Sherrie Daly, the former wife of PGA tour superstar John Daly, takes a swing at the controversial man they call “Wild Thing” in this jaw-dropping memoir about what really goes on behind the scenes of professional golf. Golf’s wholesome reputation is not what it used to be, thanks to Tiger Woods. But Woods’s bad boy scorecard doesn’t even compare to that of the sport’s original John Daly. Sherrie Daly should know. She was married to him for nine years. It’s no secret that John, one of the PGA tour’s most popular stars, is known for his erratic behavior and on-the-edge lifestyle as much as for his powerful, grip-it-and-rip-it style on the green. But the never-ending carousel of free-flowing cash, booze, and women seduces many of the sport’s big-time swingers. In this juicy tell-all, Sherrie takes readers into the clubhouse to expose the seedy side of the gentleman’s game. She dishes on John’s out-of-control antics throughout their marriage, many of which she helped cover up to protect his career, and his self-destructive addictions to whiskey, sex, and gambling, which led him to lose one of his biggest purses ever—nearly one million dollars—in an hour. She writes candidly about the physical and emotional abuse she endured and why she continued to play the role of golf wife despite the trashed hotel rooms, wrecked homes, and demolished cars. Then she turns the tables on herself, sharing the truth behind her catfights with his girlfriends, her legal troubles, and especially the night John alleged she attacked him with a steak knife. Behind the polite clapping, collared shirts, and hushed voices, golf is just like any other professional sport, with groupies, party-crazed athletes, and blatant infidelity. After years in the exclusive players’ wives club, Sherrie Daly is Teed Off and ready to rip the game’s well-groomed faÇade to shreds.
Do not, REPEAT do not waste your time. Mrs Daly obviously has written more books (1) than she has read. It is 200+ pages of her shopping, drinking, and redneck bashing the same story over and over. The part where she needed legal advise and called and spoke to Bill Clinton without having his phone number is mind boggling Her claim that she knows how to get anyone's number is testament to her stupidity.
Teed Off: My Life as a Player's Wife on the PGA Tour by Sherrie Daly (Gallery Books 2011)(Biography). The author knowingly married probably the worst active and practicing alcoholic on the PGA tour who is also a serial groom. When the author mentioned that when she went on tour with her new husband she started drinking mimosas early in the day with one of her running buddies, I thought, "This can't end well." In fact it didn't. Although barely mentioned in the book, this wife (the author) was arrested several times for her actions while drunk during this marriage, and she was convicted and did time in prison for drug trafficking. Who exactly does she think is the aggrieved party in this marriage? Hint: It's not Sherrie Daly. My rating: 4/10, finished 7/21/11.
This was an interesting read offering the perspective of Mrs. John Daly. Seeing how much of the PGA golf world was somewhat insulated until the Tiger Woods scandal broke, this book offered insight into the world that accompanies this lifestyle. I knew little about the Dalys prior to reading this book, but I imagine much of this tale would parallel many of the PGA families.
Interesting perspective on an otherwise closed off world. Lost respect for John Daly if what his exwife says is true...
This might be one of the more unnecessary memoirs I have read; most anybody who knows John Daly the golf pro is going to know of his antics on and off the links. That said, I did enjoy the dirt-slinging, and there is plenty. One drawback is the author's apparent cluelessness as to what is and is not a hardship in today's America. But if you like a good dose of "your shit is worse than my shit," this book might make you feel a little less shitty.
read it on a recommendation from a friend. no 1/2 stars, huh? light easy 2-hour read, crazy stories, but like those following the PGA Tour didn't know that about John Daly? and as a 4th wife, was she really surprised it didn't work out? a very little peek behind the curtain of the tour, but for real reading, I'd read one of Rick Reilly's books...
I always felt bad for John daly and cheered him on when he was the underdog. Did not realize what a sleezebag he is! In the process of making him look bad. Did she realize how bad she made herself look? For those of us who work hard for our money I found their lifestyle very offensive. So teed off really got me teed off! Boo hoo hoo Sherrie you deserved each other
