Mary and her husband were born and raised in the Amish lifestyle and traditions in which they lived for 26 years. After living in fear of eternity, and experiencing many broken family ties and friendships, she now tells others how to find a lasting peace, joy and freedom in the Lord. With a compassion for her people, Mary shares the true story of her family's traumatic journey to the Truth.
Mary grew up in an Old Order Amish community of devotion, peace, and simplicity. Now, excommunicated from her Amish family, she beautifully depicts life within the Amish culture in her autobiography and her upcoming novel.
I enjoyed this book. Schrock’s memoir is both interesting and uplifting. The author clearly explains how she and her husband came to faith and why they chose to leave the Amish church. She includes explanations of some customs and differences between Amish communities. Unlike many who leave an oppressive religious or family culture, she is able to both see truth and extend every grace to those she left behind. The writing style is somewhat elementary, but I think that both authenticates the author and doesn’t detract in any way from her story or purpose.
This book is very helpful in understanding the Amish people. I lived in an Amish community for a year and near another one for 5 years (but was not Amish) and I did not understand why they did and didn't do so many things. I wish I had read this book then! The book is easy and enjoyable to read.
The first part of this book describing Mary Schrock I found more interesting than the second part. In the second part she and her husband leave the Amish and join the Baptist Church. Here she puts in many Bible verses to back up their reasons for leaving. Mainly the Amish Ordnung is what they object to. Their families are upset at their leaving and try to prevent them for fear of breaking their family apart. I believe your spirituality is within you and you need no one to tell you how to believe. The Amish Ordnung telling members how to dress and how to believe does seem to me excessive. At the same time, I can see it is designed to keep their people together and apart from the world.
