Del Cameron is a leader in the world of sport hunting. Over the years he has written for periodicals such as: "Sports Afield," "Outdoor Life," "Fur-Fish-Game," "Full Cry" and "Coonhound Bloodlines."
This book is very niche. If you are sensitive about hunting, I don't recommend picking it up. That's not me trying to hurt your feelings, I'm just trying to save you some heartache. I was raised in a family of houndsmen, so it's all very familiar. The trailing, the dogs in the back of the dog box hitting a scent and released, the infuriating search of those same dogs for days, the excitement of all that work finally paying off. I could see it all and remember it all. Of course, my days in that world came at a time when Del's were at a close, but the sentiment remains. I found it amusing that almost all houndsmen are the same in their claim of best trailing hounds. It's kind of like the country singers trying to boast about who is more country. It doesn't really matter, but that need to compete is ingrained in us, I guess. There is a lot of useful information in this if you want to know how to train a tree hound or recognize animal behavior. You can also just sit by the campfire and listen to the musings of a man talk about his hounds. My great uncle is also listed in this book, and that prized jaguar, well, it is now my jaguar. That was pretty neat.
Call of The Hounds presents an incredible portrait of Del Cameron and his mountain lion and bear hounds. An outstanding houndsman, Cameron was tough as nails, often spending days in the freezing cold of the Rockies with just himself and his hounds. Del was the last of a dying breed of woodsman—a true environmentalist who understood more about the wilderness than most could ever dream. Like him, the hounds he raised over many decades showed the same dauntless determination, intelligence, and grit.
Truth be told, I read this book because I have a hound—the smartest and toughest I’ve ever owned--with bloodlines back to the Cameron hounds. Now I know my hound’s story by knowing Del’s life.
