About the author

Chilakamarti Lakshmi Narasimham(చిలకమర్తి లక్ష్మీనరసింహం) was an Indian playwright, novelist and author of short stories, who wrote in the Telugu language. He was a romantic and a social reformer in the tradition founded by Veeresalingam. His best-known plays are probably Gayopakhyanam (1909) and Ganapati (1920).

Narasimham was visually impaired since his youth, and became blind after his graduation. He nonetheless served as an instructor in Telugu at the Government Arts College in Rajahmundry. He was active in the Indian independence movement; he eschewed "foreign cloth" and wore khādī dhoti, shirt, coat and turban.

గణపతి - చిలకమర్తి

సమీక్ష:
రమారమి 100 సంవత్సరాల క్రితం రాసిన కథ.
గణపతి నవల చదువుతున్నంత సేపూ నవ్వుతూనే వుంటాము. ఆనాటి సమాజంలో వున్న దురాచారమైన కన్యాశుల్కాన్ని, బద్ధకాన్ని పురిగొల్పే విధంగా వున్న యాచకం (ఇది నా అభిప్రాయం) పై వ్యంగ్యంగా రాసిన నవల.

ఆ కాలంలోనే ఎంతో ప్రాచుర్యం పొందినది. వాట్సాప్ లు, టివిలు, ఇంటర్నెట్ లు, ఇవేవీ లేని ఆ రోజుల్లో తెలుగునాట రేడియోలో ప్రసారమయ్యే ఈ కథను వినటీనికి జనాలు రేడియోల దగ్గర గుమిగూడేవారనీ, రెండు సంవత్సరాలపాటు తెలుగు ప్రజానీకాన్ని ఈ నవల అలరించిందనీ, అదీ వంద సంవత్సరాల క్రితం, అంతలా ఎదురుచూసే లా రాసారనీ తెలిసి ఆశ్చర్యపోయాను.

అతిశయమైన కవితా వర్ణనలు లేవు. కేవలం వాచకము. చాలా బాగా అర్థమవుతుంది. అసలు నన్నడిగితే, ( ఎంతో గెప్పవైన మన తెలుగు పుస్తకాలు కాస్త గ్రాంధికం లో వుండగానే, "మేము చదువలేము బాబోయ్ !!" అని మొత్తుకునేవారు) ముందుగా గణపతి చదివి తరువాత వేయిపడగలు లాంటివి చదవటం మంచిదంటాను.

మొత్తానికి ఎక్కడా బోర్ కొట్టకుండా, హాయిగా చదువుకోగలిగిన నవల "గణపతి".

వాని గుణగణములు - చెప్పుటకు శక్యము కావు. వాని భుక్తి - తీర్చుటకు వీలు కాదు. వాని బద్ధకము - మాన్పుటకు తరముగాదు. వాని తెలివితేటలు - చెప్పనలవికాదు.

వాని వంశచరితము - రచయిత తక్క మరియొకరు వ్రాయుటకు సాహసించలేరు. వానిని కనిన జనులే జనులు. వానిని జూసిన కనులే కనులు. వాడు పండించిన హాస్యమే హాస్యము. మన తెలుగువారియదృష్టమే యదృష్టము... 🤣

Written in old Telugu, this book narrates the biography of a young man, Ganapati, of Pappubhotla family, residing in villages near the Godavari river. The book begins with the way in which the author got acquainted with Ganapati and goes on to describe the family history of our hero. Later he narrates the birth, childhood and later years of Ganapati. It does not carry the entire life story of Ganapati. The author laments that he was unable to get the details of remaining stages of our hero's life.

This is a very entertaining work from Chilakamarthi's pen. The narration appears serious but is sarcastic and funny to the core. With 20 chapters, the book is a treat to Telugu lovers. I liked the book very much.

This book was recommended to me long ago by my husband but I neglected after reading few pages because it was in old Telugu. But I seriously decided this time to complete it and make it the first one for this year. I finally succeeded. I would have missed a great comic novel if I had neglected it again. The language shouldn't be a hindrance to read the book. One would find it enjoyable after a few pages and can read at normal speed.

గణపతి చిలకమర్తి లక్ష్మీ నరసింహం గారు రాసిన హస్య నవల. సుమారుగా 100 సంవత్సరాల క్రితం రాసిన నవల ఇది. ఇప్పటికి మనం చదువుతున్నామంటే ఈ నవల పాఠకులన్నీ యెంత అలరిస్తుందో చెప్పనవసరంలేదు. ఇందులో ప్రధాన పాత్రధారి పేరు గణపతి . ఈ నవల గణపతి మరియు అతని తండ్రి తాతల జీవితాలను చిత్రీకరిస్తుంది. గణపతి నవల చదువుతున్నంత సేపూ నవ్వుతూనే వుంటాము. గణపతి భౌతిక రూపం మొదలు గుణగణములు, చేష్టలు, భుక్తి, బద్ధకము, తెలివితేటలు అన్నీ హాస్యాన్ని ప్రేరేపిస్తూనే ఉంటాయి. గణపతి విద్యాబ్యాసం, వృత్తి, పెళ్లి నాకు నచ్చిన కథాంశాలు. ఇందులో రచయత తన జీవనకాలంలోని సమాజములో వున్న సమస్యలను వ్యంగ్యంగా వర్ణిస్తూనే విమర్శించారు. నవల అంతా గ్రాంధిక భాషలో వుంటుంది. అందుకు చదివేటప్పుడు అర్ధం చేసుకొనడానికి కొంచం సమయం పట్టేది. అయినప్పటికీ ఎక్కడా విసుగు కొట్టకుండా హాయిగా నవ్వుతు చదువుకోగలిగిన నవలిది.

తెలుగులో కూడా ఇంతటి హాస్యం పండించిన నవల అప్పుడెప్పుడోనే వచ్చిందంటే మీరు నమ్మరు.
శ్రీ రాముడు చారు ఎందుకు పెట్టారో తెలుసుకోవాలంటే మీరు ఈ నవల చదివి తీరాల్సిందే! :D

I have listened to this on Dasubhashitam. The narrator is the absolute best and I am convinced this is the best way to go through a Telugu book from now on.

Coming to the book, Lakshmi Narasimham Garu's Ganapathi is one of the most popular Telugu texts of the 20th century. It is a laugh riot with the main character, his father, and grandfather acting as the story's main characters. Awful men, all three of them, but much like modern Mr. Bean, their antics make for a good chuckle.

1920లో వచ్చింది ఈ పుస్తకం. గ్రాంధికం. మొక్కపాటి వారి బారిస్టర్ పార్వతీశం అమాయకుడైతే ఈ గణపతి మొద్దు, మూర్ఖుడు, బద్ధకస్తుడు. ఆ కాలపు స్థితిగతులని అద్దం పడుతుంది. సున్నితమైన హాస్యం.
