Christmas Carol Kauffman (December 25, 1901 - January 30, 1969) was a Mennonite author of inspirational Christian literature. Kauffman was best known for her semi-biographical novels, and her writings were largely based on the life stories of people she met through the mission work she performed with her husband, pastor Nelson E. Kauffman. She is mother of James Kauffman. -wikipedia
Different edition, this was a hardback published in 1948 with some differences in text: this one cuts right to the action without describing the setting. The dialogues are not as "fluttery" ("Oh-h-h, we-ell.....I don't know, I just don't know what to say, I don't!"), and there are other interesting differences, from the version published by Christian Light Publications in 1969. I'm glad to have read both versions. The story itself is wonderful--and it's true!
Christmas Carol Kauffman is a popular author among Mennonites, or atleast was when I was a girl. All her books are goo, if not tragic and sad. I believe they are all based on true characters. Lucy Winchester was my favorite. I haven't read it in many years. But as a mennonite teen I loved this book. Very tragic though.
Based on a true story, follow a young girl in the early 1900's until her death in 1965 and her search to find Jesus and all the hardships she faces in life to finally one day taste the sweetness of knowing her Savior.
At first i thought this book was too thick and long! But my sisters had read it and they told me they REALLY enjoyed it. Well i read it and i thought it was Really good! It was Really sad but it also gives VERY good lessons. This is one of the BEST books ever! I enjoyed it very much!
I really liked this book! Even though it was really sad, it taught a lot of good lessons about doing nothing outside of the boundaries God has set for you. It shows how easy it is to slowly slip away from God without knowing it, but then how merciful God is, and how He is the the best Comforter for even the worst circumstances and tragedies.
Inherited by my grandma years ago, the copies of the books i have by this author, are among my most treasured possessions! i've read them each several times, and am now passing them on to my children.
I LOVED this book!!! I had already read Hidden Rainbow, Light from Heaven, and Search to Belong by Kauffman, but I think this one is my favorite, next to Hidden Rainbow. The unexpected plot twists are enthralling, and it's amazing to know that this was a true story. And, *SPOILER ALERT COMING* I was also pleased to see that the book took a stand against divorce and remarriage, (remarriage, while your spouse is living, is sin!) just like the Bible teaches. Very few people take Scriptures in their literal meaning today, and this was a great refresher. The preacher who first tells Lucy that remarriage is fine "didn't even open the Bible"...says a lot about where he gets his doctrine from.
In summary, I highly recommend this book and look forward to more Kauffman classics. Happy reading!!!
I cannot even start to explain how much I love this book! This is is one of very few books I have reread. It is most definitely in my top five books!
You know that everyone has a book that gets them INTO reading, well, this one is mine. I read this as a young teenager and a few times after. Haven't read in years, not since getting married or becoming a mother.
Different aspects of the book touched me this time compared to reading it in my teens. I can sympathise with Lucy on different levels.
I just love Christmas Carol Kauffman's writing. Just read this book - the fact it is a true story makes it even more poignant.
I remember reading this many, many years ago and always wanted to read it again. The author brings you back to a time where live was so physically challenging. The heartbreak of losing children and financial difficulties make me really count my blessings for not being born back then. So interesting how even a small spark of faith that came to Lucy as a child carried her through many long years until she was able to finally get involved after years of being squashed by men in her life and she never lost that faith. Her quest was ultimately rewarded. This one is a keeper!
Lucy Winchester is a very touching story. It brings to life the whole concept of life and how tragedy for truth is. I went through all different emotions which there can be while reading this book. It was amazing and full of suspect which made me read on into the night. Thank you so much for the novel.
A very good book. Not my favourite by Kauffman but well worth reading. This was my second time since first reading in 1973. It was interesting how the writing of a novel between then and now is different. It was also a real throwback in time to see how different pastimes were viewed in the church and how that view has changed.
This is one of the saddest, most heartbreaking, yet most powerful stories I have ever read. I just can't fathom the heartache that Lucy went through in her hard life. Tears slid down my cheeks multiple times during the reading of this story. The fact that this is a true story is even more powerful in my eyes. Oh what our God can do.
I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. I usually avoid books with too much tragedy. Somehow CC Kauffman handled the hardships in Lucy's life in a way that didn't leave me bracing myself for the next trial.
I have owned this book for about 35 years and it is one I read about every 5 years.
When I was younger I thought it was tragically heartbreaking. Now I've lived through the loss of two children, cancer 3x, death of friends, my sons' surgeries, and I've learned to appreciate Lucy even more.
The fact that this was a true story gave it a charm it would not have really had otherwise. I don't prefer the writing style of Christmas Carol Kauffman. Lucy had a difficult life and she definitely handled it with grace.
This was a tough book to read, about how this lady put up with an abusive husband who would often beat her up while in a drunken rage. She was to only endure it?
Lucy Winchester is a true story. The cover is deceiving, making Lucy to appear like a Saint, when the entire story is more about her discovering her Christ through a difficult home-life.
This was another good read by Christmas Carol Kauffman. I've read Not Regina before, and this one wasn't as good, but it was a true story which I liked, even though it is rather sad and heavy. It's not one of my favorite Christmas Carol Kauffman books, but it's a good one still.
