Enoch was the son of Jared (Genesis 5:19–21), the father of Methuselah, and the great-grandfather of Noah. The Bible says that Enoch lived 365 years before he was taken by God. The text reads that Enoch "walked with God: and he was no more; for God took him" (Gen 5:21–24). This Enoch is not to be confused with Cain's son Enoch (Genesis 4:17). The Christian New Testament has three references to Enoch from the lineage of Seth (Luke 3:37, Hebrews 11:5, Jude 1:14–15).
Three extensive apocryphal works are attributed to Enoch:
1st Book of Enoch, or simply the Book of Enoch, an apocryphal book in the Ethiopic Bible that is usually dated between the third century BC and the first century AD.
2nd Book of Enoch, an apocryphal book in the Old Slavonic Bible usually dated to the first century AD.
3rd Book of Enoch, a Rabbinic text in Hebrew usually dated to the fifth century AD.
These recount how Enoch was taken up to Heaven and was appointed guardian of all the celestial treasures, chief of the archangels, and the immediate attendant on God's throne. He was subsequently taught all secrets and mysteries and, with all the angels at his back, fulfils of his own accord whatever comes out of the mouth of God, executing His decrees. Much esoteric literature like the 3rd Book of Enoch identifies Enoch as the Metatron, the angel which communicates God's word. In consequence, Enoch was seen, by this literature, and the Rabbinic kabbala of Jewish mysticism, as having been the one which communicated God's revelation to Moses, in particular, the dictator of the Book of Jubilees.

Who was Enoch? Was he right?
Were there beings back then? Of enormous height?
Titans, as big as mountains, like the films Cloverfield
All fell before them, all did yield
As small as grasshoppers, shocked, in awe
At these gigantic creatures, before the fall
Teaching humans about metal and ore
Turning women into the Babylonian Whore
Devouring men, women, children and all that be
The trees, the animals, the creatures from the sea
Corrupting, mining, building megaliths, and war, and pain
Is it coming? This end time, Armageddon, Ragnarok, Jihad, all over again?
Creating mutants, abominations, weapons of mayhem, and immoral minds
Turning people against each other, hating, against all kinds
Creating chaos, distraction, shock and terror
Making it the norm, ready for the Dragon, or Lucifer, the Light Bearer. 👍🐯
What is happening to this beautiful Earth?
This wonderful Gaia, that gives birth
To life, the flower and the fauna, us
Our Earth is dying, nobody is making a fuss
Acceptance, apathy, acquiescence, whilst oligarchs make millions
And we get taxed, and have to pay, for fossil fuels, like stupid minions

What on this wonderful Earth will be next? I fear for the morrow
Do we lock up the oligarchs? Throw away the key? Or give them a pardon?
For like the titans in the past, they are destroying our beautiful garden. 🐯👍🐯

I've heard about the Book of Enoch through various media/social media platforms and it was intriguing to finally read it. The story outlines God's destruction of the world during the time of Noah. It was explained exactly why the world had become wicked past the point of no return. 1 Enoch is broken up into various smaller sections about fallen angels, parables, and visions.
According to the text, fallen angels came down and procreated with human women thus creating nephilim (giants) as mentioned in Genesis 6:1-4. These fallen angels also taught men knowledge that eventually led to wickedness and their turning away from God.
Only Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel remained loyal and subordinate to Almighty God thus becoming archangels. Also explained was the hierarchy and order of angels in heaven to include the cherubim, seraphim, and orphhanim (the wheeled heavenly beings mentioned in the chariot vision in the Book of Ezekiel). Also explained was the fallen angel Azazel who was bound and banished into the desert. He was specifically mentioned in the scapegoat portion of the Day of Atonement ritual from Leviticus 16:6-10.
The Book of the Luminaries was interesting because it explained how man developed the concept of time through celestial movement. According to the text man developed months, years, the progression of the seasons, waxing and waning of the moon, and movement of the stars throughout the year.
Overall this was an interesting read. I would only recommend this to someone who wants to learn more about the lore surrounding somewhat-obscure Biblical topics related to giants, fallen angels, and demonic forces on earth. Thanks!

The books of Enoch provide an intriguing view into the non-canonical mythos surrounding Christianity, including those of angelic nature, which is why I was drawn to them. The books feature many sidestories of angels, creation, demons, etc, and is also one of the written origins of the Watchers (angels sent to observe mankind and ultimately became smitten with them), Nephilim (offspring of human women and angels), and so on. Summaries of Enoch's texts are plentiful and easy to find, so I won't weigh down this review with a recap.
There's a lot of different versions of Enoch's texts, many different translations, interpretations, and so on - Nyland's edition, unfortunately, is not one of them. Entirely because of the editing.
Nyland is referred to a foremost scholar of apocryphal texts and angelic traditions, and her translation of Enoch's text itself reads well and flows with a nice, literary flair. She also goes beyond just translating the text and provides numerous footnotes, internal references, and so on. However, the editing and formatting of her text indicates that either she needed an editor or needed a better one.
Many of Nyland's notes are inserted directly into the text - not as footnotes, endnotes or appendices, but directly into the chapters - so that sometimes you have to flip past pages of her notes in order to continue reading Enoch's text. And in the early sections of the book, her notes are numerous, distracting, and ultimately frustrating. I guess I might be spoiled by study Bibles and such (where notes appear in small font at the bottom of the page), or my habits are in the minority, but I like to read the original text first, and then follow up on translator's notes later - not be forced to read another's interpretations before developing my own.
I also like more robust internal references, where if a translator's notes mention that, say, Gabriel appeared in Enoch book 1 and in Revelation, chapter and verse are provided. Instead, cursory references are listed, phrased like "Such-and-such angel is mentioned in passing in the book of Job", and that's it.
Sadly, these aren't my only grievances with Nyland's translation (her font type and size also vary wildly), but they are the most frustrating from my perspective. As a part-time academic, I'm accustomed to books with studious cross-references and a polished appearance that aids my research rather than distracts from it. I like to be able to use one scholar's notes as a launching point for my own research, to follow up on that person's research and confirm, deny, or supplement for myself - which I cannot do as well with poor references.
Overall: Nyland's translation reads clean and poetic, nice to read, though the notes and internal references leave much to be desired. Readers who are not of academic bent might be less distracted by the editing than me, but scholars would be wiser to look elsewhere.

This was a great read. The Books of Enoch is actually three separate books which were discovered in different areas and they each tell the same story. At the end of the book, Joseph Lumpkin pieces together a complete story using the Books of Enoch, the Holy Bible, the Book of Jasher, The War Scrolls, The book of Giants and other books to give the reader a complete account of what may have happened so long ago. I found the book and commentaries useful in my own search for knowledge, and The Books of Enoch filled in a lot of blanks which the accepted Holy Bible left blank. This is a must-read for anyone looking to expand their understanding of the beginning of human history or anyone who is fanatical about any and all types of mythology. The book will adequately satisfy both audiences.

Lumpkin has put such an incredible and diligent amount of work into this! This book contains so much info for those interested in the old testament events, but also some of the new testament. And obviously it is essential for those interested in angel lore. So many modern tv series and books take inspiration from this that reading it makes you appreciate modern literature and shows much more.
To be honest, I thought that the 1. Book of Enoch was a very repetitive and dry read as the style is similar to the bible. I suggest you skip it and just read the 2. and the 3. + Lumpkin's own book on the origins of evil etc since all content of Enoch 1 is also told in there. Except for the first book, I found the others to be pleasant and very informative reads.

I’m not sure how I can even rate this book without offending anybody. My intent is not to offend any believer of the biblical god nor is my intent just to bash for the sake of bashing. This review is by no means directed at Joseph B. Lumpkin, my review is directed at the word of god itself and those who recorded the word. I have never been a believer till I started to study the Anunnaki. I’m a believer of God now, just not this being masquerading as god, Jehovah or YHWH or Anu or Enlil or whatever the hell you want to call him. I will further state, that I didn’t just study one side of the story (the Bible, Books of Enoch, or any other biblical book) but I studied all sides and I’m still studying as learning and knowledge is a lifelong process. That doesn’t make my opinion to be the truth, none of us living in this modern day truly or really knows the truth behind the events that happened so many eons ago. By studying all sides of the ancient story, I let my human reason and intuition dictate what feels right by putting together history’s missing puzzle pieces.
With that said, I have thoroughly studied the ancient astronaut theory; specifically the story of the Anunnaki and even more specific the royal bloodlines of the Anunnaki to include the twelfth planet in our Solar System where they come from, Nibiru. I have studied human consciousness, the lost city of Atlantis, Sumerian, Egyptian, and Greek civilizations and mythology. I’m also a firm believer that history is written by the victors, in this case the victors were the Sons of Dark who came to power after fall of Atlantis (the lost city and all it’s amazing knowledge was created and taught by our true God, Lord Enki) and who have been in power ever since. In my opinion, it was the Sons of Dark that gave the word that created The Books of Enoch and of course the Bible. I will make this review as short as possible; the truth is out there for anyone who is dedicated to seeking it. In other words, if you don’t know the entire Anunnaki story and timeline then I’m not here to share it with you, it’s out there for those who choose to seek it. I do want to cover what I believe are fraudulent lies and misinformation in The Books of Enoch and in any Biblical book for that matter but I just want to focus on the book at hand.
Lies/Misinformation/Half-Truths
1. The being masquerading as god, Jehovah or YHWH or Anu or Enlil is not the creator of that was, all that is, and all that ever will be. This is not an Anunnaki story but this is obviously the first lie. As a matter of fact, the being masquerading as god, Jehovah or YHWH or Anu or Enlil is not even responsible for the creation of humanity. I will cover that second point after this first. There is only one universal creator of all that was, is and ever will be. He doesn’t go by god nor is he even a being. (Being in the sense as a Human being or Anunnaki being) The universal creator, supreme creator, prime creator is nothing more than a cosmic energy where we humans and all other beings in the universal originate from (our souls). The most intelligent energy imaginable. This is the Law of One. That we are all one; all beings around the universe too include plants, animals, insects, and fish. We all derive from the same cosmic consciousness; therefore, we are all related. The fact this being from planet Nibiru is masquerading as a creator of all is the first flat-out lie. This border lines the despotism and tyranny of any past human dictator to declare himself as god or president or fuehrer whatever he calls himself.
2. There is only one creator of humanity, actually two others helped the one but the one is overall responsible. Humanity’s true God and the second flat-lie by the being masquerading as god, Jehovah or YHWH or Anu or Enlil is Lord Enki according to the Sumerians. To the Nibiruans he is called Ea, to the Egyptians he is called Ptah, to the Greeks he was known as Prometheus and the Romans known him as Neptune. He is also known as the light-bearer. We will call him what the Sumerians called him which is Enki. It was Lord Enki with the help of his half-sister, the Mother Goddess known as Ninhursag. She was also known as NIN.TI – “lady of who gives life”. The other who assisted in our creation was Lord Enki’s son, Thoth. He is also known as Hermes to the Greeks. Our very medical symbol used to this day is the symbol of Enki and his son Thoth. It was Lord Enki who attempted to save the human race on many, many occasions. It was Lord Enki who gave humanity the fire of knowledge. It was Lord Enki who gave us his DNA and their abilities (Kundalini Energy and our Charkas specifically the third eye and crown Charkas that allow us to see beyond this reality and to leave our bodies to multidimensional travel). This one act that Enki did, caused hatred within his half-brother Enlil (Jehovah or whatever the hell you want to call him) and it was Enlil that promised humanity bondage and slavery. This one act that our God, Lord Enki did for us during the creation in Enlil’s (Jehovah) eyes was a massive sin, one of the original sins. The Sons of Light (Enki, his family, and his followers) want humanity to evolve to higher levels of consciousness through the activation of our Kundalini and Chakras so that we can be gods like them. This is what the ancient mystery schools taught, how it evolve to higher levels of being, humanity’s true nature. This is where humans were before the fall of Atlantis (Enki creation). The other faction, the Sons of Dark (Anu, Enlil, his family, and followers) want humanity to stay down in this material reality. They don’t want us to evolve to be like them. Humans evolving are a threat to their power because with our third eye activated we will know the truth.
3. Adam and Eve never sinned in the Garden of Eden. Lord Enki (symbolized by the serpent) saved humanity again by offering Eve to eat the fruit from the tree of good and evil. This was a blessing and not a curse/sin. If Lord Enki never provided Eve with this knowledge, Humanity will still be at the mercy of hostile gods serving their hostile agenda of domination and control. I call this a lie because the Bible and Books of Enoch make it out as if Adam and Eve sinned but they didn’t. They were saved by their creator and the creator masquerading as god, Jehovah or YHWH or Anu or Enlil who told Eve not eat from tree of good and evil is actually Satan in my opinion with Lord Enki being the true God. Why would Jehovah/YHWY want to keep humanity from not knowing good or evil? Hmmm, not hard to figure out.
4. The fourth lie is that the being masquerading as god, Jehovah or YHWH or Anu or Enlil stated in both the Books of Enoch and the Bible that he flooded the earth based on all humans sinning. Again, once you know the Anunnaki story and their planet, this is a lie as well. The flood was derived from natural causes; specifically their Planet Nibiru on one of its many 3,600 year rotations around our sun caused the ice to slip in Antarctica which intern caused a massive tidal wave. When Nibiru passed between the Sun and Earth on its pass, the Planet being many, many times the size of Earth causes massive weather disruptions on our planet and within our solar system. The first couple of paragraphs in revelations in the bible refer to the chaos that this planet causes in our solar system. This is reason we were created, although it’s beyond this book review that Lord Enki, had a strategic master plan behind our creation which is why he blessed us with their abilities and this plan will come to blossom at another point in future, probably during the return. Nevertheless, we were fashioned to be a slave race of the gods. Did these beings from Nibiru or angles as the Book of Enoch and the bible call them have sex with human women? Of course, who wouldn’t, we have beautiful earth females. But what is a lie is that not ALL of them are demonic as the book of Enoch described. That is kind of a racist/stereotypical comment if you ask me. That’s like saying, all nonwhite humans are criminals and smoke weed. Were Achilles, Hercules, Alexander the great demonic? If you are on the fence about God or if you are someone who is rapidly awakening to truth then don’t waste your time on this book it will only confuse you and not to mention have you worshipping false gods. With that said, I have thoroughly studied the ancient astronaut theory; specifically the story of the Anunnaki and even more specific the royal bloodlines of the Anunnaki to include the twelfth planet in our Solar System where they come from, Nibiru. I have studied human consciousness, the lost city of Atlantis, Sumerian, Egyptian, and Greek civilizations and mythology. I’m also a firm believer that history is written by the victors, in this case the victors were the Sons of Dark who came to power after fall of Atlantis (the lost city and all it’s amazing knowledge was created and taught by our true God, Lord Enki) and who have been in power ever since. In my opinion, it was the Sons of Dark that gave the word that created The Books of Enoch and of course the Bible. I will make this review as short as possible; the truth is out there for anyone who is dedicated to seeking it. In other words, if you don’t know the entire Anunnaki story and timeline then I’m not here to share it with you, it’s out there for those who choose to seek it. I do want to cover what I believe are fraudulent lies and misinformation in The Books of Enoch and in any Biblical book for that matter but I just want to focus on the book at hand.
Lies/Misinformation/Half-Truths
1. The being masquerading as god, Jehovah or YHWH or Anu or Enlil is not the creator of that was, all that is, and all that ever will be. This is not an Anunnaki story but this is obviously the first lie. As a matter of fact, the being masquerading as god, Jehovah or YHWH or Anu or Enlil is not even responsible for the creation of humanity. I will cover that second point after this first. There is only one universal creator of all that was, is and ever will be. He doesn’t go by god nor is he even a being. (Being in the sense as a Human being or Anunnaki being) The universal creator, supreme creator, prime creator is nothing more than a cosmic energy where we humans and all other beings in the universal originate from (our souls). The most intelligent energy imaginable. This is the Law of One. That we are all one; all beings around the universe too include plants, animals, insects, and fish. We all derive from the same cosmic consciousness; therefore, we are all related. The fact this being from planet Nibiru is masquerading as a creator of all is the first flat-out lie. This border lines the despotism and tyranny of any past human dictator to declare himself as god or president or fuehrer whatever he calls himself.
2. There is only one creator of humanity, actually two others helped the one but the one is overall responsible. Humanity’s true God and the second flat-lie by the being masquerading as god, Jehovah or YHWH or Anu or Enlil is Lord Enki according to the Sumerians. To the Nibiruans he is called Ea, to the Egyptians he is called Ptah, to the Greeks he was known as Prometheus and the Romans known him as Neptune. He is also known as the light-bearer. We will call him what the Sumerians called him which is Enki. It was Lord Enki with the help of his half-sister, the Mother Goddess known as Ninhursag. She was also known as NIN.TI – “lady of who gives life”. The other who assisted in our creation was Lord Enki’s son, Thoth. He is also known as Hermes to the Greeks. Our very medical symbol used to this day is the symbol of Enki and his son Thoth. It was Lord Enki who attempted to save the human race on many, many occasions. It was Lord Enki who gave humanity the fire of knowledge. It was Lord Enki who gave us his DNA and their abilities (Kundalini Energy and our Charkas specifically the third eye and crown Charkas that allow us to see beyond this reality and to leave our bodies to multidimensional travel). This one act that Enki did, caused hatred within his half-brother Enlil (Jehovah or whatever the hell you want to call him) and it was Enlil that promised humanity bondage and slavery. This one act that our God, Lord Enki did for us during the creation in Enlil’s (Jehovah) eyes was a massive sin, one of the original sins. The Sons of Light (Enki, his family, and his followers) want humanity to evolve to higher levels of consciousness through the activation of our Kundalini and Chakras so that we can be gods like them. This is what the ancient mystery schools taught, how it evolve to higher levels of being, humanity’s true nature. This is where humans were before the fall of Atlantis (Enki creation). The other faction, the Sons of Dark (Anu, Enlil, his family, and followers) want humanity to stay down in this material reality. They don’t want us to evolve to be like them. Humans evolving are a threat to their power because with our third eye activated we will know the truth.
3. Adam and Eve never sinned in the Garden of Eden. Lord Enki (symbolized by the serpent) saved humanity again by offering Eve to eat the fruit from the tree of good and evil. This was a blessing and not a curse/sin. If Lord Enki never provided Eve with this knowledge, Humanity will still be at the mercy of hostile gods serving their hostile agenda of domination and control. I call this a lie because the Bible and Books of Enoch make it out as if Adam and Eve sinned but they didn’t. They were saved by their creator and the creator masquerading as god, Jehovah or YHWH or Anu or Enlil who told Eve not eat from tree of good and evil is actually Satan in my opinion with Lord Enki being the true God. Why would Jehovah/YHWY want to keep humanity from not knowing good or evil? Hmmm, not hard to figure out.

I admit to having read this largely because I'd just finished Memnoch the Devil, wondered where all the theological and historical theories in it had come from, and found that the answer was Enoch. As a creation myth, this is a detailed and curious one, and it adds some background to the biography of John Dee that I so enjoyed last year, The Queen's Conjurer: The Science and Magic of Dr. John Dee, Advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. It further makes me smile to speculate that Rice's next book, The Vampire Armand, with all its detail on the Slavonic Church, was partly inspired by the Slavonic history she turned up while researching the Book of Enoch.
In short, this is a book that diverted me for a few summer days, and that I found interesting largely for its relationship to other books. I would probably have more to say about it if I had more knowledge about Christian history, mysticism or angelology, and perhaps one day when I do I will give it a second reading.
Edit: I agree with another reviewer that this is a very readable translation, and that the annotations are very helpful.

Excellent book for anyone interested in lore about angels, demons, etc and bonus points if you've read the Bible - you'll notice some eerie similarities between some of the language and Jesus' beatitudes (the "blessed are..." statements) in the New Testament. One thing to take note of: the lore about the Watchers is only a small part of the Books of Enoch, and is not laid out in a narrative format - if that's what you were looking for in relation to the Watchers. Otherwise, a great source of angel lore and essentially reading for 'angel enthusiasts' - or whatever people interested in angels want to call themselves, whatever works - 'Angelologists', maybe?

I ended up mostly skimming this book, because even trying to read it with an open mind, I was totally nauseated with the "everyone kissing the Lord's ass" and how he would destroy the evil ones, over and over and over. I'm wondering if Revelations came from this?
This actually has nothing negative against the author, it was strictly the words and basically the thoughts of those who willingly choose to believe in this type of deity.

Enlightening . . . Connects the dots
This book is easy to understand and covers information that relates stories in the Bible, providing background information that the writers of Scripture were intimately familiar with. It answers most of the questions Sunday School lessons didn't answer. A bigger question is, Why did the church hierarchy take these books out. The Ethiopian Church kept them. Read for understanding.
I highly recommend this book, especially to Christians.

In 1768, James Bruce, a Scottish Freemason, went on a journey claiming to be searching for the source of the Nile. Some of his actions, however, suggest that he may have been looking for something more esoteric as well. Legend had it that the sacred Ark of the Covenant was located in Ethiopia. After arriving in that country, Bruce became interested in a different kind of treasure. He wrote that he was spending much of his time “within the libraries of ramshackle monasteries, fingering through dusty volumes of neglected religious works, many hoary with age and in a state of advanced disintegration.” In 1773 he returned to the U.K. and brought back at least 27 manuscripts, including three copies of the Ethiopic Book of Enoch.
Ethiopic Enoch, or the First Book of Enoch, is an apocryphal work which is included in the Bible of the Oriental Orthodox church. It is believed to have influenced many of the passages included in our modern-day Bibles. The Book of Enoch that James Bruce brought back from Ethiopia wasn’t completely translated into English until 1821, by a linguist named Richard Laurence. His translation became so popular in America that an American printing was done in 1828, two years before Joseph Smith produced the Mormon Enoch writings. What many readers do not realize is that Ethiopic Enoch had a large circulation before James Bruce brought it out of Ethiopia. There were texts on Enoch which were in circulation in Britain and Europe prior to 1700. Fabricus produced a translation with commentary in Latin in 1713. Grabe did an English translation in 1715, and Whiston did one in 1727. James Bruce himself made partial translations in English in 1790 and 1813. De Sacy partially translated Enoch into French in 1800, and Rink in German in 1801.

Recent years have seen a resurgence in the appeal of the Book of Enoch by New Age adherents, Bible enthusiasts, and critical scholars. Joseph Lumpkin, author and journalist with a Doctor of Ministry degree from Battlefield Baptist Institute, has joined the ranks of those publishing on the Enoch pseudepigrapha. I commend Dr. Lumpkin for making available an English translation of all three Books of Enoch in one place. The book provides an easy and inexpensive way for the curious to sample Enochian literature in a popular edition.
Dr. Lumpkin gives a short introduction to each volume of the Book of Enoch, explaining its importance and provenance. He then offers a version of each. In the case of First Enoch, the translation comes from the 1821 Richard Laurence and 1912 R.H. Charles manuscripts, compared and occasionally “rendered” into a more modern phrasing. Second Enoch uses the Charles, and the W.R. Morfill translation of 1896, with some small additions from “other sources.” Again, archaic terms are revised. Lastly, the author has taken the Third Book of Enoch largely from a gathering of fragments published in Hebrew in 1928 by Dr. Hugo Odeberg. The reader is not able to ascertain if Dr. Lumpkin translated the Hebrew into English himself; also unclear is whether the explanatory notes come from Odeberg, Lumpkin, or some other source. Many of them seem different in tone and style than the notes Dr. Lumpkin has included in the other sections of the book.
Within the translated text of each of the Books of Enoch, Lumpkin inserts scriptures from the Bible which address similar themes, or which appear to have been influenced by the Enoch literature. Some of these seem more relevant than others. For example, I Enoch 64:2 reads “I heard the voice of the angel saying: ‘These are the angels who descended to the earth, and revealed what was hidden to the children of men and seduced the children of men into committing sin.’” Following this verse, Dr. Lumpkin inserts the scripture from Jude 1:6 reading “And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.” The juxtaposition is helpful because the verse in Jude seems influenced by First Enoch in this instance. However, in other places, the verses seem to be only loosely related by topic, such as when I Enoch 69:11, “For men were created exactly like the angels, to the intent that they should continue pure and righteous; and death, which destroys everything, should not have taken hold of them, but through this their knowledge they are perishing, and through this power consumes them” is followed by Romans 5:12 “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” These two seem related only by the general topic of death.
Lumpkin also inserts his own observations and notes directly into the text. Some of these notes will appeal to Biblical enthusiasts, such as his handling of the divine assembly of gods and its relation to fallen angels (p. 87). Other comments will interest the student of esoterica, such as Lumpkin’s discussion of occultist John Dee (which name he sometimes misspells as “Dees”) and the reception of what he called the “Enochian or Angelical language” (pp. 90-91). The book is too popular a treatment to appeal to more serious scholars. Some, for instance, Ann Nyland, have done their own translations from the original languages. These experts criticize Lumpkin for using older translations from the public domain and not taking advantage of recent scholarship. The version of the Enoch texts found in James H. Charlesworth’s “The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha” continue to be the scholarly standard.
Finally, Dr. Lumpkin has included some inventive original work in two sections. One is an application of the Calendar of Enoch to the prophecy of Daniel and “Daniel’s Week of Years.” The other is a collection of narratives from at least ten ancient pseudepigraphic texts into a piece titled “The Fallen Angels, The Watchers, and The Origins of Evil.” The author calls this a “story,” but he makes no attempt at amalgamation. He simply presents, one by one, portions of the texts which pertain to his topic.
It appears to me that this book is a culmination and gathering of several separate pieces that Dr. Lumpkin has done in the past. Fifth Estate Publishing is his own company, so I wonder if he employed a professional editor to review his work. I noticed several mistakes that could have benefitted from a good editor. The introduction to the Book of First Enoch mentions that “the books of 2 Enoch and 3 Enoch have been of little influence within mainline Christianity. However, 1 Enoch, addressed in this work is of major and amazing influence within the modern Christian world…” Since this book now includes and addresses the Second and Third Books of Enoch, his introduction should have been updated. He also recaps the history of the First Book of Enoch in his introduction to the Second Book, which should not have been necessary in a single volume. Also, the formatting of the author’s notes differs for each of the Books of Enoch. In First Enoch, the notes are placed in parentheses, with the words “Author’s Note,” and the biblical references are italicized. In the Second Enoch translation, there are no biblical references, and the author’s notes are italicized and in parentheses, with the word “Note.” In Third Enoch, the notes are simply italicized and no parentheses are used. This inconsistency is confusing, and should have been standardized throughout.
While Lumpkin’s work will not satisfy those whose interests are scholarly, it is serviceable as an inexpensive popular edition.

In the case of First Enoch, the translation comes from the 1821 Richard Laurence and 1912 R.H. Charles manuscripts, compared and occasionally “rendered” into a more modern phrasing. Second Enoch uses the Charles, and the W.R. Morfill translation of 1896, with some small additions from “other sources.” Again, archaic terms are revised. Lastly, the author has taken the Third Book of Enoch largely from a gathering of fragments published in Hebrew in 1928 by Dr. Hugo Odeberg. The reader is not able to ascertain if Dr. Lumpkin translated the Hebrew into English himself; also unclear is whether the explanatory notes come from Odeberg, Lumpkin, or some other source. Many of them seem different in tone and style than the notes Dr. Lumpkin has included in the other sections of the book.
Within the translated text of each of the Books of Enoch, Lumpkin inserts scriptures from the Bible which address similar themes, or which appear to have been influenced by the Enoch literature. Some of these seem more relevant than others. For example, I Enoch 64:2 reads “I heard the voice of the angel saying: ‘These are the angels who descended to the earth, and revealed what was hidden to the children of men and seduced the children of men into committing sin.’” Following this verse, Dr. Lumpkin inserts the scripture from Jude 1:6 reading “And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.” The juxtaposition is helpful because the verse in Jude seems influenced by First Enoch in this instance. However, in other places, the verses seem to be only loosely related by topic, such as when I Enoch 69:11, “For men were created exactly like the angels, to the intent that they should continue pure and righteous; and death, which destroys everything, should not have taken hold of them, but through this their knowledge they are perishing, and through this power consumes them” is followed by Romans 5:12 “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” These two seem related only by the general topic of death.
Lumpkin also inserts his own observations and notes directly into the text. Some of these notes will appeal to Biblical enthusiasts, such as his handling of the divine assembly of gods and its relation to fallen angels (p. 87). Other comments will interest the student of esoterica, such as Lumpkin’s discussion of occultist John Dee (which name he sometimes misspells as “Dees”) and the reception of what he called the “Enochian or Angelical language” (pp. 90-91). The book is too popular a treatment to appeal to more serious scholars. Some, for instance, Ann Nyland, have done their own translations from the original languages. These experts criticize Lumpkin for using older translations from the public domain and not taking advantage of recent scholarship. The version of the Enoch texts found in James H. Charlesworth’s “The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha” continue to be the scholarly standard.
Finally, Dr. Lumpkin has included some inventive original work in two sections. One is an application of the Calendar of Enoch to the prophecy of Daniel and “Daniel’s Week of Years.” The other is a collection of narratives from at least ten ancient pseudepigraphic texts into a piece titled “The Fallen Angels, The Watchers, and The Origins of Evil.” The author calls this a “story,” but he makes no attempt at amalgamation. He simply presents, one by one, portions of the texts which pertain to his topic.
It appears to me that this book is a culmination and gathering of several separate pieces that Dr. Lumpkin has done in the past. Fifth Estate Publishing is his own company, so I wonder if he employed a professional editor to review his work. I noticed several mistakes that could have benefitted from a good editor. The introduction to the Book of First Enoch mentions that “the books of 2 Enoch and 3 Enoch have been of little influence within mainline Christianity. However, 1 Enoch, addressed in this work is of major and amazing influence within the modern Christian world…” Since this book now includes and addresses the Second and Third Books of Enoch, his introduction should have been updated. He also recaps the history of the First Book of Enoch in his introduction to the Second Book, which should not have been necessary in a single volume. Also, the formatting of the author’s notes differs for each of the Books of Enoch. In First Enoch, the notes are placed in parentheses, with the words “Author’s Note,” and the biblical references are italicized. In the Second Enoch translation, there are no biblical references, and the author’s notes are italicized and in parentheses, with the word “Note.” In Third Enoch, the notes are simply italicized and no parentheses are used. This inconsistency is confusing, and should have been standardized throughout.
While Lumpkin’s work will not satisfy those whose interests are scholarly, it is serviceable as an inexpensive popular edition.

Well if anything, this book has filled my brain with intense *light* angels with fiery eyes and tongues (because I pass on the fallen ones, obv :) ). Enoch is a fascinating ancient holy figure who was described as 'walking faithfully with God and then was no more, for God took him away' (Gen 5:24). A highly spiritually advanced being, some sources state he was translated into angel Metatron, but I've also heard other entities. (The name Metatron has always felt very off to me, and the fact that it's not mentioned in the Hebrew Bible makes it easy to doubt / debate that name's origin). Wanting to learn more about Enoch and other angels, I was cued to read these texts that were once popular before the compilation of the present Bible—which, along with many other books, became discredited after the Council of Laodicea c. 364 AD—even if to me it's no mere coincidence that said Bible has come to us in a certain way. Perhaps the texts could provide insight to serious scholars on how ancient texts evolve.
An interesting tidbit is that while there are 3 books of Enoch, it's the first Ethiopic text which is considered 'inspired' by some and the most influential to the modern Christian world.
Despite the more detailed accounts of the fallen angels and the light angels involved—with Michael and Gabriel being once more core entities in these events, along with others—overall I wasn’t as ‘blown away’ as I thought I’d be. So while it’s interesting to read, given its similarity to Genesis and Exodus, I (perhaps surprisingly) didn’t feel that it omits anything of spiritual importance not already included in some form in the current canon. Some passages are exceedingly repetitive, adding another potential explanation as to the Bible’s present state.
Worthwhile for anyone interested in ancient religious texts and/or comparative studies. It’s also revived my interest in wanting to read the Dead Sea Scrolls (I’m looking at you, War Scroll!)

Provocative in its expansion beyond currently accepted church texts. The Books expose a lushly rich and mystical version of both Heaven and Hell with affirming and brutal consequences, for both Man and Angels, including insightful details into the classes of angels and the origins of Noah. The Books of Enoch are not widely practiced or even studied, outside of a small area in Africa, which is a true shame since they bring into the forefront and focus on the smaller ideas and characters found in the Christian Bible. A must read for anyone interested in religious texts.

Amazing understand of the cycle of the sun and moon etc - measurement of time.

Right hand is symbol of power and authority - held behind back means not using the authority available to you. God is inactive since it would mean He would have to judge His apostate people. He awaits his people to return to him in a righteous state. - reason why some bad things happen?
Chapter 45 teaches of two Messiahs - separate?. One Messiah is seen as a peacemaker and teacher, who brings mercy. The second - (son of David) is seen s a warrior, destroyer, bringer of justice. One comes in peace and the other is determined to do war to avenge God and Israel. First Messiah - (son of Joseph) will be killed for his attempt to make peace. - this versus Christian view that it will be the same Messiah that will return from heaven as the warrior of God. - Messiah of the house of David will come at this time and right hand be extended - no longer held behind back.
48C:12 Unborn, nursing babies and those who die while studying the Torah are guiltless before God. It is interesting that scholars should be included in this list of innocents.
48D:2 - Moses learned all in the storehouses of wisdom - more than just getting the ten commandments when he was on the mount for 40 days.

Sist jag läste denna var jag djupt i Graal-tempelherreträsket, och sökte information om varför Azazel var sedd som fördömd. Denna gång läser jag den i ljus av en youtube-video som diskuterar antika judiska sekter, och kristendomen i ljuset av dem. I båda fallen är det väl med mindre än botfärdigt sinne; men denna bok är en apokryf, och jag är inte nödvändigtvis benägen att betro den med något slags inspiration eller auktoritet utan vidare, och därför får den stå på egna ben. Som sådan är den mindre uppenbart helig än till och med Waites tolkningar av johannes uppenbarelser (för att återgå till graaltemat). Detta sagt, så är det naturligtvis intressant att se att det finns passager som tydligt föregriper kristendomens treenighet (i åtminstone fader och sons gestalt). Här skall det för sakens skull tilläggas att jag inte är djupbevandrad i judisk mystik men att till och med jag vet att gudastatusen - eller snarare gudasamvaron/gudalikheten - inte är unik för JHVH i den mystiken. Tänker på kulten kring Metatron, och namnet "andarnas herre" som tillskrivs JHVH i antik mystik. Det är fullt möjligt att en mer kunnig, rabbintränad individ skulle säga att beskrivningen av gestalten i kap 47 snarare skall läsas symboliskt än som en separat gestalt. Men ändå.

I loved Books 1 and 2. They were so awesome amazing that I couldn’t put them down. Book 3 was a completely different flavor and didn’t seem to fit with the others. I suspect it had an author other than Enoch.

1 Enoch was the best. It is very informative. It answered a lot of the questions I had after reading the Bible. The Bible just has a few verses about this mysterious Enoch who pleases God SO MUCH that God just took him to Heaven without him dying. According to the Bible Enoch just vanished one day. He was there and then God just took him. That will leave a lot of questions: Why was he just taken? How did he please God so much? What do you mean he just vanished?! Those and more questions were answered in 1 Enoch.
2 Enoch pretty much is a shorter narrative of things discussed in 1 Enoch. It has less detail. It’s like reading a Summary of events. I still enjoyed it very much.
3 Enoch was very strange lol. Is Enoch a man or an angel? You can’t be both by the way. Is he Enoch or does he have another name? It’s very peculiar but I still enjoyed it. It gave me more questions lol.

Enoch ! - Interesting. Enoch 2 - tiresome, redundant. Enoch 3 - Grating on my nerves. If this depicts how God really is, then I think He has issues. Perhaps a Love-Hate complex towards humans. Any entity that requires that amount of excess worship from its creations must be starved for something beyond imagining. ... So. I suspect this is some mans interpretation of a God in his view a God should be if he were a god. I'll stick with a Loving Father in a Heaven that has formed a Plan whereby His Spirit off springs (god embryos) can be born into a world where their spirit can be joined to a body and progress to a point, come to a knowledge of J.C., adhere to the teachings of J.C. and all will be fine in the end.

Absolutely Fascinating
I've been wanting to read this book for a very long time. It is a part of Biblical history and definitely needs to be read by people who want to survive the upheaval that is currently occurring in our world today. God loves us so much and Enoch gives us all Holy Direction (God's Holy Direction). Praise the Lord for this book!
To me, the most fascinating part is the humongous list of Angels. There is also a lesser but complete and thoroughly impressive list of Demons in the last chapter.
After reading this book, I now know the origins of witchcraft - which I used to be into, but now, I completely understand and agree with why it should definitely be avoided.

Overall, the book was an easy read and had interesting pieces of commentary on the the ancient Book of Enoch. I found the section on the Enochian calendar particularly fascinating and a topic I will be pursuing in the future. With that said, the book seems to be lacking in needed citations for some of the author's claims that are presented. So while the book may be interesting, I have to take some of the author's statements with a grain of salt since there is no citation to back up certain claims. It makes it quite frustrating when trying to validate information for further study.

This is a badly needed updated translation of the three books of Enoch. I don't have much to whine about, other than I wish there had been more references and commentary. For example, I wish I knew what the author's view was on when 3 Enoch was written. And the author's bending over backwards to show gender correctness went a bit far sometimes, such as the passage that read "our ancestor Human" rather than "our ancestor Adam".
