पुस्तक मराठीत वाचलंय तर बुक रिव्ह्यू पण मराठीत लिहायचा प्रयत्न तरी करायला पाहिजे. असे म्हटले तरी तुम्हाला मराठी आणि इंग्रजी दोन्हीचं कॉम्बिनेशन इथे दिसेल.अकदी एक तास लागला हे लिहायला पण शेवटी थोडाफार जमलं असं मी मलाच समजावून सांगितलंय. आता पुस्तकाचे माझे विचार वाचा.

प्रिया तेंडुलकरांच्या 'असंही' पुस्तकामध्ये 36 शॉर्ट स्टोरीज 145 पानात लिहिल्या आहेत. प्रत्येक गोष्ट 3 पानांहून जास्त नाहीये म्हणून पटकन वाचून होते. भाषाही सोपी आहे, हे मुख्य कारण होतं मी हे पुस्तक वाचायचं. आधी कधी मराठी पुस्तक वाचलं नसल्यामुळे मला फार अपेक्षा नव्हत्या पण या पुस्तकातल्या गोष्टी खूपच छान आढळल्या.

बहुतेक पुस्तकांमध्ये रिलॅ्टेबल सामग्री असते जिथे आपण गोष्टी आणि पात्रांना रिलेट करू शकतो. हे पात्रांच्या भावनांमध्ये किंवा त्यांच्या जगण्याच्या निर्णयांवरून जाणवतं. पण 'असंही' मध्ये सगळ्या गोष्टी वेगळ्याच आहेत. बहुतेक लोकांनी न अनुभवलेल्या आहेत. म्हणून वाचत राहावंसं वाटतं.

कधीकधी एक वयस्कर बाई जिच्याकडे पैसे, बंगला, नोकर-चाकर असतात पण एकटेपण तिच्या आयुष्याचा हायलाईट बनवून ती रडत राहते. कधीकधी गरिबीत राहिलेल्या आईला तिच्या मुलीचा शिक्षण सर्वात महत्वाचे असल्यामुळे ती खूप श्रम करते. एका गोष्टीत व्यसन कसं आयुष्य बदलतं तर एका गोष्टीत एका फेमिनिस्टची सोशल व पर्सनल लाईफ किती वेगळी आहे हे जाणवते.

बऱ्याच गोष्टींमधून स्त्रीशक्ती जाणवते. बऱ्याच गोष्टींमधून डॉक्टर्स, पोलीस, ऍक्टर्स, ड्रायव्हर्स अशी पात्रे आणि त्यांच्या कहाण्या वाचायला मजा येते. पण सगळ्याच गोष्टींमधून "हे असंही होतं?" असा प्रश्न पडतो आणि त्यातच अख्या पुस्तकाचं महत्व समुद्राच्या खोलातून पृष्ठभागावर येऊन असा नवा दृष्टिकोन लाभतो. मी प्रिया तेंडुलकरांच्या 'असंही' पुस्तकाला 4/5 स्टार्स दिले आहेत.

I have read Priya's autobiography earlier and am familiar with her writing. However, this anthology of events in her life, really showcases 2 things -
1. An astute and ever observing brain. A quality most certainly inherited from her eminent father.
2. Literary prowess of conveying a real life episode in simple, optimum and everyday lingo. This although sounds easy, is in my opinion a difficult task, because keep it too simple and every dayish, and you run the risk of losing the reader to your watery narrative and the other extreme runs the risk puts the author in the Tolstoy shelf, too complicated. Priya has managed to strike a strong balance. Through this book, she has succeeded in peeling the various layers of real humans around us on a day to day basis. That is why this book has a common man charm. Must read.

The blurb mentions that this book comes under 'Lalit Sadar'. But, many of the 'articles' are somewhat more narrative, much like a story. Others are simple depictions of daily life, which we can relate to. It just shows how observant and sensitive Priya was to her surroundings. The collection is not just a compilation of her 'Lalit Lekhan'; it has undertones of social awareness.
