Jo’s daughter changed everything, the moment their eyes met, Jo knew that she would be responsible for introducing the world to her child. What she exposes this baby to, will become normal to her. So, what will she do if her normal is not the normal she wants for this child?

In Silenced in Eden, Jo Lloyd Johnson takes readers on her journey to finding a new normal. A normal without patriarchy, dissociation, self-hatred, and sexual shame. As Jo began to question her indoctrination, she uncovered her childhood sexual abuse and how it has played a role in her view of herself and the world around her.

Silenced in Eden is a story of a mother’s love. Jo did not have the courage to change for herself, but she found the courage to change for her daughter.

This book is meant to be a voice for all who have been silenced and encourage others to speak their painful truths. Because of this, a dollar from each book sale will go to the nonprofit Louder Than Silence.

Louder Than Silence exists to provide survivors of sexual violence with the community and resources needed to gain hope and healing. They focus on paying for EMDR (trauma) therapy, hosting workshops and retreats, providing self-care kits, and much more. Their biggest dream is that survivors know that they are not alone and have a foundation of support among other survivors as they navigate their journeys together.

My first impression of both Jo and her book was dominated by one word: authentic. Jo comes from fundamentalist purity culture, a background that overlaps with my own. I resonated with many of the experiences in her brave shares on the page and found myself riveted by how she got out. It was fascinating to see the similarities between her recovery from religious abuse and her recovery from childhood sexual assault. Especially if you happen to be an exvangelical, you’ll find much to appreciate in Jo’s story.

I resonated with many aspects of Jo’s stories that she expounded on in Silenced in Eden. From the repression of my wants, needs, and preferences, as well as the repression of memories, to the journey out of a religious institution that benefits from that repression, I was reminded of my own parallel experiences. As I read, I was cheering Jo on as she saved herself and her children from the toxicity that harmed her.

I couldn’t put this book down. The imagery Jo has created is captivating, raw, and emotional. Her journey to self love has made me question my childhood trauma and road to healing. I feel we can all see ourselves in this story
