The Matheson Brothers #1

Highlander's Desire

Rate this book

New York Times Bestselling Author Joanne Wadsworth brings you another tantalizing Highlander time travel series you shouldn't miss. Readers are loving it!

There can be only one...for both of them.

In the twelfth century, a man named Gilleoin was gifted with the ability to shift into a bear. His clan was called Matheson, and when he mated with a woman carrying faerie blood, they created a line shrouded in secrecy, yet still, far into the future, whispers would abound... For five long years, Isla Matheson has run from the one man her fae ancestor prophesized would be hers, but now her time for running is done. Her shifter mate is closing in and when he captures her and takes her home to his clan, she can no longer deny either of them. She chooses to merge with him in all ways, and in doing so sets a twelfth century prophecy in motion, one that sends her hurtling back through time to when their clan first began. Highland warrior shifter Iain Matheson has fallen under his mate's spell. She's the one woman he would die to protect, and when a portal opens and takes her from him, he dives in after her. He'll never allow her to escape him, not even when he becomes embroiled in one of the greatest feuds raging at that time. Now they have a mission, to save their future line from extinction, to give hope to their people, both in the future and the past. Each book in this series is standalone, and can be enjoyed out of sequence.THE MATHESON BROTHERS SERIESHighlander's Desire, #1Highlander's Passion, #2Highlander's Seduction, #3

i was hoping to read an excellent adventure, but all I got was B-rated sex scenes for 70% of the book, like there isn't anything more to a relationship then that. very disappointed. i will not be reading the rest of the series.

Loved this book!

Isla and Iain , have been destined to be mates. But she ran from her destiny until the gorgeous and muscular bear shifter caught up with her. This is a great time travel storyline, filled with hot love scenes and action packed. She is gifted with the gift to compel. Mystery and suspense in this book and I definitely enjoyed it and the many characters.

(RabidReads.com)3.5/5 stars.Bear Shifters. Prophesy’s. Time travel to the twelfth century. Romance. Scotland. If any of that interests you, this just might be a book for you. It’s not a perfect book, has some rough patches here and there, but all in all, not a bad read.

Isla Matheson knows time is running out for her. For five years, she has been running from her true mate. She knows he is close to finding her and it’s the full moon. Not that they need a moon to shift, but it’s when he has the best chance to find her. But she’s an investigator(and daughter of the chief of her pack) for her pack, and two rogue killer bear shifters need to be caught before they kill again. So full moon or not, she and her best friend’s husband, Daniel, have to go hunting. Iain Matheson knows his chosen one is near, and he’s determined to find her. He’s the son of the chief of his clan, the other Matheson clan in Scotland. Both are part of a prophesy from the 1100’s, one that Isla isn’t too happy with in particular. The two clans are completely separate and hidden from one another due to the prophesy. When Isla and Daniel’s hunt takes the two near the other clans territory, all bets are off.

I liked both of the main characters of Isla and Iain. Isla is feisty and strong, and of course Iain is both strong and alpha. He is also very determined to make Isla his. Daniel was a good character, and is happily married with a baby. Too bad, as it would have been interesting to see him find his chosen one too. Iain is a triplet and his brothers are both involved a bit in this story, as well as being the two who the next two books are about.

There is some world building, and that’s always a good thing in any sort of paranormal book. Chosen mates are able to feel each other during the new moon. It’s a deep bond and one that will draw them both together. That Isla has been able to hide for so long is testament to her stubbornness and her unwillingness to leave her father behind to fulfill the prophesy. Her father that raised her after his chosen mate died a week after giving birth to Isla. He overcame the loss of his mate just for her, so she doesn’t want to leave him alone. I am not going to tell the details of the prophesy and will leave that to the reader to find out.

I did have some problems with this book however. The dialogue on many occasions is pretty cheesy, and I really am not a fan of over the top flowery dialogue between a couple. Also, at times the scene would be taking place in modern times, and they would still sound a bit like they were in the twelfth century. The book does jump back in forth from the 1100’s to the now. I didn’t have a problem with that, but the dialogue should fit the times. My biggest problem was with the amount of the sex scenes. I really don’t mind a good sex scene, or even several, and expect it in a paranormal romance, but when it starts taking over a good bit of the story, then I have problem with it.

I liked the shifter parts, the prophesy, the time travel, the romance, and the characters. I just wish the book had relied more on actual story and less on the sexy times. Since the other two brothers have to go even farther away to find their mates, I might be trying one of their stories at some point to see how that goes.

Recommended to adult paranormal romance readers.

This is one of the most repetitive pieces of fiction writing I've encountered since I started reviewing books. No, I don't say that lightly.

The prologue is an exposition dump through dialogue of everything the blurb already told me: bear shifters, prophecy, time travel, fated matings. Everything is laid out so clearly I felt an instant lack of trust that I, as a reader, had the intelligence to connect any dots on my own.

The first chapter jumps forward a thousand years to the present day and tells it all to me again, through two different characters talking to each other about stuff that one or both of them already know AND ALSO I ALREADY KNOW IT TOO, IT WAS JUST IN THE PROLOGUE.

As the story goes on, this extends down to the smallest details as well as the main plot. When Iain gets dressed I'm treated to a complete list of his clothing, so I know he's wearing black leather pants and a "silver-threaded" cotton tee shirt; when Isla meets up with him later (after a scene break) she has to observe what he's wearing and tell us again that he's wearing black leather pants and a silver cotton shirt. It was only two pages ago! I haven't forgotten!

Iain and Isla's dialogue is so repetitive, and so oddly formal, that for me it whizzed through "bad" right back around to "good" by way of being hilarious. Like, these two horny bear shifters are rubbing their bodies together to bathe in each other's scent, letting those animal instincts out, but they're being super-precious verbally about feelings and boundaries and consent. I laughed so hard, and I know I wasn't supposed to be laughing. This is honestly the reason I bothered finished the "novel"--which at 150 pages is a glorified novella. If an editor had stripped out the repetition I doubt this has enough story to break 100 pages.

I'm so, so glad that I got this for free on a whim. I actually have one of the later books as well, acquired the same way, but I don't feel bad at all about ditching it unread. This was, quite literally, laughably bad writing.

UGH! Can't seem to find a good book lately.

Truth to tell, I thought most of the conversations were kind of ridiculous. Iain and Isla’s talks were just too much, to teenager-ish, too immature. And I thought her taking off after she and Iain woke up was really stupid since Iain called her and she and Daniel told him where they were. What was the point in that? Yeah, I can’t see myself moving forward with this series.

So, I took a moment to look at this author’s other books and found that I had read 2 of them in 2014 AND gave one of them 2 stars and the other 3 stars. I skimmed a lot just to get to the end and I can see myself doing the same to this one. I’m really done with this author now.

One reviewer said the sex was” mild” in this book. Umm. NO! Mild is some touchy-feely stuff. I don’t think his male part being in her mouth and him doing the same thing to her is “mild sex,” do you? And his c#ck was mentioned 24 times in this short read. As much as I like sex in my books you really can’t have one sex scene after another without losing the plot of the story.

For all of you who want a lot of explicit sex but absolutely NO swearing, this book is for you. BUT, this author isn’t for me.

This was a really good start to the new Matheson Brother's series, and I enjoyed it a lot.
I found the story to be really well laid out as the beginning we meet the Matheson's in the past and it explains to us the early Fae prophesy which helps a lot.
Then the story jumps to the present and commences from there. I can't say too much as I don't want to spoilt the story to much. But Isla Matheson has been running from a man her ancestors have prophesized would be her mate. She's not sure she's ready for him yet, but when they do meet, she can't resist and sparks fly, the pages really heat up then. This starts the prophesy in motion and they are sent back in time to the twelfth century. Which starts a new adventure for them all.

I can see this is going to be an interesting and exciting series, the storyline is full of mystery and hot romance. I liked the characters, and look forward to getting to know them better as series progress'. I look forward to reading Finlay and Kirk's stories. And I hope to see a little action in later books.

Iain Matheson, a bear shifter, is tracking his fated mate. She has runaway from him for five years. Luck is on his side and he finds her. Their bond is part of a prophecy and their coupling will make it all come true. Isla Matheson is drawn to Iain but she won't leave her father. Are they ready for the chain of events over which they have no control? What happens next is magical! Iain and Isla are perfect match for each other. I love these characters. They are both powerful shifters and determined to protect the innocent. With her fiery nature, she will stand up to her shifter mate while he, in turn, won't let her risk her life. He's an amazing hero. I liked meeting Iain's brothers. They will soon have their own HEA. The setting is beautiful and rugged just like these two lovers. The dialogue is humorous and flirty. Highlander's Desire is the first book In The Matheson Brothers series. I'm looking forward to reading both Finlay and Kirk's story. Joanne Wadsworth makes these Highlanders come to life. She's a must buy author for me.

Highlander's Desire is semi-time travel, a prophecized tale about Iain Matheson and his mate, Isla Matheson. Suffice it to say that I don't like time travel stories; I find myself yet again reading one (darn freebies!).

For the most part, this is an uneventful, lackluster story filled with sex and zero action. I was lulled to sleep reading it, which isn't necessarily a bad thing sometimes. A good story to put you to sleep sometimes is very relaxing and welcoming. The story is somewhat interesting but predictable and filled with gratuitous sex as far as the development of Iain and Isla's mating.

The characters are pretty well written, and I liked them. Obviously, I didn't connect with this story because I can barely remember it after only reading it a few days ago. There's not a lot to write about this one because not a lot happened! On my Were Scale of Hotness, 2.5 stars.

Isla and Iain are ment to be together at least that is what the prophecy is telling.
But Isla keeps away from him for five years now, but her time has run out.

Them meeting gives sparks and a fun read.

Think this is the first shifter romance I have read from this author I usually think of her as a historical romance author and she manages to weave this into the story

Ian Matheson has been searching for his one true mate for ages and he knows she is close but for some reason his bear can't track her down little does he know that Isla Matheson is actually hiding from him, When they do meet the attraction is immediate but by mating they reactivate a curse that has troubled the clan since the twelfth century Isla is drawn back to the time of the clans forming and Ian follows his mate as he always will. Be prepared for plenty of hot steamy scenes and also be aware that the book ends on a cliffhanger

Highlander’s Desire is the first book in the Matheson Brothers series. Isla has run from her mate for the past five years, but she knows her time of running is ending. She’s out on a mission trying to catch rouge bears with her partner and best friend when she’s captured and rushed away. Iain is thrilled when he finally finds his mate, and is even happier when their attraction, bond, and love grows stronger with every passing moment. But just as their relationship is beginning, so is their story, as they are traveling back through time. Will their bonds hold true as they fight to save a village from falling?

This book was well paced, beautifully blending the present to the past, and full of a steamy romance that triggered a prophecy! I was completely captured and kept flipping to the next page to see what would happen next! Isla is such a complex figure, avoiding her mate for so long for fear of the unknown, but so strong and courageous to fight, and still possessing a vulnerable side, too! Iain is determined and strong, so open and willing to pleasing his mate, but I loved his protective streaks, too! Together, they seemed to make a really great team! This book was fabulous at setting up the next book in the series, and I look forward to seeing Isla and Iain’s blooming relationship and the continuation of the ‘power of three’ in the next book, too!

This is the first book in Joanne Wadsworth new series The Matheson Brothers (Book One) and what a lovely introduction
at that. There is shape shifters, fae lore but also an amazing adventure and mystery. Do I have your attention? It sure had mine!

In the past 12th century Gilleoin was gifted and has the shape shifting ability to turn into a bear, he also mated with one with faerie blood which they did in secrecy. His clan was called Matheson.

This book is about Isla and Iain Matheson: as (Isla Matheson)whom is running from the one her ancestor prophesied would be hers highland warrior (Iain Matheson). Isla knows she is running out of time, but why as she knows once he captures her she will no longer be able to deny him anything! It also sets the 12 century prophesy into motion, which Isla is not ready for. As it will set her back through time to when their clan began.

Highland warrior shifter, Iain Matheson, has fallen for the beautiful Isla and will do anything to keep her! Iain will even dive into a portal she falls into as he would die for his known mate! Yet they both soon find out the games are over! They both have a mission to save their future lines and save from both the past and the future, yet how will this be accomplished? Must read this exceptional read to find out! Another spectacular read that will blow you away!

Note: I truly loved this original unique story as I think everyone will just want to warn you there is a cliffhanger at the end, but it really goes hand in hand with the story. Plus the fact this fabulous author bangs out her books rather quickly another talent of Ms. Wadsworth. If you love mystic, magic, love and adventure then this is definitely the book for you!

This is a book I would recommend to anyone. If you love highlanders, time travel, or shifters? This is a book for you. It has all three plus the bonus of soulmate's. Who could turn that down? I couldn't put this book down til I finished it. That tells you it is a must read, if anything else. I hope this book makes it to the top of the readers charts, it's that good.

Too much is too much!

Too much sex for me. Takes the joy out of reading for me. I liked sex as much as the next person but this is just dirt to me. I found some really good authors that write excellent books without all that sex.

I found this book for free on Amazon via eBook Discovery; this is my honest review.
-I was glad when I found out I wasn't the only one who thought there were too many bedroom scenes. We don't need them and they are not that hot; they are actually mechanical - Iain and Isla talking all through as if we needed that "open wide for me" "always" (eyeroll). Permissions are asked over and over again. The marking. OMG they keep marking each other at every turn!!! It's like "I'm going to mark you" "Oh no please let me mark you" (eyeroll).
-The other thing that bothered me were the repeats. Blurb, prologue, first few chapters. Then throughout the book, like when Daniel shows his affection to Isla by bringing her hair behind her ear (thrice).
-I was not comfortable at all with Isla compelling Iain of all person, like he was some dangerous monster. Isla also has no respect for the bond but likes to take advantage of it and doesn't keep her promises. She just laughs at Iain's face. She's not feisty and strong. She's immature beyond belief. When she sends dirty pictures to Iain's head while he's in the courtyard fighting hard and he stumbles, she could have gotten him killed. That just clinched it for me. I really didn't like her.
-Anyone else deduced it was extremely weird to eat a dead person's favorite meal every Sunday?
-Confused as who had the baby, the mother or the grandmother? "her midwife handed her son into her mother's waiting arms. Nessa carried her grandson to the wide basin". It cannot be about both sons, the twin is not born yet.
-I didn't understand correctly when in the blurb it says that Isla ran from her FM. I thought it was because something bad would happen. No, not at all. She just didn't want to leave her father, w/o giving Iain a chance to find a solution. Five years. Iain was deeply hurt by her reason too.
-I loved how the time-travelling was done, how it marked the beginning of the prophecy about the triplets. I loved how Ivan found his mate. I loved the triplets bond.
-Ends ~5 days before a big battle in the 12th C. That's a big cliffhanger.

To be honest, I was so confused by this book. At first I thought it was a historical book but then it’s switch to modern times which had me scratching my head. Then I found out there was a time travel element to it, which didn’t happen till the end so then that really boggled the mind. So then it was just kind of like I didn’t know what was going on as they alternated chapters between past present. It was just weird.

And I listen to this through audio so that alters my experience well because the narrator wasn’t the greatest so it was hard to pay attention to everything that was happening because the narration wasn’t there. It wasn’t a pleasant experience.

After a while it just became about them just mating constantly and nothing more. I get this was a fated mate situation, but after awhile it just got to be a little much. That was pretty much the central part of the story and nothing really more exciting.

Also, there was a similar series done by Nora Roberts that was very well done, and I liked it a lot more than this one. So I was making comparison with those books to this one and Nora Roberts just did a better job because I was more invested in her characters and the way that she wrote the story despite it having to timelines and time travel in there as well. Nora Roberts series I could understand so much better than this one.

It just did not work for me on so many levels. I was contemplating not even finishing it, but I slog through and got to the end eventually. I think that ending was the most interesting when they did the actual time traveling thing. Otherwise there was nothing spectacular about it.

I’m absolutely in love with the way this author writes. Her stories flow along in such beautiful prose! The backstory for this series is superb as well, with the history and visions being passed down through the generations. I enjoy the premise of knowing instantly that you belong to each other, and of a mating bond that draws you together. The sex scenes are steamy and fantastic while being very classically written. This being the first of the series, I wasn’t sure exactly what was going on at first, but by the end of the book, I was looking forward to the rest of the stories and seeing how the overall storyline works out.

As an independent reviewer for Romance Authors that Rock I am giving this one four beating hearts. That fifth heart is always reserved for the books that have me in tears by the time I’m through. While I loved all the characters in this realm, there wasn’t that type of an emotional attachment. I enjoyed the story and recommend it to anyone who loves Highlanders, shifters and fae.

Good start to a Highlander Shifter story. This is the beginning of the series about the Matheson family and their family that mixes with the fae. You'll get to a point and then you'll need the next book to continue on. That being said, it was a fast and easy read. There are three brother shifters that are seeking their mates. When the oldest one, Iain, finally finds his (she's been running for 5 years) they bond and set into motion a prophecy. The prophecy begins when the oldest one finds his mate, Isla and the four of them (the brothers and Isla) and sent back to prevent a massacre in the 12th century. This book sets up the story and matches Isla and Iain. I'm off now to read the next book which is focused on one of the brothers, but is another piece in the overall arc. I just started the series but I believe it is close to complete?? So I feel comfortable starting so I don't have to wait for the next book. (I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.)

The blurb for the book intrigued me. I haven't read too much time travel but thought I'd give it a try with the book including shifters and fae.

Overall not a bad read, but not an overwhelmingly good read either. I liked the concept of the fated mates and how Ilsa ran from hers - I thought it would be about fate not dictating her outcome rather than not wanting to leave her father alone.

What made me say 'meh' in my head was the weird mixture of old method training and modern day conveniences. A kilt wearing bad ass who trains with a broadsword and drives a flashy red convertible. Makes sense given the time travel aspect. What I didn't enjoy was Ilsa and Iaian getting together.... hello, you're fated mates... why are you asking if it's ok to kiss here and touch there. That made me feel like there wasn't a lot of chemistry between the two.

Undecided on whether to continue the series.

I have been provided with a review copy of Highlander’s Desire by the author for an impartial review. This is the first book in The Matheson Brothers trilogy and what a way to start the series. I absolutely love this writer’s style and how she brings the characters to life. I’m usually not a fan of a storyline that goes back and forth between past and present but the author did it in such a way that you were totally immersed in each part. It was done stunningly. This book follows Isla and Iain the first of the brothers. I loved seeing them together and how they complete each other. I can’t wait to read the next one in the series to see what happens.

This is the first book in a series that I am coming to love. This first book is mostly set in the present day as Isla runs from her fate with Iain. After she is "caught", she comes to understand that there is more than just their future at stake. As they come together a portal opens and Isla falls through, Iain will not let that be and goes after her. SPOILER - Iain is one of a set of triplets and his 2 brothers follow into the portal.
I found the story funny, entertaining and a really fast read. I am enjoying the series as a whole and do recommend the series.

The basic story was good, but for a girl who avoided her 'mate' for five long years, she was very anxious to bed him. Mated or not, the uncontrolled sexual urges are unrealistic. At least the hero was willing to take things a bit slower, even after waiting for her for so long. If you take the sex out, it's a short story with an intriguing storyline and one that is worth continuing. I hope the next one is more story than sex as there are a lot of unanswered links left hanging that promise to lead to a complex and twisted tale. I found it a little hard to get into even with the strong background story.

Let me just say that there is a lot of sex. Once it starts, it seems like it doesn't stop. The insta-attraction is shifter romances is something that most authors do. That is fine and a few sexy scenes are okay but not this much. I was hoping for more of a story line.

Also as the story takes place in Scotland, I expected the Scottish brogue. Nope they spoke like we do here in the U.S. Another minus for me was the clothing. She slipped into the heavy dress with it's layers. Nope there were layers but not sewn into the dress. It was a process getting dress back then.

Now I know this is fiction but it would be nice for some authenticity.

While this story is well written, and it has super hot sex scenes. It is lacking the heat to go with the hot. The struggle that the leading lady is to have had is gone. No fight, one scene of her running off but that is it. Even that is super short lived as he finds her without having to catch up really, as the author took the liberty of having her already caught.

It is a tad to sweet ... No real twists or turns till the very end of the story. Then its over and moving towards the next story that will cost you.

Review of Highlander's Desire

The book featured strong sexy males and a strong sexy independent heroine. It has lots of steamy sex, romance and suspense. The story is well written, historically accurate and full of paranormal adventures including time travel, bear shifters, and the Fae. I could not put the story down until I finished it. It is a stand-alone book with a HEA ending. Keep up the good work Joanne Wadsworth.

This is entertaining and steamy. Iain is determined, strong, fierce, loyal and caring. Isla is stubborn, bold, playful and loyal. They fated to be together, yet Isla has run from him for 5 years. The storyline weaves a tale of fate and love, not just between them, but also their clans. It's a fun, sexy read that brings them together, and sets the future in motion.
