Legacy

Rate this book
Davis’s collection is Legacy by name and legacy by nature, as the poet constantly returns to the idea of leaving something behind – whether his children, his works, or both. However, while this central theme of making a mark on the world is a prominent one, there are satellite themes hovering around the ideas of love, family, mental health. Rather than shying away from potentially difficult topics, Davis makes a fine show of displaying life’s peaks and troughs alongside each other, making for an emotionally balanced collection.Something else that comes through wonderfully in the first leg of this book is the use of sound. Davis matches his words in terms of their construction and in their out-loud pairings; words complement each other and add a notable rhythm.Davis also displays his talent for killer lines, in ‘Unstoppable’: ‘She looked as though / she were trying to see / right through the world / at something she needed / on the other side’. Don't rush through this beautiful collection in case something important and well-crafted slips you by on the way.
