Suicide Bridge –a name which evokes darkness and fear. Some say this iron bridge is the most haunted place in all of Gettysburg. Sachs Covered Bridge crosses nearby Marsh Creek, where stories of disembodied floating heads and the spectres of hanged soldiers draw ghost hunters nightly. Are the two structures connected?
Employing a combination of historical research, witness interviews, and boots-on-the-ground firsthand experience, Timothy Renner unearths both the history and the legends associated with the two bridges. The stories he uncovers cause him to question what might be haunting the area... and the very nature of ghosts.
Something eerie is happening on these bridges. It may be stranger than the legends suggest.
"Renner may literally be on of the best in the country at the highly specialized technique of taking one single, small stretch of earth and wringing out of it a staggering amount of legends, history, eyewitness accounts, and firsthand testimony." – Joshua Cutchin
Timothy Renner has written articles for several publications including "Morbid Curiosity", "Weird USA", and "Weird Pennsylvania". His illustrations have appeared in fanzines, comics, magazines, books, and on many record covers. Timothy plays and sings folk music with his band Stone Breath. To date they have released twelve full length albums and multiple EPs. Beyond the Seventh Gate is his first book.
This book surrounds the author and his friend investigating the haunted claims of several bridges near Gettysburg. Timothy takes care to research and include all the factual information regarding each respective bridge's history, but does not discount people's experiences at "Suicide Bridge" despite there being no evidence of any suicides taking place there. He includes intriguing personal theories on the nature of ghosts, hauntings, and paranormal experiences.
The book is short and compelling enough to finish in one dark evening. Timothy's artwork (that graces nearly every page) is absolutely beautiful, and worth the purchase of the book alone for it's inclusion. He has also created an innovative multi-media version of the book that combines audiobook reading of the text, original music, and recordings from his visits to the haunted bridges, which is included with purchase of the book.
As someone who has always been enchanted with "the unknown," I am constantly on the lookout for books that don't just include your typical ghost stories. And after a recent trip to the described area, where someone directed me to the bridge in question, I knew I had to do some research. This book was the absolute perfect place to begin and end. With inclusive stories and documentation, Mr. Renner does a wonderful job looking at both sides, putting pieces together and leaving just enough open for the reader to make up their own minds. I cannot wait to read more by this author and also check out their podcast!
