It is a historically important text in writings on wine, dating from 1965. The scholarship is vast, the style mannered. I find it irritating that Hyams will quote from Latin, French and Spanish works without giving a translation - like we are all supposed to be fluent in these languages? Wine history and knowledge has moved on a deal since Hyam; yet we must remain grateful to him for several gems of erudition and insight. (PS I bought this book 2nd hand in August 1990 - I know because the receipt is still inside - so it has only taken me 29 years to get round to reading it.)
