This novel splits in two, following the stories of two separate characters who live two seemingly entirely different, but in depth similar lifes. One of them is Rahal, the son of a great Emir who rules the Army of sands. Rahal is destined by his father to become an Emir himself one day, and he is more than capable to. However, Rahal has other plans, and the story progresses with him questioning his father’s actions and trying to embrace who he is while at the same time he can’t deny his origins and his training as a warrior which follows him everywhere he goes. The other character is Ingvald, the son of an equally bossy father, who pushes him to embrace the “dirty” life of a noble in persue of power. Ingvald who is just an average person that happened to be born in a noble family, finds himself into a constant and dangerous game of power and manipulation that has losers and winners just like any other game.
