I'm a stay at home mom with three kids, a dog and an active imagination. I spent the first 34 years of my life in Alaska, land of the midnight sun, but these days I'm located in Washington, and am enjoying a much warmer sun :) I'm married to my high school sweetheart, John, who is known to bring me flowers "just because".
My leisure time is filled with gardening, crochet, knitting, sewing, art and reading.
I loved it - I'm a SFR fan and this did not disappoint. It is an excellent ending to a series I've really enjoyed - it has the same appeal as the two previous books. It has the same strong heroine/enigmatic [but determined] hero matchup with the requisite fireworks but with more than enough differences to make them stand out in your mind.
The heroine is the middle Harrisdaughter, Brandy - referred to in No Words Alone, and a major supporting character in When Sparks Fly. The hero is Azor, another major supporting character from When Sparks Fly. He is also a shape-shifter and cop who uses his abilities as part his undercover work.
The world-building for the series is dense and consistent with a strong plot that kept me going. Brandy has become involved in another scandal and is [eventually] talked into going to visit sister Xera who is married to an alien [No Words Alone] 8 months away. But there are things she doesn't know. Like she's being targeted by a shape-shifting assassin, like she's been fed psychotropic drugs which are giving her hallucinations, like she's being escorted by Azor who seems bent on marrying her [and doesn't mind seducing her to get her agreement], like the infection that is killing her...
Sparks Series No Words Alone (2008) When Sparks Fly (2009) Solar Flare [ebook available from Smashwords and Amazon]
Excellent read. Characters well developed and plot was well developed. Enjoyed the style of writing. Held my interest with strong female characters. Had some twists and turns that were not expected. Azor and Brandy set a realistic stage and played out the plot with style and humor. I would recommend this book and the series to readers of futuristic and fantasy. I really liked the book cover.
Brandy is a bit of a spitfire. I did find her a bit annoying since everything was her way or she whines. I liked Azor's calm. Though the sharpshooter assassin is sent to finish her, the story seemed to leave a few unanswered questions about what her Dr did.
I have to say I read this series slightly out of context. I started with book 2, read 3 and am now reading book 1. The story about the Harris-d sisters is quite alluring and the author definitely writes a hot story. I really enjoyed the predecessor to this book, because it was witty, romantic, believable and still emotionally and politically tangling and enticing. Unfortunately I can't say the same for this book. Book 3 was coming along quite good story-wise until it hit a point midstory that turned everything. The characters progress stunted, the romantic situation was really awkward and unsatisfying. Brandy seemed shallow, confused and unsure. Azor, formerly really passive, turned alpha and possessive. The whole situation was clearly what the author wanted, but left unexplained until the very end. It didn't come out how the whole shapeshifting race actually was really possessive, loving and protective (except for a few sentences that explained all and nothing). The race wasn't clearly described and the whole situation with *spoilers from here on* Brandy being a half-shapeshifter herself was just rushed, unexplained and undeveloped. I actually read the words and thought: "Huh, that's why her hair changed color, but what does it mean for her and for them?" and left hanging.
Also, there were a few story strings that didn't quite come together. They didn't fit or felt as if the author tried to make them stick with sticky glue but nothing else. The explanations were half-hearted and felt unfinished.
What I normally don__t mention because I__m not really in the position to do so myself (being as I__m not native to the language) are mistakes. All the spelling mistakes, missing words and grammatical errors were really tiring. After finding over 6 mistakes in fewer than 10 pages I started to roll my eyes whenever I found a new one. And those were the really obvious ones. Sometimes I had the feeling the author started to write a sentence one way but finished it slightly different then she had in mind at first. It showed...a lot. It was one of the most badly edited stories I have read so far.
Some story strings were unfinished and the whole situation with the family, the past and the future felt unconnected. What actually really galled me was that we didn't hear a lot of all the previously introduced characters from the other books and the whole situation with the ongoing war between GE, Scorpio and the Khun'tat. The author explained the GE away with maybe half a page, mentioning that they were defeated and dissolved. The Khun'tat where only mentioned in the context of the travel arrangements and it being dangerous, but nothing more. Also, the author mentioned Ryven's Brother's marriage, but nothing about the bride and the other family members (what happened with that girl Xera rescued in book 2 from her isolation?). I'd have loved to read more about how the life continued for all of them. Sadly, the story from this book and the previous books just didn__t come together.
This story was so good. I love how it revisited the characters of No Words Alone, though this book had a totally different tone and feel to it than the first book in the series. I thought Azor was a complex and unique hero - sexy too - and even Brandy's temper worked for me. There was just one overwhelming problem that kept this from being a 4 or 5 for me. Bad editing!
I hate to harp on editing issues, but there is a serious problem when words are missing or incorrect in sentences on almost every single page of the book. I kept having to stop, reread, and interpret what the sentences were supposed to say. In case anyone thinks I'm exaggerating or being too harsh, let me give a couple of examples. On the very first page of the whole book, the first sentence of the second paragraph starts, "She was tired and the old breaks her bones ached." I assume her old broken bones ached. Most of the errors were like this, but some were much worse. For example, halfway through the book is the sentence, "His eyes smiled his menu." Huh? I still haven't a clue what the author was trying to say there. I'd like to think these problems are the result of a formatting error - something lost in transition. Even a quick self-edit should have turned up most of the hundreds of mistakes throughout the book, though.
It just pains me to see such an excellent story dragged down by what should have been an easy fix. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely. But go into it knowing you're not going to get a well-edited piece.
This was a good ending to the trilogy. Brandy is, however, a heroine you periodically want to smack for being difficult for no good reason. She's grumpy. Azor is the perfect balance for her though, and it's a pleasant reminder that even the grumpy ones (like myself) have a match out there for them who is willing to take the time to see past the prickly exterior.
I loved that this book revisited the characters from No Words Alone. It was by far my favorite out of the three books. This one is a worthy ending, though, and Azor is smoking hot despite being green. I highly recommend the book.
A good ending to the trilogy. No Words Alone (Xera's book) is still my favorite, and on my keeper shelf, but this was next favorite book. As heroines go, I didn't want to like her but she was dealing with a lot of emotional baggage and I ended up sympathizing with her in the end. A true alpha hero and a lovely "courtship" kept me reading until I had finished this in one sitting. Just a few minor story details kept this from a full 4 stars. 3.75 stars/B+
i like'd the ending but once more didn't realize i skipped a book i read the first one and this one was the third one uhhh i hate when that happens so i'll go to bn.com and get the second one
Overall it was a good ending to the series. I didn't care for Brandy that much, she certainly did not make it easy for Azor and I felt like smacking her a time or two.
Was a good wrap up to the series. Want to read about some of the supporting characters in this series though so hopefully something is coming for those:)
I really enjoyed the follow-up and am hoping for another glimpse. Maybe the rest of the story will play out over several books as I loved the writer and their characters
