This hands-on manual from Leigh McCullough and associates teaches the nuts and bolts of practicing short-term dynamic psychotherapy, the research-supported model first presented in Changing Character , McCullough's foundational text. Reflecting the ongoing evolution of the approach, the manual emphasizes "affect phobia," or conflict about feelings. It shows how such proven behavioral techniques as systemic desensitization can be applied effectively within a psychodynamic framework, and offers clear guidelines for when and how to intervene. Demonstrated are procedures for assessing patients, formulating core conflicts, and restructuring defenses, affects, and relationship to the self and others. In an easy-to-use, large-size format, the book features a wealth of case examples and write-in exercises for building key clinical skills.
Wonderful, exciting, fascinating, surprising. This book completely won me over, having been skeptical on the use of manuals before giving this a chance. Thinking about this book makes me think how big a loss it was to the understanding of the human emotional life that Leigh McCullough passed away. The idea of her unpublished / unfinished book is one I will carry with me for a long time, an idea every fan of her could carry on in their own way.
This book does an excellent job of laying out STDP in a step-by-step fashion. It does a great job of helping the reader develop case conceptualization skills according to this theoretical framework. The end of every chapter has a little "check your skills and knowledge" section which helps to test and integrate the information you learn in each chapter. My other like for this book is it's use of transcripts to provide examples of therapist skills, which are useful to any new therapist who is starting out.
My only issue with the book is that is sometimes 'over explains' a concept. I assume the authors were erring on the side of caution that some people might need a bit more info/examples to really get a concept. I cannot fault them for trying to make sure each and every reader will understand the concepts laid out in this book. But sometimes I found some of the info repeated again and again over multiple chapters. It really drove the info home though!
