A quick, lifetime movie-ish story of toxic friends & relationships.

My first by this author. The writing was good, but I found the plot to be very predictable and a bit flimsy. She also covers some serious topics concerning fertility and pregnancy that the characters were dealing with.

I liked the protagonist, Jane and her husband Frankie. I felt a sadness for them as they struggled to start a family. Then, a new girl, Lexie Lane, is invited to join Jane and her besties group and she brings all the toxic energy, all the drama and jealousy. You can imagine where this is going.....

I did have a few lol moments, one with a reference to Sharon Stone (oh the visual) , but I saw all the twists coming and the ending was a bit cliched. Still entertaining if you're in the mood for something that doesn't require a lot of brain cells.

Thanks to NG and the publisher for my early copy/ OUT March 1, 2022

Lynes is fast becoming a new favorite author when it comes to psychological thrillers. She manages to really describe the psyche of its characters convincingly, and the emotion they feel seem authentic. This book touches upon trauma, infidelity, infertility and friendship but without not taking those themes seriously. I could feel the heartbreak and it came across by the authors ability to write poetically and truthful. The thrilling element was also there, but more subtle. The book would have worked no matter the twist, because every page was engaging and it egged me on. A brilliant work of art, and I can’t wait to read my next work by this magnificent author.

It all starts when Janes husband Frankie buys an expensive watch that makes him feel invincible. They both work their socks off, Frankie at his plumbing business and Jane at the successful café she owns in Wimbham. They’re happy though there’s also some sadness at what they can’t have. Jane has a small but good circle of friends, that is until Sophie introduces Lexie to the group. The watch, the baby shower for Sophie, and other unsettling events leads to everything catastrophically spiralling down and down into depths Jane never thought she and Frankie would sink into.

I knew I’d enjoy this one as SE Lynes rarely lets her readers down . It’s very well written, wry in places with some good touches of humour (usually Jane) that is until it’s not the least bit funny anymore and then it becomes intense and dark.

The novel has some very relevant themes such as true friendship versus the betrayal of it and how this can become something unbearably toxic from which relationships may never recover. It also features some gaslighting and bullying and demonstrates the impact they can have on self and those in your wider circle.

The dynamics are extremely well done both within marriage and in the friendship groups. The events really do make you feel something especially when Lexie is about, she is so easy to picture with all her materialism and masterful manipulation. Her Instagram account will tell you all you need to know about her.

As for the baby shower that really is something else and I’m sure I read those bits with my mouth attractively hanging open and probably with my fist clenching too. There is such of a range of emotions that are on display here from resentment to despair to hatred and back along to the opposite end of the spectrum. Frankie is a fool but he’s a likeable fool and though at times Jane’s mouth runs away with her, she too is very likeable.

There are some very good twists and turns a few that make your eyes pop although I did figure out what’s behind it all, it in no way impairs the enjoyment of this deliciously dark tale that is very hard to put down. Overall, this has a lot more meat and substance to it than other books in this genre.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Bookouture for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

Having never read anything by S.E. Lynes before, I have to say 'The Baby Shower' was one darn good curtain-raiser to her long-list of mystery thrillers. Jane and Sophie have been the best of friends forever, lots of joking and silliness on the periphery, but thick as thieves, a relationship disparate from all others, at least Jane thought it was.

From the first instant Lexie becomes acquainted at the weekly Friday night get together for drinks with the gang, I immediately thought there was the beginning of a chip to the normally amiable girls night out. Lexie acts like a dictator, commanding all the attention, and is frankly, quite rude. She acts like she has "private jokes" just between her and Sophie, and this despite the two of them barely knowing each other.

Make way for Natasha, further along into the plot and adding another (equally) disturbing twist to the storyline. It has often been said that nothing good comes to those who are money hungry, and for some reason atrocious people are pulled towards those people they assume have affluence.

Before I knew what was happening, it appeared as though Ms. Lynes had me virtually bamboozled as I was flipping through my Kindle pages at rapid-fire speed, in total shock at how adamant Sophie was in her refusal to believe Jane's misgivings and observations about Lexie. I so admired how Ms. Lynes retained the characters authenticity, consistently keeping their responses and feelings extremely believable.

I know from having many close and fleeting friendships over the years, how precarious they can be, especially when you have been close someone for years and years. It is not uncommon for it to become cumbersome when a new person throws the happy harmony into confusing disorder. The older we get the quicker we take into account that things are not always how they seem at face value. Jane is still young and has a bit of people-pleaser in her - not wanting to rock the boat for fear of losing her well established friendships. However, not all stories have a happily-ever-after, fairytale conclusion.

'The Baby Shower' was fabulous and provides lots of food for thought. It touches on bullying, materialism, shallowness, abuse, loyalty, and much more. Highly recommend.

Much thanks to Bookouture, NetGalley, and S.E. Lynes for the free download in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. #Bookouture, #NetGalley, #S.E.Lynes

“It all starts with the watch”

Jane Preston has a good job, a loving husband, and a close group of friends, that is until Lexie Lane shows up.

For reasons unbeknownst to her, Lexie has been trying to drive a wedge between Jane and her best friend Sophie. Sophie and Lexie’s friendship grows, but they become particularly close when they find out they are both are expecting. Jane is happy for her friend but she can’t help also feeling jealous. She wants nothing more than to have a baby and after numerous failed attempts, she discovers she is unable to conceive.

It all comes to a head at Sophie and Lexie’s joint baby shower. Jane gets through the affair with some liquid courage, and after awhile excuses herself to the bathroom. She overhears Lexie in a heated conversation with her boyfriend, and that’s when she sees something impossible! Lexie isn’t pregnant!

Simultaneously, Jane’s husband Frankie is busy fixing bathrooms and getting himself into ridiculous trouble.

This leads you down a rabbit hole of “Omg, whattt?!”, events and plot twists that will keep you talking long after you’ve finished reading.

I had so much fun reading this book! Lexie is the girl you love to hate and she really brings it. I loved the premise and the book did not disappoint.

That was bonkers, but in a chilling way and filled with, dare I say it, creeping menace. The story opens with 3 people in hospital after a hit and run accident. We know one of them is called Jane but we don’t know who the others are or any of the circumstances leading up to this. The story is told largely in the months preceding the accident (although accident is a bit of a misnomer) with snippets from the present day.

Jane Reece runs a coffee shop and loves her work. She is very happily married to Frank, a plumber. They are not wealthy but are comfortable enough. Jane’s one big regret is that, even after 3 rounds of IVF, it looks like she will never be able to have children. But she has a lovely group of friends - Sophie, Kath and Hils, who meet up regularly for Friday night drinks and join a larger group, Runner Beans, for a friendly bit of exercise.

One day Sophie announces she is pregnant again and then she brings a new friend, Lexie, to Friday drinks. This is the beginning of the end! Lexie monopolises Sophie, ignoring the others, while looking daggers at Jane whenever no one is watching. Jane can’t work out why. Things go from bad to worse as it becomes clear that Lexie is bad mouthing Jane to Sophie at every opportunity. And then, to rub salt into the wounds, Lexie announces that she, too, is pregnant. She insists on organising an appallingly extravagant baby shower for the two of them and engineering the whole thing to make Jane look bad. However, things are not as they seem so stay tuned!

Meanwhile, Jane’s rock, her dear husband Frankie, is somewhat missing in action and is not himself. This concerns her more than the likely loss of her friend Sophie. From here on the twists keep coming. Some of them are jaw dropping as you realise just how far some people will go to for revenge. For yes, dear friends - this is ultimately about revenge. The characterisations were really well done and I really liked Jane and Frankie, they were such a solid couple. Sophie showed herself to be very shallow and Lexie was, well, pure evil!

The pace was good throughout and there were no flat spots. In fact I was glued to the pages to find out what was going with the evil Lexie. It was so much worse that I could have imagined. Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

Est Page Count ~ 312
Audio length ~ 10 hours 33 minutes
Narrator ~ Tamsin Kennard

The prologue pulls you right in!

Jane and Frankie are our married couple narrators.

Jane, Sophie, Hils and Kath have been buddies for years until Sophie brings a 5th woman to the group, Lexie. Right from the start Jane and Lexie butt heads and have she said/she said shenanigans going on. This puts Jane and Sophie's BFFness on the rocks.

Jane and Frankie are unable to have children, so when Sophie and Lexie announce they're pregnant, Jane can't help to feel a wee bit sad. Bring on the baby shower and tensions rise and secrets and lies are revealed.

Okay, so I totally had every little twist figured out ~ you can even ask my family because I yelled it out to them. It's making me think I am reading too many thrillers, BUT I still very much enjoyed it. Totally gave me HS mean girl vibes a few times, even though these ladies are in their 30's. Holy drama drama drama!

Cheers, Mate, to the bloody brilliant British lingo.
It was a fast paced, psychological thrilling ride and I'll be sure to read her work again.

Narration notes:
I did not listen to this one, but am just giving the info above for reference.

There is always that one friend...…

Ever belong to a group of friends and you just don't mesh with another?

Jane and her husband, Frankie have been trying to have a baby, but it doesn't seem to be in the cards for them, so when she finds out that her friend, Sophie is pregnant, the news while happy, hurts a little. Then Sophie meets Lexie and invites her into their peer group and guess what!?! Lexi is pregnant too. What better way to celebrate than to have a joint baby shower!

Jane can't quite put her finger on it, but there is something about Lexie that doesn't seem right. She sounds friendly but her eyes are menacing when she looks at Jane. Then there is Frankie, he works so hard for them but lately he has not been himself.

This was a fast fun read that kept me wondering what was behind those evil eyes, what was going on with Frankie and why was Sophie so quick to disbelieve a friend she has known for a long time and believe someone she just met.

I felt a little juvenile while reading this because I kept thinking "liar, liar pants on fire!"

This book deals with friendship, marriage, pregnancy, difficulty conceiving, lies, deception, secrets, and loyalty.

S.E. Lynes does not disappoint, and this book is no exception.

Well well. This had my juices running and my mind all over the place.
I really got into this one so much I didn’t want to sleep I just wanted more.
It’s been a while since I read a book by this author. Why?
Yes why, I hear you ask.

I don’t know! So many books I guess. I’ve never been disappointed so I really need to catch up.

The (let us say) “villain” in this book had me jumping off my seat so many times. And as regards one of the characters I thought she needed a wake up call. The “new girl” on the horizon and the “old” one has to take a back seat…..or so I thought, then suddenly, yes suddenly I was gasping the night of THE BABY SHOWER. …heck, what!

Really really good!

I need a copy for my physical shelf as this is a high profile book that I loved.

Where to start? A friend had told me how good this book was and having read all the authors previous books I knew it would be but this book captured me and kept me from page 1
It is a multi layered story surrounding 2 best friends and what happens when someone infiltrates that friendship but it covers so much more including adult bullying, envy, buying friendships plus the author has been extremely brave and tackled a taboo subject that is not often spoke about openly ( cant say what or else will ruin the story ) all sensitive subjects are handled really well and are thought provoking
Character wise…..we meet Lexie, the new ‘friend’, the infiltrator, she is someone I had one of my strongest reactions ( to a character in a book ) ever to, the author has created a monster 🤗 and I loathed every scheming thing she did, honestly she is soooo bad ( which of course makes her soooo good to read about )
The story grabs you, the writing keeps you hooked and it really doesn’t let up until the last sentence
Everything about it is brilliant and without doubt will be one of my favourite reads this year, I will not forget it or the characters nor the themes covered, superb in every way

My definition of a trashy thriller means that there’s a bit of implausibility, some of the characters might be vapid, and it’s the kind of book that you read not because it’s mindful or brilliant, but because it’s just fun. This is for the most part what I’d call a trashy thriller, and it was definitely fun to read!

The synopsis is vague for a reason … the entire book is full of spoilers, twists and turns. We know our protagonist sees that someone is faking a pregnancy, but when the book gets going, you soon realize it’s not that simple. There is more than one pregnant woman in this story - who is the faker, and why is she faking?

That sounds simple, but there’s so much more that can’t really be shared. There are bits of thoughts from a woman who is in the hospital, and when reading those bits interspersed throughout the book, you’re left to wonder who it is. There are a few other plot points added in as well, like infidelity and how precarious adult friendships can be. As the author mentions in the notes, this story shows how friendships can break your heart just as easily as a romantic relationship can.

I’m still not sure what I think about the ending. Overall, I liked it and didn’t see it coming, but it still felt a bit predictable (even though I didn’t predict it). It was nice and tidy, so I think it’s not really to be analyzed - this is, after all, mostly a trashy thriller. All I wanted was to be entertained, and I wasn’t disappointed there. Four stars for this very enjoyable story.

Another addictive, unputdownable thriller by author S. E. Lynes. Even though I did manage to guess the big twist, this tale of revenge and toxic friendships kept me hooked until the end. I found our main character, Jane, to be both likable and relatable. Jane is pretty content with her life. She has a successful business, a devoted husband, and a supportive friend group. However, all that changes when Sophie, one of the friends from the group, invites Lexie to join their group. Lexi is rich, glamorous, and seems to have it in for Jane. From taking digs at her appearance to creating misunderstandings between Jane and Sophie, it's clear to Jane that Lexi dislikes her but why? Is this a case of petty playground politics or does she have something more sinister up her sleeve?

Aside from all the twists and turns, I really loved the friendship between Jane and her friends (not Sophie of course) and her relationship with her husband. I thought the author did a wonderful job of writing and developing those relationships. There are a few topics discussed in this book, however, the one that sticks out the most is the issue of male consent and sexual assault. This particular topic plays a big role in the story so please keep that in mind when going into it.

Overall, I thought this was a gripping and well-written read. The twist about Lexi was predictable in my opinion but I enjoyed the ride and I appreciate the author for tackling an issue that isn't very talked about. This is my favorite book by S. E. Lynes so far. I look forward to reading more.

The Baby Shower is a fast paced thriller that is very entertaining and had me hooked instantly. “How much we want to say sometimes. How little makes it out of our mouths.” Never underestimate the power of revenge and the hold it can have over someone’s soul. Betrayal, jealousy and paranoia become a deadly combination as loyalty is tested and lives appear to be shattered forever. What a tangled web we weave. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy.

Another very good read courtesy of S.E Lynes who I always find so consistently good. A riveting read that gripped me very early on and teased me throughout with the well paced plot. Characters that virtually had me screaming at the pages and even though I just about had it figured out proved to be another excellent read from this author.

A novel about female friends, their relationships, rivalry, deception and lots more.

The lead character is Jane who longs for a baby with her husband Frankie. They share a very happy life but the one thing she wants to put the icing on the cake is a child. Time is running out for the couple as they try to have the baby they dearly want. Jane has a group of friends she enjoys socialising with, but her very best pal is Sophie. When Sophie announces she is pregnant Jane expresses her happiness for her but cannot help feeling sad for her own problems. The four friends enjoy evenings out and everyone gets on well until another friend of Sophie, Lexie joins the group. Lexie is not shy and is certainly not going to be kept in the shadows. Before long Lexie is a very big part of the group and appears to be trying to upset the tight friendship between Jane and Sophie. Lexie appears to be a great friend to the others while upsetting Jane where ever possible and pushing herself between Jane and Sophie.

The problem is only Jane sees the evil side of Lexie and when Jane speaks of it she appears to be paranoid and emotional. The situation escalates further and Sophie and Jane are getting pushed further apart, culminating in a tense climax.
Great characters and a cleverly written plot make this a real page turner.

Bestie bust-ups - we’ve all been there. They hurt, don’t they? Because they aren’t romantic in nature, they are considered pain free causing society to put pressure on us women to move on and get over it already! Lynes writes to show us why they cause so much emotional strife and pain.

S. E. Lynes drew her inspiration from alt-pop music artist James Blake’s newest album, ‘Friends That Break Your Heart,’ that explores the grief accompanying waning friendships. The author explored why petty aggression from a friend is so difficult to handle and what it takes to get a friendship to the breaking point. In doing so, she examines her protagonist’s formative years to show readers the perfect environment that leads to Jane’s victimhood. She also highlights how learning to stand up to adult bullying, stand up for herself and accept her circumstances is important for Jane’s personal growth. The audience sees more than Sophie does and it enrages them, thereby propelling the plot. We all want vindication and we want to see justice served.

Lynes also examines the effects of materialism on relationships and questions whether a true friend could be able to like or love someone without judgment or demands. You’ll read about the true cost of an extravagant self-purchase and conclude, beyond a doubt, that it wasn’t worth the heartache it caused.

This psychological thriller highlights female rivalry and deception caused when one or more of the group feels it can’t compete with the status quo…in this case, pregnancy. The fearsome foursome’s claws come out when motherhood isn’t achievable for all.

I appreciate the twists and turns in Lynes plots and always look forward to a nail-biting read. Although this one was a little close for comfort, it still gripped me and I needed to frantically turn pages to find out what would happen next. I am always confident that Lynes will entertain me, pose thought-provoking scenarios, write relatable characters facing relatable issues and leave me hungry for her next read.

I was gifted this advance copy by S. E. Lynes, Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4

She doesn't know I'm there, watching her in the mirror. She slides her hand under her blouse. And then I see something impossible. She isn't pregnant....

She bursts into my life like a storm, and nothing is the same again. She seems so perfect with her lilting laugh and her beautiful face. One by one, I watch as my friends fall under her spell. Only I seem to suspect something. Only I see that her smiles don't reach her cold, furious eyes. And when I'm accused of things I didn't do, when my home is vandalised, I know she's behind it. But she only lets her mask slip when no one is looking.

Secrets, lies, toxic relationships, this book has it all. The curve balls come at you from all angles. The characters are believable, relatable, but not very likeable. The story is told from Jane and Frankie's perspective. There's parts that are pretty predictable and a little far fetched. The pace is slow to begin with then it gets more of a steady one. This is a quick and easy book to read.

Jane is sad when her best friend Sophie finds a new friend Lexie. Jane who is unable to have children is further shaken when Sophie and Lexie announce that are both pregnant. To make matters worse Lexie is causing trouble by telling lies about a Jane.
There are lots of secrets going on behind closed doors.
This was an enjoyable read but a little predictable. I guessed the ending quite early on.

So, I really liked our main character and loved her husband.

The book is mildly interesting - the problem is that there's no suspense. I mean, you know the *who* of everything right away. It's in a hit-you-over-the-head kind of way. You also figure out what the *who* is doing pretty quickly.

The only mystery is the *why*...and our why is kind of prosaic.

The book is okay. It did keep me reading, if only to see if I was right. And I was. Every. Single. Time.

Jane Reece has a pretty great life. She's running a successful coffee shop, married to a hardworking and dedicated man and has a group of supportive friends. Jane is particularly grateful for her best friend, Sophie. They have been by each other's sides though thick and thin. Sophie even helped Jane through her issues with and subsequent depression from infertility. But when Sophie reveals that she's pregnant, they're relationship is thrown off kilter. Jane is happy for her friend, but is also struggling with jealousy.
Then enters Lexie Lane. She is glamorous, she is rich and she is pregnant-all the things that Jane isn't. Lexie's arrival further deepens the chasm between Jane and Sophie, and the deterioration of this friendship is devastating for Jane. More devastating still is that no one believes her when she says Lexie is trying to destroy her life. But is Lexie the villain here? Or is Jane making all this up in a bid to keep her friends close?

This may be my favorite book by Lynes to date. The characters and their relationships were so well done and displayed a great deal of emotional depth. Watching a once loving and supportive friendship deteriorate into toxicity was heartbreaking.
Additionally, I wanted to keep reading to find out what the motives for doing this were. Is Lexie really evil? Or is Jane paranoid and mentally unstable? I couldn't wait to find out!

I also appreciate this novel tackling issues that aren't often discussed in books (or society for that matter) such as the toxicity of female relationships and male consent.
While women are more often the victims of sexual abuse/violence, it's so important to remember that men can also be victims of this terrible crime.

Jane Preston has a good friend, Sophie, then Lexie Lane rocks up. Jane's great life includes a great job, a loving husband, and a close group of friends, besides Sophie. Sophie falls pregnant and Jane is thrilled for her close pal but is sad, too, as she and her husband Frankie have been desperate for a child for a long while. When Sophie invites enigmatic and materialistic Lexie into their friendship circle, Jane's world is upended...

As a habitual reader of novels by Susie Lynes, I couldn't wait to get started on this novel set in south London. It was equally as good as the others I've read, and I found it captivating. The heart-thumping tale is artfully narrated through multiple viewpoints in the present day and via flashbacks to previous weeks. The clarity of Susie Lynes's writing made it an easy storyline to follow, and the evenly paced and tense plot went down a treat. The author's writing is of a variety that any thriller fan can appreciate -first class - and she was able to create a tone of intensity that continued until the very last page. There are some very good twists and a few will make your jaw drop. A mesmerising and riveting deliciously dark story. 😊

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Jane and Sophie are best friends with a great relationship. However, Sophie soon meets Lexie and, before long, Sophie and Lexie seemingly have no room for Jane. In fact, things soon become toxic. Then there is the fact that both Sophie and Lexie are now pregnant, which is something that Jane desperately has wanted but it just has not happened, even with fertility treatments.

Reluctantly, Jane agrees to attend a lavish dual baby shower for Sophie and Lexie. This really hurts Jane but she does want to support Sophie. From the start, however, Lexie clearly does not like Jane and makes her feel uncomfortable at every turn. There is clearly a case of adult bullying with how Lexie treats Jane and this leads to eroding the relationship between Jane and Sophie. Jane can see right through Lexie - Sophie, not so much.

While at the exclusive baby shower, Jane discovers that Lexie is not pregnant. While trying to decide how to handle this shocking discovery, another plot is being sharply developed in this gripping story. This plot actually involves Jane’s husband Frank and how he actually crossed paths with Lexie. This brings on an extra layer to an already engaging read.

While there is an air of predictability in this story, it does not lessen the intensity this story so sharply delivers. Instead, the need to see how everything will work out was more than enough to make this book impossible to put down. While this book does touch on some sensitive, possibly triggering subjects, they are handled with serious consideration making this book utterly compelling read.

With surprising twists and turns, drama delivered in both past and present tense, The Baby Shower kept me riveted from beginning to end. Kudos to Ms. Lynes for delivering a multi-layered story that did not shy away from serious topics.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

This book was predictable at EVERY single turn. Dialogue terrible, characters annoying as hell (seriously, the whole I’m going to believe this new person in my life instead of my friend of 5 years scenario always pisses me off. The only good thing the MC did was tell her ex bff to fuck off when she came to say “lol damn you were right but it’s all about meeee”). Plot twists were not surprising at all. I figured the twists out within the first two chapters. IDK why the author even put the stuff about the fake pregnancy in the synopsis because that would have been the only thing to save this book since all other twists were dumb. I started skimming A LOT just to finish this. I want to speak to the manager to have my time and $6 returned for this book.

I’m a bit of an outlier here but this book is very bad.
The plot is so boring and outlandish, the writing is cringeworthy, the characters are all caricatures and the epilogue is without doubt the stupidest ending I’ve ever read.
Such a lot of hype in order to sell what is, essentially, a book which should have been remaindered long before it was published. S. E. Lynes (gender????) obviously hates women, I’ve never read such misogynistic twaddle.
Nil points, nada.

I am excited to be taking part in the #BooksOnTour #BlogTour for S.E. Lynes' addictive new domestic thriller THE BABY SHOWER.

OMG...this book is like a tornado! A storm that unleashes a tsunami of emotions, wreaking havoc for the duration and leaving a trail of detritus in its wake. But no meterologist could predict the damage Hurricane Lexie would bring. I wasn't even ready for it and I was expecting it! The woman is a nightmare! And she is one thing I hate...toxic.

It all starts with a watch. But not just any watch. An expensive £3000 Breitling that Frankie buys with the proceeds of a win on the scratchies. Instead of adding it to "the jar" towards their dream of a world trip, the coveted Breitling puts Frankie in a league with his friends who sport Tag Hauers, making him feel invincible. But as the old adage goes...be careful what you wish for. For the Breitling is only the start of things to come.

Jane Preston is married to Frankie Reece and, feminist that she is, kept her name as a nod to the sisterhood of independent women the world over. She has built a lucrative coffee shop from the ground up and despite being a trained accountant, Frankie retrained as a heating engineer and has his own successful plumbing business. The couple are happy and yet their lives are tinged with a little sadness for what could never be. But still, they have each other. And their friends.

When her best friend Sophie tentatively announces she is pregnant, Jane goes through a gamut of emotions. She is happy for Sophie but devastated for herself. She shares nothing of her feelings with her other two friends Hils and Kathy, who are older and have "been there, done that, got the t-shirt" with regards to children. She doesn't even confide in Frankie at first, giving him only the bare minimum of details so as to spare his feelings. As far as things go, Jane is coping relatively well with the news...until Lexie Lane shows up.

Young, vibrant and totally new, Lexie is invited to their weekly running group Running Beans and subsequently their Friday night drinks at the pub after meeting Sophie at the gym. Obviously used to being the centre of attention, Lexie dominates the conversation as well as Sophie leaving Jane feeling a little left out. But Sophie is doing what Sophie does...taking the newbie under her wing and making her feel welcome just as did with her all those years ago. But then Sophie doesn't catch the momentary glare directed at Jane. She doesn't see the looks, the smirks or the veiled whispers meant only for Jane. Sophie only sees what Lexie wants her to see, leaving Jane in a quandary. Does she say something and risk further wrath? Or does she just lay low and avoid Lexie's love-bombing as much as she can?

And then the following week, Lexie has some news of her own. She too is expecting as Sophie squeals with delight that the two of them are pregnant together. Inevitably the two women bond and the closer Sophie and Lexie grow, the more certain Jane is that Lexie is trying to drive a wedge between her and her best friend. To say something now will only make her seem jealous.

Things come to a head when Lexie throws a joint baby shower for her and Sophie. But not just any baby shower...a £4000 a night plus extras at the Ritz! Only the best for Sophie who was robbed of the chance of a baby shower the first time round. Not wanting to put herself through more of "the Sophie and Lexie show", Jane forces herself to be there for her friend who seems to be slipping further and further away from her. But things go from bad to worse from the beginning, orchestrated by Lexie to throw Jane in a bad light. Forcing herself to endure the whole thing for Sophie's sake with the help of an entire bottle of Bach's Rescue Remedy and liquid courage, she then excuses herself to go to the bathroom for some time out and to regroup. But then she overhears a heated phone conversation Lexie is having with her apparently devoted boyfriend which sounds more demanding than loved-up. And then she sees something impossible and that's when she knows...Lexie isn't pregnant! Unable to stomach any more, Jane makes her escape rushing home in tears.

Meanwhile, Frankie has his own problems going on which all started with that wretched watch. Whilst busy fixing bathrooms and toilets, things go from bad to worse when he just seems to be sinking further and further into the proverbial s***! He works longer and longer hours and the once happy couple are more like ships passing in the night. Jane becomes concerned for her husband particularly when he doesn't appear to be himself.

Peppered throughout are the interspersed chapters of an unnamed woman in hospital having been involved in a hit and run. We know there were three people involved but as to who they are and how it all eventuated is not made clear until towards the end. There were some clues drip-fed throughout which I picked up on immediately.

Admittedly, I saw all the twists coming and guessed them long before they were revealed but that didn't spoil my enjoyment of this twisted tale of revenge. Yes, Lexie got under my skin but surprisingly, not as much as Sophie did. Sophie, who has known Jane and been her best friend for years; who took the word of the relatively unknown Lexie over her long established friendship with Jane; who believed Lexie rather than her best friend; who was basically willing to ditch that long standing friendship with her best friend in favour of someone new. Sophie's behaviour angered me that she could take the word of someone she's known five minutes over her best friend, and then to confront Jane citing her as the "bad guy". What is wrong with this woman? If that's how she treats her friends then Jane was better off without her. Sophie was welcome to Lexie, in my opinion, and vice versa.

But I loved Jane and Frankie. They were sweet and solid...and so not ready for Hurricane Lexie. I would have loved to see a little more banter with Hils and Kath, particularly where Lexie and Sophie were concerned, but I also understood Jane's reasoning behind why she wouldn't engage in such. But what there was, I enjoyed. I love dry wit and wry humour and this book was filled with it, despite it tapering off as the impact of what was happening began to take affect. And a shout out to the adoreable Des who is not as stupid as his humans think him to be...

A slow-build at first, THE BABY SHOWER is a fast paced thriller about toxic friendships and revenge. Addictive and unputdownable, this twisted tale kept me up long into the night and the wee hours until I finally finished it at 5am.

When I started this book, I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did...considering it featured toxic women, which I loathe and really gets under my skin. I don't care that it was predictable or that I guessed every twist coming. I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish and, for me, that's what it's all about. The ride; the thrill of the chase; the adrenaline. I loved it. One of my favourite Susie Lynes books to date, I should think.

A deliciously dark tale, THE BABY SHOWER is very hard to put down and is perfect for fans of domestic or psychological thrillers who love tense twisted tales highlighting the toxicity in female friendships.

I would like to thank #SELynes, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheBabyShower in exchange for an honest review.

I foolishly start this this on Wednesday night planning to read a few chapters, I should have known that with this author sleep was never going to happen - I finished it at some blearly point during the early hours of Thursday and it's taken over a week for me to put my thoughts in order to attempt a review.

With a title far simpler than it's content The Baby Shower ticks all my boxes for a page turning psychological thriller. As expected the writing is superb, the characters are wonderfully drawn and their thoughts and emotions shine through. This book has an undercurrent of menace, toxic characters and many twists in the plot, all of which are brilliant and would have left me more than satisfied BUT this had so much more depth and can be read on two levels.

For me the other, deeper level was an exploration of the value of friendships and relationships and the many factors which can break or nurture them; who and when to trust and when to let someone go or to act with your gut insticts and forgive; that the events of your past can shape your future in the least expected ways.

Whilst the heartbreak of a romatic involvement ending is a topic of general discussion the gut wrenching pain of the loss of (or betrayal by) a good friend is rarely talked about . My insides were churning with Jane's bewilderment, self doubt and rage. Bullying wrecks lives but it is rarely as obvious as a thump, the snidey comments, gaslighting, ridiculing then pretending it was a joke making you wonder if you are losing your perspective, making you doubt yourself and eroding your confidence.

When confidence is low you can end up coveting the things that don't matter and end up risking everything which does. Our Instagram society can make us think that someone has everything when in reality they are sad, lonely and broken and the online adulation is the only thing they have. The author explores an issue of sexual consent I haven’t read before, this event and the subsequent fallout is central to the story and imo extremely well handled.

Which ever level you read on, be it the fabulous psychological thriller or the deeper human factors I hope you love this one as much as I did. This is a seriously outstanding book - unreserved 5 stars, I'd give it a million if I could.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and give my honest thoughts on this cracking book.

This was a quick read, centered on Jane, who is frustrated when her best friend Sophie makes a new friend who is mean and throws off the dynamic of the group. Her husband, Frankie, is also dealing with his own issues, and both are struggling with the fact that they are unable to get pregnant.

The story moves at a fast pace but is somewhat predictable. There were a couple surprises, though. When the villain’s motivations were revealed, I felt that the reasons didn’t really match with the actions. I also felt frustrated with Jane, who felt like she had to be a martyr instead of just telling people how she was feeling. I was satisfied with how it all ended, though.

Overall, fun read but not sure it really stands out amongst similar stories. I’d give it 3.5 stars. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The protagonist, Jane, is part of a running group, Runner Beans, along with friends Sophie, Kath and Hils, but Sophie’s new friend, Lexie, doesn't like Jane, and Jane suspects it’s because she wants to be Sophie’s new best friend.
As it becomes more obvious to Jane that Lexie doesn’t like her, she struggles to hold onto her friendship with Sophie, as Lexie makes it seem like Jane has a vendetta against her.

My thoughts
I was pacing the floor with anticipation... I couldn’t stop reading. (I may or may not have tripped over the cat... he's ok btw). ^..^
The suspense elements of this story hold tight, and make for a compulsive read. It was a well-crafted and satisfying read. I’d definitely recommend reading this book if you’re a fan of a story that looks behind the façade of relationships and human motivation.
SE Lynes did an amazing job with some very serious themes such as consent and infertility, while keeping the tone of ‘The Baby Shower’ light with moments of humor that made me smile.

I started this book on a whim after seeing it on a "Best Books of Spring" list (and it was only 99 cents on Kindle!). It was fantastic! I found Jane to be such a relatable character, and I was really rooting for her. Lynes did an excellent job of examining friendship dynamics and the topic of gaslighting. The story is told through dual perspectives of Jane and Frankie. There are also chapters peppered throughout the book from the POV of an unnamed woman in the hospital after a hit-and-run accident, and I was so curious to see how that was connected! The Baby Shower was simply unputdownable, suspenseful, and I loved the unexpected witty humor and sarcasm. While I guessed one of the twists, that didn't hinder my enjoyment, and there were other surprises. Obviously, there is a trigger warning for infertility, but the other major trigger might be a spoiler, so feel free to message me (I will say that nothing in the book is graphic, which I always appreciate). S.E. Lynes has several other suspense novels published, and I can't wait to check them out!
