself, thought to be a bad guy and felt completely alone and lost in limbo. The other team members which we got to know in the other books were not strongly described here, one team member doubted the hero integrity. It all did not make him easy to understand or appreciate and in my opinion could only work when reading this book with the others and not independently. The heroine did not seem real to me and I honestly did not really believe in the appearance of deep and strong feelings between them, based on the large blanks and lies that were told at the time to hide the amnesia.
So my advice would be: only to be read by TDD fans, after reading the rest of the series (or in its right place, but certainly not among the first books).

Plot good. SEAL stuff good. I didn’t like the romance as much in this book- skipped thru that part.
The first 43 pages were wonderful but then it went sideways for me.
Reread: Feb 2023. Very good start .. enjoy SB’s writing.
Insta-love .. but well-drawn characters make up a bit for that.
Her early books are my favorite.
Setting: New Mexico.
“Mish” Mitchell Shaw seems like a John Clark (Tom Clancy) type. He has amnesia from a bullet graze while on a mission.
Becca is dude ranch manager and very assertive.
I like all the horse info .. and the hunt Wes, Lucky and Bobby are on to find MS.
c1999. 3.5 stars Keeping as good intro to Wes’s book.

This definitely wasn't one of my favorites but it was good. Some parts were frustrating, like how as the reader we see a larger picture of the full story and the characters only see their perspectives...so I found myself wanting to grab characters by their hair, point and be like "look right there!" But overall I enjoyed it. And of course its a romance so there always the "and they lived happily ever after..." So not the best in the series but all her books are good...

Book eight on my journey through the TDD series. And this one... man, so much NOT good to be said.

First, it's an amnesia book. But he knows whatever Suz wants him to know, like his pant size, the fact that he's not married... it was sporadic and kind of cheezy.

Second, Becca is RUNNING a full-service ranch that supposedly is so high-profile and expensive, they're black-tie invitees to soirees, and hosting the opera. BUT...! She can just 'call in' without notice for days and run around cavorting with Mish. Riiiiiight. No problem.

Third, the SEALs in this book are more three stooges than capable men. They don't notice Mitch walking down the street in front of them, they *KNOW* he's a master of disguise, but barely react when a 'bag lady' shows up and messes with the lockers they have been surveilling... Riiiiight. No, they would've been ON Mitch, hello.

Fourth, they only spend something like two weeks together, and it's Insta-luvvv. In spite of the fact that he doesn't even know his name, suspects he's an ex-con murderer with a history of brutal violence. But it's okay, because LUVVVV. ?????

Fifth, this is a cowboy book. In a Navy SEAL series. Because reasons? Suz wanted to write a western, pard'ner? I don't know, but it seems like they wouldn't send the military in undercover on American soil to take action against our own citizens. I think there might actually be LAWS against that...

More, Mitch has always been painted as the not-really-open, not-really-there seal that nobody knows. But along with losing his memory, he somehow also loses his personality and opens wide up to Becca, in less than two weeks time? That's not Mitch.

I just... didn't much care for the fact that SO much didn't make sense, was up in the air, and was hokey about the story.

I decided I would read this series in order. I hadn’t read all but most of them years ago and had actually started with the last book which I think was a Sihloutte or Harleqin book. I then picked up the ones that were available in paperback at the time. If you look at this series for the era it was written and for a cheesy pb romance less than 200 pages, you can see this series was a cut above. I am rating these on that criteria

Later, I bought the set when you could buy multiple books in ebook compilations. It is now that I have the whole set I decided to read. I wanted to read them in order. With all that said....

This one is a DNF. I simply can’t plow through because it’s too boring. The SEAL has amnesia so he is working on a ranch. Maybe it gets better but I hung on through about a 1/3 of it. Action should commence by now. I don’t understand why Brockmann didn’t start with whatever happened to Mitchell Shaw to having wake with amnesia. Just start him in the action that caused it, then have him wake not knowing who he is...that builds action from the beginning and tension that he is in danger...otherwise it’s a cowboy romance and well no I couldn’t wait.

OK, it’s not Troubleshooters, but could I get past that? Yes, yes for Mission Man I could.
If, like me, you have read the entire Troubleshooters catalog and were Sooo disappointed that Ms. Brockmann called a break on that series, then you find out that she’s returning to SEAL Team 10, and are wondering if it’s worth going back to meet the group from the beginning, I’ve got to say Yes.
True, as Silhouette titles, the beginning stories are a bit smaller and more formulaic than the Troubleshooters. (Smaller in terms of backstory and build up from book to book, I mean.) I don’t know how the new one is going to stack up.
If smaller stories are more fun for Suz to write right now, well, we definitely want her to keep writing! Give this series a try.

That was great! I've started a bunch of books recently that were like "he's a total self-absorbed jerk but incredibly hot, and she totally can't resist him". Ugh. Self-absorbed jerks are jerks. I'm not interested. This is a story (following up on others from the series) with a male lead who is not a self-absorbed jerk. The romance was good. The plot was good. I continue to love Suzanne Brockmann's books and will read whatever else of hers that I can find.

Hot seal with memory loss

A seal with a memory loss who thinks he's a bad bad man but can't remember. He wakes up with $5000 cash in his pocket and a fax addressed to Casey Parker for a job on a horse ranch. There he meets Becca, the love of his life. They start investigating his forgotten past, and life heats up. Great story would have liked more action.

One of Brockmann's Harlequinn's romances in her Tall, Dark & Dangerous Seal Team series. I thought I had read them all, but no, I just bought them. A light summer night's read and an entertaining addition to her line up. In this case, there is some suspense as our hero has lost his memory, but his dreams indicate he could be an assassin, a priest, or an ex-con.

Probably should have read the series in order. Enjoyed the book - but didn't love the book. The book had decent pacing - a mix of romance and intrigue. But the ending seemed rushed. Still -I enjoyed the characters.

It's an easy reading but I'm not sure why Becca falls in love so deep and quick. I mean sure, the stranger is nice and brace but he's also not honest, close-up, and push her out almost all the time. Maybe sometimes, going backwards is the best way to move forward.

On the edge of your seat

and you won’t move in this exciting and intense journey into the lives of Navy SEALS. From amnesia, missing plutonium and a ranch in New Mexico this is a page turner. Suzanne Brockman has delivered another great story—as always!
