Pretty Little Mistake

Rate this book
What happens when the one person you thought you’d never see again waltzes back into your life? One scandalizing night in an emotional novel by a USA Today bestselling author. Lennon Wells and Beckham Sullivan should have been perfect for each other. Both vulnerable, both striving to please difficult families, and both broken by the past. Going from friends to lovers seemed inevitable. So did a bad ending. They thought―they hoped―they’d never see each other again. Years later, bad luck or fate, Lennon and Beckham find themselves working for the same magazine. The wounds are still raw, but the chemistry is there. Then they’re forced to work together on a project. Some things never change, and all it takes is one impetuous night. One mistake. And Lennon discovers she’s pregnant. With more in common than they ever had before, Lennon and Beckham are going to be in each other’s lives for a long time now, whether they like it or not. And they’re starting to. If only they can break from the generational traumas that hold tight and take a shot at something they never a second chance.

please, just help me end this goddamn slump ✨

it’s me, again. don’t come here if you enjoyed this book. the fact i actually finished it? i’m pretty sure i need a reward for putting the effort. first of all, Beckham was a perfect example of how a horny fuckboish teenage boy acts. whoever actually likes that man, respectfully, please get yourself checked. a few things of the many he has done or said - wich made me grit my teeth and move on before i could bang my head against the wall? called her a bitch when she did nothing wrong, was a mean asshole with no reason for saying spiteful and rude comments, did NOT care about her feelings or wellbeing, shut the door in her face more than once (spoiler: he already knew she was carrying their child), called said child a pet sperm. the amount of times they both said “Not that I’ll ever be telling him/her that.”, ohmy, grow up.
if i wanted to experience a relationship with a toxic man, Tinder would be my choice. but hey! it did help with my slump, i was so invested in what more shitty things that child (Beckham) could do before i lose my goddamn mind, i actually wanted to finish it as soon as possible. “Apparently, I’m not as coldhearted as I thought.” get out, for the love of god, get out, you bad boy wannabe.

I love Micalea Smeltzer's writing, and this story was good, but it felt like it was missing something for me. I'm not sure if it was the chemistry or the pacing but I just never got fully into it. I do love a good surprise pregnancy book and the ending was super cute.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I went into this book slightly biased and with big expectations because the Wildflower duet was one of my favourite reads from 2022. It completely shocked me, tore my heart out then stitched it back together, and I was left feeling like ‘how dare a book duet be this good?!’

So it’s safe to say nothing was going to live up to my expectations. 🥲 But Pretty Little Mistake came close!

My favourite parts of this book
⭐️ second chance romance
⭐️ office romance
⭐️ surprise pregnancy (I honestly love this trope when it’s well written)
⭐️ in-depth on-page character development
⭐️ witty banter dished out by both MCs

Some of the side characters were unnecessarily annoying and the relationship arc was a bit drawn out. I also could have done with some more third act drama (I never usually criticise this but in this book it felt like there could have been more). But all in all I enjoyed reading this and highly recommend anything and everything by Micalea!

this sooo hit the spot for me. the perfect grumpy/sunshine, fluffy, surprise pregnancy read.

lennon and beckham were *something* once upon a time but that ended abruptly and she never knew why. fast forward to day one at her new job and imagine her horror when he’s now her coworker AND they get put on a project together. one business trip and a little hate youknowwhat later, they’re now really stuck together.

i loved how grumpy he was. their dynamic was so fun and the banter was so good. i also loveddd that even though they had their one night, there was still a slow buildup to their actual relationship and their enemies to lovers dynamic didn’t just disappear after one night. he’s also my favorite kind of grump where he does the cutest little things that reveal how much he cares.

if you’ve read micalea from the wildflower duet, this is not the emotional angst-fest that was. but this was such a cute, good read and i love them sm.

This is going to be a short review because I'm writing this review two weeks after finishing it and I can't remember anything. The book was good but not amazing. Clearly, it wasn't life-changing if I can't remember what I read. It was short and sweet and I enjoyed it in the moment.

Quick Recap:
Our FMC, Lennon has just finished university and is starting a new job at a lifestyle magazine. What she didn't expect was that the lead photographer at the magazine would be her childhood crush and the guy who broke her heart. They haven't seen each other in years and they both hate each other. Beckham, our MMC, was Lennon's brother's best friend and they were all very close. But after their first time, he suddenly disappeared and they haven't been in contact since.

There is a lot of animosity between them and they try to avoid each other and their connection. Beckham from the start was overly rude and it made me want to punch him cause wtf. But after being put together by their boss on a project, they have to spend a lot of unexpected time together. One night in Chicago eventually leads to them having to be in each other's lives for the next 18 years (if you know what I mean🤰🏽)

Once they found out she was pregnant, Beckham's character got a lot better. He literally was doing everything and anything for Lennon or as he calls her "honeybee". I literally thought that nickname was so cute. He would do the smallest things but they truly showed how much he cared for her (the nursery iykyk). The banter between them was so good and the chemistry was undeniable. There was so much buildup towards their relationship and the slow burn was burning. The slow burn was towards them being together emotionally not physically. I actually really enjoyed the surprise pregnancy, it wasn't one I was rooting against. They actually worked together very well, they had a good dynamic and clearly, they both really wanted the baby. He was very supportive throughout the whole process. Also the way they called the baby Bee, after her nickname was ADORABLE<3

My Fav Quotes
"I called Lennon a honeybee, and to me, that’s what she was, but I never told her the rest, that I was the flower dependent on her for survival."

"I hate to admit it, but anything she’d ever want, I’d go to the ends of the earth to make sure she got."

"She’s my favorite thing to worry about."

"Forever begins when you start living for yourself and stop answering to other people."

5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My first book by this author, and I absolutely loved it!!!

What a sweet love story, peppered with several hot steamy scenes, but mainly a wonderful journey on trusting to love and be loved.

I normally do not like second chance love stories, because I feel we miss out on getting to see the magic of them initially falling in love. Not only that, I also find second chance love stories starting off with two former lovers that have been hurt for whatever reason in the past and they always start the book off with angry, hateful attitudes. But this book here… did everything right for me. Yes, the story starts off 6 years after The Big Break-Up, but they were teenagers at that time. Now they are adults and that sits better with me as I don’t take teenage love too seriously. So I still had the feeling of getting to watch them fall in love and admit it finally.

I loved how the author handled their feelings of anger towards each other in the beginning. It felt authentic and relatable to me. It wasn’t over the top nastiness for shock value, just real emotions and mean comments that I found as realistic dialogue.

In general, I found the authors voice and storytelling relatable, not cheesy but incredible sweet, the hero redeemed himself 100 times over with how caring he was of his pregnant little lady… speaking of, the heroine WAS a little salty every now and then, but I excused it as pregnancy hormones. Otherwise, their banter was fun, hero’s parents were awesome, heroine’s bff was fun, I teared up a few times with the hero’s reaction on becoming a father (he was so excited)… the story kept me captivated the whole way thru.

like always the characters settings plot dialogues i mean everything was so on point.
i once again laughed and smiled stupidly in front on my screen for hours it was so good !!!
if your a fan of second chance romance, grumpyxsunshine, forced proximity, second chance, workplace romance and the famous pregnancy trope than i definitely recommend it’s a 5⭐️ for me

I think this could have been cute but I DNFed around 30% because the dialogue felt super stiff and
'slang-y' at the same time. Not exactly the vibe I was looking for but overall the story was really cute.

I could see myself coming back to this one!

This started so badly I seriously considered DNF’ing it. The writing was basic, and the MMC was so obnoxiously, childishly, inexcusably rude to the FMC IN THE WORKPLACE and in private that this reeked of strained, forced enemies-to-lovers plot device. It was painful.

And the “lovers” part came way too early as a result of unmitigated horniness. They supposedly hated each other but, as the hero so gallantly pointed out, that needn’t stop them from having sex.

Oopsie.

And shockingly, from that point on this novel got better and better. The writing style remained basic, but what was written became cute and funny and engaging, then morphed into warm and heart-warming and emotional. Never before have I experienced a book that began so unpromisingly build into such a satisfying read.

I really liked Beckham in this book because after a while, he really did everything for her.

The story starts with one of our main characters, Lennon. She got a new job at a lifestyle magazine but never expected to see the person that broke her heart there, after all those years.

Beckham was her brother's best friend and after they got together, he disapeared out of their lifes…

This personally wasn’t a book for me but I advise you to form your own opinion.

I didn’t like the female main character and it really made me cringe when she was talking about “lady farts”.

There are TW for this book (death of a parent,…)

Thank you to Netgalley, Micalea Smeltzer and the publisher for providing me with this copy. All opinions are my own.

3 ⭐️.

It wasn’t the worst book I’ve ever read, but it was nothing special. I was constantly irritated with how rude the MMC was. Truly aggravated me to the bone. Also, I think the FMC and MMC lacked chemistry. It was alright.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I love Micalea’s writing. There’s something so fluid and easy when she writes and it translates so good on the page. However, I didn’t love this book.

1) I couldn’t get over the cat named Cheddar. I know so many people who have named their cat that and I just wanted another name.

2) Okay the petname Beckham calls Lennon is pretty cute. Honeybee. Loved that.

3) I knew this was surprise pregnancy but I thought it would be later in the book. It happened too fast for my liking but that’s a me thing and nothing to do with the book. Other people probably love that the pregnancy happens around the 30% mark haha.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t finish it. It might get better, but my TBR is too long to power through something I’m not loving. However 3 star rating because the writing is great prose wise and there were elements I adored. I have several highlighted passages so that should tell you it’s not a fail at all.

Pleas pick this one up when it releases and give it a read! I’d love to know everyone’s thoughts on it! ♡

DNF at 20% because I just couldn’t find it in me to like the main characters. For adults, they acted sooo childish. Especially Beckham. He acted more like an angry toddler than anything else.
I don’t even know how to put into words with how much I didn’t like Lennon. Maybe it was the fact that anytime she’d see Beckham her body would betray her 🙄 (Iykyk)

Safe to say, this was not a book for me lol.

«Oh, Lennon, you don’t want to do that.
I love a challenge. I always win.»

Friends in the past, colleagues now, what could be better?

Beckham was Lennon's friend until one day he cuts off all communication and years later they become colleagues. He's a photographer at the publishing house where Lennon is employed, they could have played eye candy, but their boss puts the pair on a joint project and sends them on a trip to Chicago where their chemistry gets completely out of control.

Eventually, the three of them return. Him, her and a little souvenir.
I fell in love with this book, I loved the area where they worked, how together they coped and tried to heal the wounds of the past.
It was crazy cute to read about Lennon's new addiction to sweet tea.
Throughout the book they tried to be a team and be the perfect parents for their baby.

I can't wait to order this book and support in hand

Be sure to start reading it if you are into that sort of thing

**ARC provided in exchange for an honest review**

In Pretty Little Mistake by Micalea Smeltzer, Lennon and Beckham, two individuals with a shared past, reunite after years apart. Working together at a magazine, they find that the chemistry between them is still strong. However, a single impulsive night leads to an unexpected pregnancy, forcing them to confront their traumas and consider a second chance at love.

I had such a blast reading this book! The banter between the characters was on point and had me hooked the whole time. Beckham, the brooding bad boy, had a major chip on his shoulder. He tried to scare her off with his rude attitude, but she wasn't having any of it. Gotta admit, I'm usually not into office romances, but this one didn't bother me at all. There wasn't any unnecessary drama, and the characters grew so much throughout the story.

It took a while for Lennon and Beckham to finally admit their feelings, but when they did, it felt so natural and real. The author really took their time to build up their relationship, and I appreciated that. And let's talk about the surprise pregnancy twist! Seeing Beckham all protective and stepping up was absolutely heart-melting.

All in all, this book had it all—funny banter, character growth, and a romance that hit all the right spots. I was totally invested in Lennon and Beckham's journey, and I couldn't put the book down. Highly recommended for those who love a good dose of sass and swoon!

lesson again, don’t read book recs from bookstagram!

the characters are okay, the writing is weird and not in a good way, the plot seemed all over the place, there was an excess of major tropes (accidental pregnancy, coworkers, grumpyxsunshine, childhood friends to lovers, etc) and none of which was explored enough or done well

I really wanted to like this but it was so ridiculous, it was funny. Also, this thing really scaled the balances for me; they talk in the start of the book how peanut is a ridiculous name, then name their kid BEE. fuck off, what? just bee, not a nickname, just BEE. i know it’s relevant/sentimental to the story but still wtf, why would you dislike someone naming their kid peanut then name your kid something just as appalling?

Started with some potential but lost all of it by chapter 7. Was mostly just bored reading. Beckham’s character was trying to give tough guy that has soft spot for girl but all I saw was douche with not a lot of respect and little emotional intelligence.

Didn’t hate but wouldn’t recommend. 😬

“Insane. Life changing. It’s a pretty little mistake.” “A mistake?” He nods, cupping my jaw in a surprisingly tender way. “The best one we could make.”

I enjoyed this book! I really like Micalea’s writing and character development. Both characters had a lot of heart and went on an emotional journey to find one another again. At the beginning you could tell both characters had a lot of hurt they needed to work through.

With Beckett as the book went on and you got to see more from him and his past you really start to understand his character and he had so much growth throughout which was great to see. “Lennon Wells is my own personal hell. I vowed to stay away from her for that reason—but tonight I’m throwing away all sense of logic. All I want is to let her burn me.“

Lennon also had a lot of growth throughout the book. You could tell how hesitant she was to open herself up to Beckett again and I thought her learning to let him in again was so heartwarming. “Beckham Sullivan is dangerous—for my mind, my body, but most importantly my heart.“

Both characters had a lot of emotional work to go through and I liked seeing how they processed things and grew together along the way. I also enjoyed the office romance aspects and the banter between the two characters! I thought the accidental pregnancy was done well in this book as well!

I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed both narrators! 💜

Pretty Little Mistake is the newest book from Micalea Smeltzer. I’ve read a handful of books from this author now so I had this new release on my radar. Since this book is published with Montlake, it did come with the KU read and listen feature too, which is always a plus! This is a childhood friends to enemies to lovers, accidental/surprise pregnancy (it’s in the synopsis), second chance, and workplace romance!

Lennon and Beckham were each other’s firsts years ago, back when he was also her brother’s best friend. But now it’s been years and things didn’t end well between them. Now they find each other in the same city at the same time and even working at the same place. Forced to work together and travel together for work, they find themselves hating being around one another but also still having all those lusty feelings. While on a work trip they end up sharing a night together, which leads to her finding out she’s pregnant later!

“Insane. Life changing. It’s a pretty little mistake.”
“A mistake?”
He nods, cupping my jaw in a surprisingly tender way. “The best one we could make.”

This ended up being okay for me. I found myself frustrated with the main characters a lot though and at different times I didn’t enjoy them as people/characters. Which made it hard to root for them in the story. Beckham was adopted and that plays a part in his story. I liked seeing them try to make something between them work, for the sake of having a child together. They do have a little bit of back and forth longer than I think was needed, I just wanted them to admit their feelings sooner. His nickname for her is “Honey Bee”, which was cute. All in all this was okay, but if it didn’t have the audio I would have had a harder time getting through it honestly.

"Pretty Little Mistake" by Micalea Smeltzer is an emotionally charged second chance romance that captivated me from beginning to end. The story revolves around Lennon Wells and Beckham Sullivan, two individuals who have endured their fair share of pain and heartbreak. When fate brings them back together years later, working for the same magazine, their unresolved feelings resurface, and they are forced to confront the wounds of their past.
I particularly enjoyed the unique twist of Lennon discovering she is pregnant, which added an extra layer of complexity to the romance. Unlike other stories where pregnancy becomes the sole reason for a couple to stay together, Smeltzer skillfully weaves it into the narrative, making it an integral part of the characters' journey without overshadowing the romance itself.
As a first-time reader of Micalea Smeltzer's work, I was impressed by her storytelling ability. The chemistry between Lennon and Beckham was palpable, and their character development felt authentic and relatable. Smeltzer's writing style flowed effortlessly, drawing me deeper into the story with each page.
Overall, "Pretty Little Mistake" is a heartfelt and engaging novel that explores the power of second chances. It successfully balances the complexities of love, family expectations, and personal growth, making it a must-read for fans of contemporary romance. I look forward to delving into more of Micalea Smeltzer's books in the future.

He really thinks he has nothing to offer , that he is nothing. He has no idea that once upon a time, he was my everything.

This was my first Micalea Smeltzer book and I loved every second of it! This is a second chance, workplace romance with an accidental pregnancy involved. Lennon & Beckham were such a good match! They were truly equals and their banter never failed to entertain me. The side characters except Laurel weren't that great but I still enjoyed the story. The part where the baby was finally born was so heartwarming and I loved how Beckham subtly took care of Lennon even when he wasn't sure if he deserved her. They weren't together throughout the entire length of the book but they were a team in a sense. I always felt like they belonged together and I was rooting for them to realise the fact too. The epilogue was adorable and I just couldn't get enough of the book. It was definitely a good read!

It is a fine story but there were just a few too many things that detracted from my enjoyment of the book.

The audiobook does require some editing as it becomes a bit choppy in places.
Also, to each their own, but for me personally, don’t enjoy books where ‘friends’ jokingly call each other s!uts & hussy, just for sleeping with someone. Just felt like they were thing to hard to be cool.

Really wanted to like this but the FMC just made so many stupid decisions (the smallest of which being telling him she has passed wind when she was thinking about something else…what the hell did I just read?!)

“Ah, why must they get the guys surname…what did he do? “Don’t test me women”.
- She is literally in labour during this conversation
