I’ve been rereading Penny Candy over and over again for two years or something. It’s killing me. Seriously. I want to know what happens next!
I remember stumbling over this story several times, not wanting to read it. I mean, come on, it’s about a prostitute and a stripper. How cheap does that sound? I didn’t want to read some stupid trashy novel about mindless sex, sex and again – SEX. But this turned out to be so much more. The story, the plot, the characters – I’m addicted.
So.. the main character, Kaz, is a dancer. But that is NOT as poor quality as it sounds. It’s just a job, no “I have to dance naked so I’m feeling dirty and need help” kind of moral stuff. It’s a normal, stable job with mostly nice co-workers. Well, except for Smiley, the best evil character ever! But back to the story; When Kaz, full name Cassius Verona (I LOVE this name!!!), meets Lee in a club and takes him home for a one night stand AND discovers that Lee is a hooker things start to develop in an unexpected direction.
The relationship between Lee and Kaz is bizarre but beautiful. Kaz has a lot of issues because of his past lover (who you fall in love with immediately and who breaks your heart throughout that story) and Lee is struggling with being homeless, even if he does not whine about it. And somehow, somewhere it develops into some kind of an uncertain love-friendship-thing. Which is great, it makes their relationship true.
Things get more dangerous when Kaz’s friend, Coker – who is a hell of a character, gets himself too deep in this drug thing. I love the drug idea by the way. Everything falls into place, there are no questions left. The mystery about Kaz’s ex, Joker, unfolds right before your eyes. It’s a true bliss to read this, because it’s thought through rather nicely.
What I liked about this book is that the author creates this parallel world. Resembles nowadays America but darker. People have to get tested and renew their IDs, everyone seems to have an extra nick name – which gives this story an extra gangster feeling or something. It’s strange because Kaz lives in a poor, dirty part of the city but it seems cooler this way, kinda bad ass. And while you read it, you are being pulled into this strange and unique world. I really don’t want to spoil it by revealing more of the plot, but this story is definitely worth your time. And it’s so well written, simple, straight forward and honest. A true penny candy!
