What place do the promises of God hold in your life? I would suggest that God intends them to play an important role--which is often not the case at least among Americans today. I by no means claim that God's promises are as prominent in my life as they should be, but I am certainly seeking to work on that as a problem. This recent book is a great help to that end. The promises of God are not preached about today and as closely studied as was the case when the Puritans lived. Joel Beeke and James LaBelle have sought to bring us a compilation of what three great Puritan writers (Andrew Gray, Edward Leigh, and William Spurstowe) taught about the promises of God in such a way as to speak to people today. They do a great job and I would recommend this book to everyone.

This book is a good reminder that God is a covenant God who is faithful to keep his promises. The first half of the book is a discussion about God's promises in general: what a promise is, who's it for, the characteristics of a promise. The second half discusses promises made by God concerning different topics: affliction temptation, sin, holiness.

Plus ... full of puritan writing which is always good.

This is an amazing book. About halfway through reading it I was able to meet one of the authors, James La Belle, and was blessed to see he lives out what he writes in this book. He is living out the promises of God. This book has helped me understand the importance of living out God’s promises and how to do so.

This is one of those books that you should read once a year as a Christian. There is so much goodness that you have to digest it in small bites, but it is definitely worth it.

Eh, 3.5 stars? Read through this as a small group study. I did like the foundation building regarding the promises of God and then the application (I always jump to application too fast). However, it was written in such a seminarian way- it’s not accessible (or easily accessible) to those who aren’t familiar with church speak. The KJV is so polarizing to a good portion of denominations. We have a group of folks in different places in their spiritual walk (brand new believers and decades of believing) and ALL struggled with the ideas that were laid out in way that was difficult to understand. I truly think this could have been written in a way that would reach and encourage the non-seminary attending Christian and was disappointed the authors neglected this audience.

Unfortunately, it’s really hard to find a book on God’s promises that’s theologically sound (and doesn’t veer into prosperity gospel), so it’s what we had to work with.

This is an absolute must read! Very uplifting and encouraging. I read through this book twice in the middle of very trying and difficult seasons and improved my prayer life and increased my hope and faith in God in the midst of being tested.

Loved this book so much. It's easy to gloss over or take God's promises for granted and not apply them to everyday life. This book also helped me see just how many promises there are in the old testament covering s wide range of topics. Highly recommend.

Very good book to point you to the realities to be grasped in the promises of God but it doesn't spend much time examining those promises or telling you the specific places to find this promises in the Bible. Vey good but not exactly what I thought it would be.

This was a fairly short book but excellent. It was filled with many Puritan quotes and Scripture references as is to be expected from a book done by RHB.

My main criticism is actually of the audio book reader. His voice was pretty soporific!

I read this book with my community group at church. A bit dense at times (it’s based on the writings of three Puritan ministers), but a lot of good insights on the importance of knowing God’s promises to His people and relying on those promises when life gets hard.
