Personal response: I like this book because it talks about the miraculous survival of men who should have been dead when they were only wounded or unscathed. I also like reading about the bravery of the soldiers.

Plot summary: All of the ten men in this book fought for our country in a different way from being an armed medic to a turret gunner and a Provisional Reconstruction Team member. With a few more positions in between including being a commander on the front lines. All of the men in the book got medals for what they did during combat.

Recommendation: I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about ten heroes from afghanistan that fought for our country and survived. I recommend this book to any guy who likes reading about war memoirs and is not worried about occasional graphic scenes. I recommend this book to any girl who isn’t squeamish about the description of wounds on the front lines, including RPG wounds.

In Battle Heroes Voices from Afghanistan, the author’s purpose for writing this book was to tell the world about the courageous members of the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines who risk their life every day to protect and preserve freedom for the United States of America. These brave Americans have risked their lives to carry out missions in a deadly world of roadside bombs, ambushes, and suicidal terrorists. The author, Allan Zullo, has written ten stories that reflect the heroism that has occurred, and continues to occur, during the war in Afghanistan. The heroes featured in the book have earned top military medals for their bravery. The author wanted to write this book so that he could tell the stories of the war in Afghanistan and to show us what our American soldiers go through on a daily basis fighting the war.
Captain Jason Amerine is a Green Beret who received the Distinguished Service Cross which is given to a member of the United States Army for remarkable bravery, extraordinary heroism, and sacrifice in battle against an enemy of the United States. Captain Amerine and his small force of ten Green Berets and an Air Force combat controller were given a difficult mission. They were to help Afghan freedom fighters overthrow the Taliban regime and destroy the al-Qaeda camps. Destroying the camps would mean al-Qaeda would no longer have a training area for the new generation of extremists. They used F-16 fighter jets that dropped bombs on the 500 Taliban militants that were trying to approach the camps. The militants started scattering and the Berets on the ground, along with the help of the freedom fighters, started a gun fight with the surviving militants. After what seemed like forever, the fighting stopped and the militants were dead. The mission was a success.
Specialist Gregory Ruske was with the Pennsylvania National Guard’s Third Battalion, 103rd Armor Regiment, working under the 101st Airborne Division. His group participated in “presence patrols” which were when soldiers entered areas unannounced to let the locals and the Taliban know that the military was there to give support and help to the locals. The night the group was entering Afghanya, they were ambushed. All he could hear was the noise of machine guns, AK-47s, and grenades going off around him. The group started firing back and killing the members of the Taliban who were firing at them. Specialist Ruske survived the attack, but several of his group did not. They were able to take control of the village and help the locals that survived get to safety. Death is an everyday occurrence when you are in war. Specialist Gregory Ruske was awarded the Silver Star for his actions during the attack.
Staff Sergeant Jason Fetty was a member of a Provisional Reconstruction Team. The teams job was to help build up a war-weary country plagued with suicide bombings, insurgent attacks, hardship, and a weak government. The team had improved roads, bridges, and dams; built and repaired schools, medical facilities, drilled wells; increased security and trained local police and government officials to find ways to meet the basic needs of the people. Fetty saw firsthand how insurgents willingly blew themselves up to kill those who opposed them. While riding in an army convoy, a suicide bomber jumped on the hood of one of the Humvees and detonated his explosive-filled vest. None of the soldiers were injured, but the blast killed an innocent little girl standing on the side of the road. Seeing her body on the side of the road, left several soldiers in tears. During his time in Afghanistan, Staff Sergeant Fetty witnessed many suicide bombers and was also injured during one. Staff Sergeant Jason Fetty was awarded the Silver Star, becoming the first Army Reserve soldier to receive the medal for valor in Afghanistan. He was also given the Purple Heart for his wounds.

The author did a fantastic job showing the heartaches and devastations war can bring. He made each soldiers story personal by telling us about their hometowns and families. War does not just affect the soldiers who are fighting, but it affects their families at home who are hoping they return safely to them. To many time during this war, soldiers did not return home. When reading this book, you get a sense of what the soldiers go through every day. No matter how you feel about this war, the Americans in uniform deserve our support, our respect, and our thanks. This book does a fantastic job of doing all of those.

Personal Response- I thought this book was a great book. All of the stories were very detailed and showed how hard it was to be in Afghanistan at that time. Some of the soldiers in this book lost a lot to protect the United States.

Plot- The main point in this book is to show how difficult times were for these soldiers who fought for our freedom. There are ten stories in this book that show a lot. All these stories are true, from the voices of real soldiers telling their stories of when they were on their mission. Staff sergeant Jason “Jake” Kimberling and his comrades are fighting the battle of Ebrahimkhel in Afghanistan. The story takes place in a small town with Taliban soldiers that are trying to capture citizens and make them slaves. Jake set up his men all around the town and slowly but surely killed all the Taliban soldiers and saved the people of the town.

Characterization- There are ten main characters in this book. My three favorite ones were Captain Jason Amerine, Lieutenant Stephen Boada, and Master Sergeant Sarun Sar. These three men fought very hard and lost many friends and what they call family.

Setting- All stories in this book take place in Afghanistan at different times with different people. Many stories can take place in a cave, abandon house, or in the air. Most of the stories in this book take place during the day so the men can see what they're doing, but some take place at night for sneaking in on enemy lands to not be seen.

Recommendation- I recommend this book to boys and girls in seventh grade and up. Both genders may like the topic of the book, and after reading it they would like to join the service and defend our country. It can show them that it is very hard to be a soldier and takes a lot of bravery.

The central idea for this book is war stories. It is developed over the course of the text by the multiple stories of war and battles. These battles shape the description of what we automatically assume war is. As it deeply describes each battle, we can see how frightening and aweful war is. This also helps us to realize how heroic the soldiers are that give their lives for the continuation of any country.
The main idea of this book can be described with the word hero. The book continues to drive this home with each individual story of great soldiers. Every story is about a person being selfless or helping others. I believe it does fit the dictionary definition of “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities”, because the stories of the “heros” in this book are definitely courageous, outstanding, and complete great achievements. They all complete very incredible acts of courage and helpfulness, and all definitely drive the idea home of heroism.
Overall I really enjoyed this book. The author did a good job in capturing the moment and displaying it, so you could almost feel like you were there. They portrayed the heros very well and I feel told you about them in a good way. I found myself making pictures of the scenes in my head many times, and overall putting myself in the moment. I feel this author did a very good job for the topic, and I would definitely recommend this book.

battle heros: Voices from Afghanistan is a book that shares the true stories of the solders who fought in the war in Afghanistan. Through their personal experiences readers can learn about the tough challenges they faced, the bravery the showed, and the book helps us understand what its really like to be in war, showing both the good and the bad sides of being a solder. its a good way to learn something new about a part of history that many people don't know much about. I would give this book 4 stars because it teaches important lessons and helps u see the world through the eyes of those who lived through it.

My stepdad was one of these men in the story but had his named changed like the rest of the soldiers. This book is accurate to the tiniest detail.I was touched emotionally by what these marines had to go through and understand the extreme levels of stress that they had to deal with. The fact that these marines were able to accomplish their task even under these crushing odds is admirable in the highest regard.Thank you Allan Zullo for opening peoples eyes to these real events.

This book was intense, because all the battles and experiences were true. I had to stop after each chapter and take a break. Definitely a sign of good writing if the emotions and experiences are coming across that strongly. The only reason I rated it lower is because it took such a toll on me. If you do not get phased by devastating battle scenes you probably wouldn't rate it as low.

I'm a very patriotic man and this is just a trow to the fallen men and women even though they don't die in this book. But it is a feeling of morning to think of the sacrifices just to have the rights we have. Why would anyone want to destroy our freedoms? This shows how bad it can be out in the field and how at risk you really are. my favorite story has to be lieutenant Stephen Boada.

It was interesting to read about the different battles that were fought. However, some of the stories at the beginning of the book seemed to glorify the killing a people. Towards the end of the book, the stories just told the story of the battle.

Battle Heroes is about 10 stories about men who helped people in war. The main character saved a crowd from a suicide bomber. He distracted him so he would not be in the crowd of people so not as much people would get hurt or injured. Then the bomb went off and 5 people were injured and they were helping the worst injured people.
Two people were seriously injured and the people who weren't they helped them and they survived. Another time a suicide bomber jumped on a hummer and hurt 2-3 people and killed a little girl on the side of the road.
This book is a good book. You should read it if you like war books. It is sad although it is a very good book. Find out more about the book and read all of the ten true tales.

If you want a realistic story of unbelievable feats of bravery, then you should read Battle Heroes: Voices from Afghanistan. The war in Afghanistan involving US troops was caused by the Nine-Eleven terrorist attack. This book of numerous stories creates an ideal book about America fighting terrorists with a great purpose, strong theme, and a straightforward writing style.

The author's purpose in this book was of many, but mainly to educate us of soldiers bravery and bring upon us thankfulness of our soldiers from Afghanistan. It isn't stated directly; however it is obviously stated with every individual story. The stories themselves tell of of the great bravery of the soldiers. Much like in the book when a soldier helped five people across a minefield at night. This is no ordinary task and would take a great deal of confidence. Obviously within these stories an amount of gratitude is developed towards soldiers. Much like, I believe, the author wanted.

I believe the greatest theme that prevailed to me was bravery. Not just bravery, but the ability to keep going when all odds are stacked against you. This is shown throughout the book especially when Amerine led twelve texans and a few scared locals to fight a Taliban force of five hundred (p.10-11). This is an extraordinary act of bravery in unbelievable odds. Although the locals fled, causing the twelve Americans to leave, it still required a great deal of courage and bravery to stand up to such a large force, with so few. Another example of this is when Sergeant Sar runs up a hill blazing with enemy fire to protect his fellow soldiers (p. 42-43). This act is a huge show of selflessness to protect his fellow soldiers, and whether he realized it or not, it required more courage than most people dream of having. These acts really make the theme extraordinarily strong.

The style of the book Battle Heroes: Voices from Afghanistan is definitely a narrative, as most nonfiction books are. It's a narrative because it is a story following various characters. The style is very effective as it is telling the story of different situations our troops encountered in Afghanistan. It seems at no point it tries to persuade you of anything, but solely to tell you these stories. Narrative seems natural to be the style of this writing because it's made up of a storyline of facts. They all come together to form a story. A very straight forward story.
Overall I thought it was a good book. I wouldn't consider it my favorite book, but it would win a seven out of ten. I liked the straightforward aspect of everything. It didn't waste time wondering off in a random direction. It always stayed on topic. I didn't like the lack of buildup to the action going on. It gave a few sentences of what had been happening then jumped right into the action. I would definitely add more build up to what's happening if I were to change anything. It almost reminded me of textbooks in the way it is written. Except for the fact that a textbook has a strong buildup to things; whereas this book didn't.

Battle Heroes Voices From Afghanistan

The authors purpose for writing this book is to tell readers some of the true stories of soldiers that were in Afghanistan and some of the things they went through and seen that changed their lives forever. I think this is the main purpose because not very many people know what its like to be in the military and a lot of soldiers don't forget things that they see when fighting for our freedom. Also, this book is able to show people how some of the soldiers families survive after finding out their beloved one isn't coming home. For the readers, this book is for anyone and the main point in this book is to show the sacrifice made for our country.

The theme of this book is mental state of mind. The reason why it is mental state of mind is because for all of the soldiers in the book, they had to be strong mentally with all the craziness around them and they were in positions of do or die. Also with many of their service buddies around them getting killed, some of the soldiers have a hard time getting past that and go home with PTSD and have the beginning of it when they are still fighting for our freedom.

This book was told by many soldiers telling their stories about their experience in Afghanistan and some of the trials they had to face to survive. This book is narration because it is told by real life soldiers and their families telling the readers some of the struggles and heartaches they faced during the war, or losing someone special to them. Each chapter in this book was a different story from and different soldier telling their reaction to the war in Afghanistan. They end up going back through some of the painful memories so we can know the dedication they want to serve for the United States and a few other countries.

I personally really liked this book because it was told by real soldiers and I got to hear stories you don't hear everyday about the war that happened in Afghanistan and the heroism that happened while these soldiers were serving. The biggest thing I disliked was how many of the soldiers died in the war and it was sad how some soldiers died while saving their "brothers". This book reminds me of a book about 9/11 and the heroism showed during that tragedy. I recommend that you read this book and hear about these soldiers stories from Afghanistan.

Battle Heroes Voices from Afghanistan Scholastic Inc., 2010, 159p.p., $4.99
Written by Alan Zullo ISBN 972-0-545-20642-6

Battle Heroes Voices from Afghanistan is a non-fiction action packed book that takes place in Afghanistan. Each chapter is tells the story of leaders from different squads who fought in Afganastan. The first chapter tells the main conflict about how Al Qaeda is trying to take control of Tarin Kowt. The battle takes place in a village know as Tarin Kowt. The main characters in the chapter are Captain Jason Amerine and Alan Yoshida, the bomber of the battle.

The author, Allan Zullo, did a great job putting you in the heat of battle with Jason Amerine and the other soldiers. I didn't like how the author formatted the chapters with each chapter being told from a different soldier's story; I really wanted to stick with one soldier and watch him progress throughout the whole story. My favorite part of the book was when Captain Jason Amerine and his fellow soldiers were calling in airstrikes and he uses his favorite quote, “Smoke 'Em” and immediately Alan Yoshida comes in with 10,000 pounds of explosives and “Smokes 'Em”. The important theme in this book would be war and combat. Although it is about a serious topic, Battle Heroes... makes for an easy read. There is a lot of gut raunchy comedy. It is also a 3rd person book being told to the reader by the author. This book is a little bit like Purple Heart written by Patricia McCormick.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about war books or anyone who wants to learn more about the Afghanistan War. Battle Heroes Voices from Afghanistan has a lot of violence and some strong language. I would recommend this book to anyone 13 or older. “In a remote Afghan village marine lieutenant Stephan Boada picks up a chilling Taliban message on his radio scanner: “The Americans will never make it out alive.” Can the outnumbered marines fight their way out?

I picked this paperback by Allan Zullo because I've always been interested in war stories and war itself. This story consists of various battle heroes' epic tales. It vividly describes their point of view in a place of chaos, and at the same time, gives all the details to allow the reader to experience the battle themselves. The American armed forces are kicking Taliban butt in Afghanistan. My favorite quote would be, "This is Sniper Two-One. Fourteen targets have been neutralized." Basically, when a Marine Lieutenant and his elite Green Beret squad literally fought the Taliban to the death, the team intercepted more messages by militants saying there was an ambush awaiting the Americans. The Lieutenant then asked for air support and its 105 mm cannons blew the terrorist to pieces. I picked it because it clearly shows what happens when terrorists mess with the Americans, and what our military has to face in the Middle East, for better or worse. It sounded so epic, it kind of gave me goosebumps. I enjoyed Zullo's detailed, complex, and page-turning writing style. I also liked how he gave the point of view to various people in different situations and how it let the reader know what was going on at all times. I would recommend this book to people into action-packed thrillers that are intrigued by danger and surviving it. I would not recommend it to anyone who doesn't like reading about combat and death in, unfortunately, a war-torn state. This book is filled with that kind of action.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live the life of a truly elite soldier? Now you can experience the valor and determination of a hero in Battle Heroes Voices from Afghanistan by Allan Zullo! The book takes you inside the life of some of the greatest soldier stories that you can find. There is divine excitement on every page and it is a real “edge of your seat” book. There are ten different stories instilled in the book and they all real you in. One of them is about a squad of green berets put into a city to analyte a group of al-qaeda leaders and followers. The few men rally and arm civilians to create a defense to protect the city from the coming offensive of al-qaeda. They miraculously hold them off and they are seen as true heroes.
I greatly enjoyed this book because it had military stories which are some of my favorite things to read about. I like these kind of books because they have a lot of action which keeps the book interesting. I would recommend it to people that like a lot of action in their favorite kind of books. I recommend it to people over the age of 12. It was a good book and i liked it.

Do you love action, adventure, or thrillers? Well if you answered yes this is the book for you. Battle Heroes Voices from Afghanistan/ War Heroes Voices from Iraq talks about heart pumping moments of war in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is written by Allan Zullo who this time out did him self. You can read about lieutenant from captains, mostly every rank. This is a not put down book, once you get started I guarantee you won’t put it down. It will tell you what it’s like in war, like when you loose a friend in It and how hard it is to recover. Discover what it’s like to be in a war.
I liked this book because it made me feel like i was there. The author gives very descriptive details, also it says what happens play by play. My favorite part is when the author says what the hero gets medal wise or if they get ranked up.
What i don't like about it is how it goes to different chps instead of staying on one person. There's not much bad things to say about this book, it's good and fun to read. I would give this book a 5 out of 5 for action, adventure, and thrillers.

This book is about 10 stories of acts of heroism in the war in Afghanistan. It tells stories like how Marine Lieutenant Stephan Boada was on a mission to a neighboring village to get information on drug lords and al-Queda militants. While they were in the village they overheard on their scanner that the militants were setting up on an ambush on his team. So Boada ordered his team to search for the valley for them so that once they located the militants the troops could call in air support to take out the militants. Unfortunately, it was too cloudy for air support right away. Once the gunner team located the militants after circling above them on the ridge, Boada called again for air support. Two A-10 warthogs flew and strafed the enemy militants. Lieutenant Boada could here the militants say things over his scanner that helped pinpoint the militants position so that he could give directions to the pilots where to lay down their fire. This action helped take out the militants and saved his team.

this book is about heros in battle that are Afghanistan and some of them died in this book and it is a true story. One of the stories is like these two guys are in a battle and one of the guys gets shot in the head and leg and he didn't die! Don't ask how cause i dont know it was like a miricle i guess but anyway he survived but they had to take him to the doctor guy and get him better so that he could go to war the next day again. Most of the stories the guys usually get hit by a bullet but a few they dont and they go untouched. In another story a couple guys and they were snipers and they both killed a lot of afghan troops which is good cause they are not on our side and they heroes and it was pretty awesome to read but i wish that i could have seen it in rael life without getting shot cause that would suck. I would reccomend this book if you like battle and war and stuff like that and it is a pretty good book so read it if you like war and battle and heroes of battle and stuff.

Battle Heroes: Voices From Afghanistan is a book that contains ten true stories from veterans that fought in Afghan. When I picked up this book, I knew it was going to be a fun read all the way through. By that I mean this book was written for the fun of reading, so its not perfect. Most of the ten stories I read in this novel were amazing and captured the action directly from the soldier's eyes. Unfortunately, not all the stories were as amazing as I thought they would be. Some stories lacked detail, back story, and were just too dull to be interested in. Although the rest of the stories were really memorable and far better. Such as one tale in which a sergeant's base is hit with friendly fire from an AC-130 gunship because some careless soldier gave the wrong coordinates. Or another tale where a corporal is shot in the face and survives. Overall, I would recommend this book to any war fanatic but be warned; some of the tales may not be as mind-blowing as you think they would be.

This book I've just finished is about warfare going on in Afghanistan. The beginning events in this book happen shortly after 9/11, the destruction of the WTC, the attack on the Pentagon, and the plane crashing into open fields. This book in particular is about ten true stories from actuall soldiers expierience in war. It starts out with Jason Amerine, rank Captain being informed from one of his friends that the twin towers have been attacked. A while after he and his Green Beret[Elite team type in the army] comrades are deployed into Afghanistan, he's wondering how will this all go down. You'll have to read the book if you want to know more. Overall this is a very actiony book and it's exactly like a call of duty storyline. I give this a 5 star because it stuck to it's plot, kept me entertained, and also gave an educational gallery at the end of the book.

This book is mostly stories about heroes from Afghanistan. One of the stories is about a medic helicopter that goes to dangerous zones and picks up wounded people. Another story is about a group of marines that are clearing a house and they come in contact with some Taliban people. Also there is a story about a group of marines are escorting some supply trucks and they hit an IED and it exploded and took out one of the supply trucks.

When the IED exploded a ton of Taliban people popped out from the ditch on both sides of the convoy. The Taliban started shooting at the marines and the marines returned fire. Some of the marines were hit and a medic had to take care of them. when it was all over most of the Taliban solders were dead. only about three or four of the marines were hit but nun where killed.

In the book battle heroes by Allan Zullo Mark DeCorte is the main character and he is a marine medic.
When lieutenant Stephen Boada Finds the death message from the Taliban he is startled. That is when they attack, the marines are out gunned and can do much more then one of them gets injured and they have to call in a medic or he will die. That is when Mark is sent on a helicopter for a rescue mission. It is night so it will be easier to go there undetected but it will still be difficult. He finds the camp and starts to help then he sees something in his hip, it is an unexploded rpg round and could go off at any moment. so he tells his team to get out. He has never dealt with a rpg especially not on a live patient.

This book is very inspiring and it shows ho hard It is to be an American soldier. The tales help people understand that everyone over in the Middle East is not our enemy and most want to help us get the terrorists out of that region and out of our lives. This book I think had a lot of meaning to it and I would rate it a 10 out of 10 beachside of how it was written and the realism. This book also got me thinking and I want to get a copy and annotate and read it again to get a better understanding. Overall this is an amazing book and I hope other people will enjoy it as much as I did

every time Boada poked his head in, he aimed his weapon and flashlight ready to shoot anything that moved. he kept thinking. "i hope i see them before they see me." Although Boada had been in the marines for seven years, and been involved in a few skirmishes, this was his first real taste of combat in Afghanistan. Suddenly during the cave clearing, he heard a burst of AK47 fire about 25 yards away and then heard screams of "I've been hit" and "help me."

This book was amazing, and it went by so quick. It was about what some of the soliders did when they were out deffending our country. One example was a man had a rocket lodged into him, but he lived. Anyone that wants to know how they are free should read this book. I hope that the soliders from this book are proud of what they did out in the battle field.
