Andy Pankhurst studied and taught at the Slade School of Fine Art. He is a figurative painter with work represented in various public, corporate and private collections and museums in the UK and USA.
Nice look at some "great" art pieces of the world, with interesting explanations as to how they came about etc. One thing I noticed - out of all the artists featured, 1 was a woman, and maybe 2 were not white. Would've given one more star had there been representation, bc I did enjoy the book and it was very well organized.
A lovely little book that pairs 80 diverse paintings and a few statues with 80 pages of informative text about these masterpieces. The 80 works of art are allocated to 10 themes and are analyzed from that perspective, which leads to some interesting groupings and viewpoints. I enjoyed this little book and can recommend it to my fellow dabblers.
This book presents a selection of great artworks, along with a brief explanation.
I found most of these images captivating, some of the explanations were reasonable but they were all a bit brief and I felt that none of them really explained what made the artwork stand out.
I’ve had this book for a year I think, maybe a year and a half, and since I’ve had it I’ve flicked through and read specific pages that peaked my interest. I also found it very useful in finding artists for college work, as the range of different movements and mediums within the book is very diverse, as all artists within the book are famous and well recorded making them ideal to research further. But it has only been in the past few months that I have been sitting down and reading the book from beginning to end, and it’s been very enjoyable. Whilst it’s not a book I would ever read in such a linear way again, I’m happy that I did once because I was able to engage with pieces more after finding out their contexts - pieces that I otherwise might’ve missed when flicking through. The main downside to the book is it’s lack of diversity regarding the race and gender of its artists (though I believe this is addressed in the introduction) but this is obviously understandable as most famous artists are white men, as these are the people with most freedom within society to produce art and profit off of this, especially within the west.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the introduction written by the two authors, the compilation/ curation of images left a lot to be desired. I felt as though the greats were not well represented, and if included, their main works were not selected, cast aside in favor of lesser, and poorer works. Ultimately there were maybe five to ten I thought fit the criteria set by the authors and only two that I truly enjoyed. I was hoping for more, and I was hoping for a collection of works that I might have enjoyed from the different periods, but unfortunately, that was not the case.
Fantastic Booklet for a jump start into world of painting. Book examines 80 master pieces in terms of 10 themes. - Expression - Beauty - Narrative - Drama - Erotic - Realism - Form - Movement - Distortion - Symbolism
and each theme is examined in eight areas. In each area a master piece from the history of painting is examined. And also further references to a few more paintings are given in that area.
It is a great introduction to how to look at a painting, and comcepts, challanges on the world and history of painting; it is direct to the point.
The organization of the book was whimsical, moving between deep art theory and what seemed like personal preference of the author's. I quite liked that approach. A quick guide that will move you through dozens and dozens of artistic works with little bursts of information on each work. I ended up learning more about several of them after reading this book and seeking out larger versions to study. Very satisfying read.
Basically like a mini art gallery? 80 pictures with an interesting snippet of information. Felt this was a good level of information for a person like me with 0.1 art knowledge.
1. The art featured here is mainly western art produced by men after the renaissance. 2. A good introduction for someone just starting to indulge their curiosity about art.
I didn’t love every piece, although I do enjoy most of them, but I appreciated how the book was organized. I was familiar with many works and liked that there was a mix of familiar and novel.
This book is a very brief survey of various types of art. The book is organized by different topics such as narrative art, etc. The book is very concise, and while I enjoyed the actual art pieces, the information was so brief that I didn't learn a lot. In addition, some of the paintings are vertical, which means I had to rotate the book while reading it!
Book is divided into themes rather than eras. Without a doubt, the narrative theme was my favorite. I'm a writer; I like stories regardless of the way they're told.
uma ótima imersão na arte ao redor do mundo e ao redor da história. textos curtos e super informativos, adentrando a obra e o conceito apresentado em cada página. incrível!
Got on my bike today and decided to treat myself. Of all the shops which one will be easy to treat myself to a gift? Easy ....The Bookstore of course. As someone who loves to look at art but not knowing much about it, I think is what the authors had in mind for their intended target. One thing I did discover is that apparently even though the cover is art work of Vermeer thee is none of his work discussed in this book which sucks because I do know he was well known because he was so good at painting the lights.
