I can't believe this book got published and then translated for an English publisher of high standing. It just isn't nearly good enough, neither as a food book, not as fiction.

Exceedingly disappointed.

Update 2020: close call, I almost bought this again, entirely forgetting the first sorry experience. Even worse, I would have been buying the copy I already bought and then gave back to the shop. To read it twice is one thing. To buy it twice?!

To sum it up briefly - two guys obsessed with one femme fatale try to win her heart (and outrival each other) with simple yet impeccable dishes of Greek cuisine. Basically - it's a short story with cooking recipes, humorous and light, that ends right before its magic starts to wear off. 3,5 stars.

Looking for jealous love and zealous cooking? Then this is quite possibly the book for you. Athenian writer Andreas Staikos serves up a delightful concoction that pays homage as much to Eros as to the gods of classical Greek cuisine. There isn’t much to the flimsy, frothy plot – two sixth-floor neighbours in Athens, Damocles and Dimitris by name, are both vying for the exclusive attention of a gluttonous femme fatale named Nana. Their weapon of choice is unbounded expertise in the traditional Greek kitchen; whether it is a dish as well-known as Moussaka or as exotic as Sea-Urchin Salad, as commonplace as Meatballs or as exceptional as Magiritsa, these guys know how to stun the senses, how to part the lips (and legs) of their mutual beloved. But pretty soon, suspicion and jealousy set in; as the cooking reaches a higher and higher pitch of ravishing deliciousness, who will win the contest, who will capture Nana’s heart? An unusual love triangle with a zesty culinary twist, there is even a proper cook-off at the very end. Staikos shows off his passion, his knowledge for his native cuisine with detailed recipes at the end of each of the 17 short chapters; anyone looking for an authentic Greek cookbook could do worse than pick up this slight novella! In spite of the possible inherent chauvinism of the story – Nana is not much more than a cipher, a cliché, if truth be told – this book is a smooth and pleasurable read nonetheless.

Ce petit livre de recettes méditerranéennes est le prétexte d'une farce amoureuse entre deux rivaux qui se disputent le cœur d'une coquette. La belle Nana fait tourner en bourrique ses deux soupirants, Dimitris et Damoclès, en leur tenant la dragée haute et les menant par le bout du nez. Lorsque ces derniers réalisent leurs situations respectives, redoutant de faire chou blanc, ils redoublent d'ardeur et d'invention pour mieux captiver l'enjôleuse.

Nos infortunés amoureux se démènent comme de beaux diables pour flatter les papilles et la vanité de leur égérie, à force de papouilles et de veloutés, donnant le meilleur d'eux-même dans une suite de festins somptueux.

Hélas, la belle est d'autant plus difficile qu'ils se donnent de la peine, et ils doivent avaler bien des couleuvres sous le dictamen de ses caprices. Mais elle sait aussi le moyen de les bien les consoler après leur avoir fait bien de la peine, et ranimer cet espoir qu'elle semblait naguère réduire à néant.

Ces derniers sauront-ils devenir plus sages, ou vont-ils s'entêter à subir les rigueurs de l'inconstante, qui, par ses agaceries, promène ses prétendants sur des charbons ardents?

Une comédie légère, pleine de sel et ne manquant pas de piquant, sur les cœurs d’artichauts et toutes les charmantes folies auxquelles les passions nous obligent.

Mul on nõrkus sellistele 'vaheklippidega' raamatutele. Kreeka toit on üks mu lemmikuid, kreeklaste temperamentsus (ja lollus? dramaatilisus?) on alati huvipakkuv.
Miski hoidis mind lugemas (seda pole ammu juhtunud! ehk oli asi selles, et peatükid lühikesed ja font suur-loetav?) ning sain ta paari tunniga läbi.
Ahjaa, alustasin teost suvaliselt, lugesin väsivale Saarale ette.

Обикновено такава книга не би ми харесала, не обичам книги за любовници, изневери, безнравственост и измами. Не обичам чак толкова лошата страна на ежедневието да се прехвърля в литературата, в изкуството. Както не веднъж съм казвала, за мен изкуството е начин да избягаш от материалния свят и да преминеш в този на въображението, мечтите... Но тази книга е друга. Вместо да представя "трагичната реалност на безрадостния живот" както например в романа на Флобер "Мадам Бовари", тук съвременният гръцки драматург Андреас Стайкос подхожда с нескрит сарказъм както към комичната ситуация, (една повърхностна жена, кояо се забавлява да върти на пръста си двама глупави мъже) така и към героите. Нана е лекомислена, играе си с чувствата, за да разнообразява ежедневието си, харесва й да има власт върху мъжете.

Двамата любовници пък, Дамоклис и Димитрис, са наивно влюбени, неориентирани и се подмамват от сладостните лъжи на една сладка жена. Държейки героите си на разстояние, Стайкос, под формата на театрално слово, изследва ситуацията отстрани. Персонажите за обезличени- не се говори за тяхното минало, бъдеще и др., ами те се разкриват само частично, само чрез диалозите. Забавни са терзанията на мъжете, породени хем от потъпкана чест, хем от безплодни чудения как да спечелят наглата Нана. На места има интересни размишления върху проблема, като сериозен социален и личностен проблем: дали истински мъж е този, който се оттегля и търпи поражение, или този, който се бори за това, което иска, приемайки героично ударите на живота? На други пък, се получават парадокси: когато единят любовник разбира, че има и друг, той се чуди дали да не потърси сътрудничеството на съпруга за отстраняването на нежелания, но как може да очаква подкрепа за реабилитирането на морала човекът, който допринася за неговото пропадане? Или пък: да се сърдят ли на ненаситницата, че има двама любовника, да се чувстват ли измамени, и всъщност те ли са измамени или съпругът? Любовниците имат само права, а съпрузите- и задължения!
"Също така не си изложен на опасността тази жена да те "хвана в капана" и да те отведе в най-неприятното за един мъж състояние - брака" ..
Има ли смисъл да се предизвиква развод, да се посвещава съпругът в "тайната", като единственото, което ще се постигне с това е или жената да се покае и да се завърне при семейството си, или да се раздели с мъжа си и да се прехвърли на гърба на любовника?
"А както можеш да допуснеш, една жена обича любовника си, а не мъжа си. Ако обичаше съпруга си, нямаше да има нужда от любовник. А тя обича само любовника, понеже само пред любовника разкрива истинското си аз, само на любовника дарява обновяваща се наслада, докато пред съпруга представя своето повтарящо се досадно делнично аз, като му доставя все по-гаснещи лъжеудоволствия"
Макар че любовта на заблудените Дамоклис и Димитрис изглежда пламенна и истинска, самият факт, че те предпочитат да са само любовници, тъй като хем нямат задължения, хем не им се налага да стават свидетели на ежедневния, еднообразен облик на обожаемата жена, ме навежда на мисълта, че чувствата им са егоистични и по-скоро несериозни, плътски.
Смешно е, че при все че и двамата нямат съмнения относно моралните устои на Нана, продължават да я боготворят и да се опитват да спечелят благоволението й.
По някакъв начин правя паралел с молиеровия Тартюф: пак има измамник, има и изигран, но само дотук. А може би и начина по който авторът предава наивността на едните и хитростта на другата също напомня молиеровия подход в изграждането на персонажи... Както е казано в прекрасното предисловие от Здравка Михайлова, езикът на Стайкос е много повлиян от запада и особено от френската школа.
Интересен е и фактът, че творбата е създадена по искане на френско издаделство, интересуващо се от готварска книга с рецепти от класическата гръцка кухня, поднесени в литературна обвивка. Аз лично не разглеждам творбата откъм гастрономическата страна. Все още не мога да възприема готварството като екзистенциален проблем, нито храната да е въздигната от основен инстинкт до морален фактор.
Леко и забавно четиво, представящо актуален проблем под формата на комедия и съчетано с вкусови наслади и добри рецепти!

Volgens de boekomslag te vergelijken met 'Rode rozen en tortilla's' van Laura Esquivel: ik denk het niet (op de melige titel na misschien). Waar dat boek nog vol was van dat charmante magisch-realistische van de Latijns-Amerikaanse literatuur en de recepten op ingenieuze manier verweven waren met de plot, is hier niets origineels te vinden. Ik was blij dat het uit was, en dat wil wat zeggen voor een boek van 130 pagina's - met 1/5 gevuld aan recepten.
En de vrouw van dienst: wat een onmogelijk mens. Ik zou haar zo in een kookpot gedraaid hebben.

"Herkullisia suhteita" on viihdyttävä pikku tarina ruokaan kietoutuvasta kolmio- tai oikeammin neliödraamasta. Kreikkalaiset naapurimiehet, joitten nimet menivät minulta lukiessa koko ajan sekaisin, jakavat paitsi suuren innostuksen ruoanlaittoon myös saman rakastajattaren. Lukija saa herkutella sekä naapureitten omalaatuiseksi muodostuvalla suhteella että ruoilla, joitten reseptit esitetään kertomuksen lomassa. Aika kutkuttava tekstilaji tämä ruokafiktio!

Nyt kävi niin, etten taida olla ihan kirjan kohderyhmää, en nimittäin jaksanut yhtään keskittyä tässä pienoisromaanissa oleviin resepteihin, joita on runsaasti ja jotka lienevät tämän teoksen se varsinainen juttu. Onhan tässä toki myös tarina: ihana Nana, jonka kaksi rakastajaa kilpailevat naisen suosiosta ruuan avulla. Mutta löytyykö vihdoin se resepti, jolla saa Nanan omakseen?

Mano pažintis su Šiuolaikiniu Europos romanu perskaičius graikų autoriaus "Pavojingą kulinariją" labai pavykusi. Nana kaip šiltą vilną aplink pirštą suka savo du meilužius. Negana to, knygoje daug graikiškos virtuvės receptų. Įdomi istorija. Verta perskaityt. Labai labai originaliai pateikiama. Moters paveikslas superinis.

This little novella is actually a cookbook. In 17 chapters we witness Dimitri's and Damocles' attempts at winning Nana by taking turns in cooking delicious meals for her. While the plot is rather predictable right from the start and the characters merely flat, stereotypical and thus rather dull, the best part about the book are the recipes ranging from stuffed vine leaves, Magiritsa, Moussaka and chicken with okra to different recipes for stew, meat balls and salads.

Kitabi okurken hep ayni seyi hissettim: bu kitabin tiyatro oyunu ya da sinema filmi olsa ne keyifli olurdu! Hatta bazi karakterlere zihnimde oyuncular bile belirledim. Nitekim ogrendim ki yazarimiz "tiyatro temelli" imis 😊 icindeki tarifleri de hesaba katarsak o kadar da acimasiz elestirileri hak etmiyor bence.

According to the excerpt of the Dutch edition, this is supposed to be “Een begeerlijke roman waarin overheerlijke recepten zijn verwerkt in een sensueel verhaal over geheime liefdes”(A desirable novel where delicious recipes are included in a sensual story about secret loves). Well, it's none of these, in my opinion. Not even the recipes were interesting enough to wet my appetite (and I like to cook...), as I've seen better.

I was glad the book only had 140 pages, because otherwise I doubt if I'd been able to finish it. The Dutch translation is, together with Dutch translations of Like Water for Chocolate and Elephants in my orchard, also included in an omnibus called Verleiding, but I'm ever so glad I never tried to get hold of these other two, no matter how popular all of these books might be with some readers. Just not my thing, I guess.
