About the author

James Otis Kaler was an American journalist and author of children’s literature, primarily in the boys' adventure genre. The vast majority of his works were published under the name James Otis, but he also wrote as Amy Prentice, Harry Prentice, and Lt. James K. Orton.

His works include the Boy Spies series, the Navy Boys series, the Minute Boys series, a number of historical novels published by the American Book Company, and more than thirty novels about life in New York State.

This book was published in 1896. I acquired an old hardback copy and found it to be an easy read. Otis was one of my favorite authors from my childhood. He is best remembered for his 1881 novel Toby Tyler.
Wrecked on Spider Island is an adventure tale about three youths who are marooned on a small island in the Florida Keys. They attempt to refloat a wrecked boat, knowing that they are well away from the regular shipping lanes. They find an ancient wreck with boxes of gold and silver coins which bring them problems with thieves when they finally do get their schooner in working order and sail it into the port of Havana.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it for anyone interested in tales of the sea.
