Angel is hired by Sam Binks to find the syndicate's missing two million dollars. It was being shipped north by moving van when the truck had a flat. When the driver returned with help, the truck was on fire. Binks suspected a rat when no evidence in the burnt hulk could be found. A brass bound trunk had held the money and no burnt metal bits were found.
Angel soon runs afoul of the sheriff because he resembles a mystery man who'd been snooping around. He soon figures out the sheriff, his deputy, and the truck driver are involved. But who is the mystery man? The driver is found murdered.
