If you are looking for a well-written western novel, this is it! The author demonstrates an ability to tell a store at a leisurely, but never slow pace while getting details of the weapons, customs, laws, and history all correct. The story is about realistic people, not melodramatic overdrawn characters. It isn't about gunslingers, but about small ranchers living on the edge of legitimate operations that tease the line of rustling cattle. They are up against wealthier ranchers and a cattleman's association that has tried to deny the the right to vote and participate in organized activities. They are dealing with companions who skirt the law and attempting to follow the unwritten code of the west.

The author attempts to create the feel of the period, even using ---- in the middle of strong language as books written in that period might have done. The ebb and flow of the language recreates the speech patterns of older English. The author throws out proper idioms and western slang as an expert marksman peppers the center of a paper target.

Finally, the author brings about a really powerful and unexpected, yet completely believable and realistic conclusion. Many stories in the old west might've ended in this same manner.

The novel is not named for the condition of someone's firearms, but is the nickname of Russell Irons, whose younger brother narrates.

A fine western novel with only a very minor flaw that I won't describe here. Well written and executed with what I believe to be perfect pacing and calculated flavor.
