Heureka is a manga set in antiquity, during the Second Punic War between the small city state of Syracuse and the Roman Empire. The comic is based around the life and times of the famous mathematician Archimedes. Archimedes was not only a gifted mathematician but also an engineer of repute. During the conflict with the Romans, Archimedes was supposedly responsible for creating a number of war machines that devastated the Roman legions before they eventually got the upper hand. The exact nature and use of these devices is controversial, and exists more in the realm of legend than actual historical fact.

Hitoshi Iwaaki (Japanese: 岩明均 Hepburn: Iwaaki Hitoshi, born July 28, 1960) is a Japanese manga artist, whose works include the science-fiction/horror series Parasyte. The Mixx editions of Parasyte romanize his name as "Hitosi Iwaaki", while the Del Rey Manga editions use "Hitoshi Iwaaki".

In 1993, he received the Kodansha Manga Award for Parasyte. He was a finalist for the 2005 Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Grand Prize for Historie. In 2010 Historie took the grand prize in the manga division of the 2010 Japan Media Arts Festival.

Dans l’ensemble, c’est un assez bon manga. Le récit est intéressant mais le dessin laisse parfois à désirer (les traits des personnages sont un peu simples et les arrière-plans minimalistes, sauf pour quelques scènes panoramiques) mais c’est assez bien pour être tout de même agréable à l’oeil. La fluidité du récit fait parfois défaut avec un enchainement de scènes un peu confus (des fois je me demandais si des pages ou des cases n’avaient pas été inversé par erreur). Le fait d’avoir travaillé sur des mangas d’horreur donne à Iwaaki l’avantage pour illustrer les scène de batailles sanglantes.

C’est bien sûr un manga historique mais il faut comprendre que le récit est largement romancé et que seuls les événements les plus importants soient véridiques. Il est, en effet, peu probable qu’Archimède ait utilisé des miroirs pour brûler la flotte romaine alors que l’historien Tite-Live ne fait mention que de sa contribution à l’architecture défensive et aux machines de guerres — qui n’étaient certainement pas aussi spectaculaires et sanglantes que le récit laisse croire (mais Archimède reste tout de même un génie en physique (hydrostatique) et en mathématique (géométrie) et il serait même possiblement l’inventeur du mécanisme d’Anticythère!).

Un bon manga pour les amateurs d’histoire romaine!

C’était pas mal. N’étant qu’une novice au sujet des guerres puniques j’ai trouvé dans ce manga quelques éléments éclairants. Le dessin m’a beaucoup plu, les scènes de combat restituent bien la violence des différentes batailles. En revanche, l’histoire est un peu classique et on ne s’attache pas trop aux protagonistes suivis, dont les contours sont trop flous. Reste le personnage d’Archimède.

เรื่องราวอิงประวัติศาสตร์ของ “อาร์คิมิดีส” เจ้าของตำนานแห่งวลี “ยูเรก้า!” อันโด่งดัง แต่ก็อย่างที่รู้กันว่าประวัติของอาร์คิมิดีสนั้นไม่ได้บันทึกเป็นรายลักษณ์อักษร มีแต่เพียงเรื่องเล่าต่อกันมา มังงะเรื่องนี้ก็เอาเรื่องเล่าเหล่านั้นมาดำเนินเรื่อง โดยที่ตัวละครหลักไม่ใช่ตัวของอาร์คิมิดีสเอง และเล่าเพียงช่วงเวลาช่วงสุดท้ายก่อนเสียชีวิตของอาร์คิมิดีสในช่วงการล้อมซีราคิวส์ (ราว 214-212 ปีก่อนคริสตกาล) และพูดถึงสิ่งประดิษฐ์และผลงานของอาร์คิมิดีสเพียงแค่ผิวเผินเท่านั้น แต่ก็ยังอ่านได้สนุกอยู่ล่ะนะ

Another great work by Hitoshi Iwaaki and similar to his other manga's - historical stuff dealing in military as well as usage of science and strategy in warfare.

This time around we get to know about the mathematician Archimedes (Eureka) and his contributions to science. The period is the Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage. Loved the way his invitations used in warfare and goggled it to find it's based on legends and not just the imagination of the author.

The Art is very good - clean and clear

The only disappointment is it's too short,the characters are not developed, its just a fast read on history.

Apakah mesin-mesin perang yang diciptakan Archimedes pada 200 SM untuk pertahanan benteng Syracuse memang secanggih yang digambarkan Iwaaki-sensei? Dengan adanya mesin yang digerakkan uap, berarti dua ribu tahun lebih dulu daripada James Watt. Kontroversial atau tidak, kita takkan pernah tahu karena reruntuhan benteng tidak menyisakan bukti, hanya legenda. Tapi bukankah sebagian besar discovery memang merupakan rediscovery?
