Everwinter #1

Dragon's Secret

Rate this book
A never-ending winter ... a stolen magic ... a hidden identity. What secrets does the enchanting sorcerer keep within his winter castle?

When the Shift tore open the veil between our reality and the hidden one, the world as we knew it ended. Now, magic is real, but advanced technology has long been lost to history. In the ever-frozen land of Norðurey, a new civilization thrives amidst the ruins of the Dead World.

All my life, I’ve aspired to become one of the most learned magic users in the realm—that was why I came to the High College of Magi in the first place. Finally, I’ve graduated from junior to senior mage, but before I can enjoy my newfound privileges, my headmistress gives me a special task: travel to the island of an exiled wizard and convince him to accept me as his apprentice.

My journey is long and perilous, as a massive dragon seems to stalk my path … but upon my arrival, the wizard’s company is no reprieve. Amon is unlike any man I’ve ever met. His demands and glacial eyes hold a dark seduction, yet he keeps me at arm’s length, as solitary and cold as the ancient castle in which he dwells.

But if the castle is as isolated as he claims, why do I keep hearing screams in the night? …And why do I suspect that Amon is connected to the dragon who threatened my life?

If I can uncover the secrets of the ice-bound castle and melt the heart of its master, it could mean achieving my life’s goal. Or, it could end my life entirely.

This is the first book in the Everwinter Series, a trilogy inspired by Icelandic mythology and dragons. It is a slow-burn, angst-filled fantasy romance with a dark twist, and pulls inspiration from Beauty and the Beast, Phantom of the Opera, and Gothic romance. The steaminess increases as the series progresses.

*SPOILER-FREE REVIEW*

This book is about a College Mage Magdelne who was sent by the headmistress of the college, Headmistress Aur to go to become an apprentice to an exiled wizard.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT:
*This read gave me D&D vibes, which differed greatly from what I've read. The storytelling, I found, parallels that of how a "dungeon master" would run a campaign.
*The author was very descriptive regarding the world - good world-building & set up.
*There is so much potential in the plot to develop. There was a lot of really good information set up.

SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER:
*if you aren't very familiar with Dungeons and Dragons lingo, you might struggle with following the story - the magic system may be something that can be difficult to understand. I'm familiar with them, but still, some ideas went over my head.
*There was quite a bit of information dump for the reader. And oftentimes, I struggled to connect them to each other and the story.
*It took about 50% of the book to get some sort of a "hook." - which could be hard for those who like a faster pace.
*Im not sure whether there is supposed to be an enemies-to-lover trope in here; it seemed like there would be, but unfortunately, there wasn't enough tension for me to discern (which made it hard for me to really picture the relationship between the MCs)
*I wish there would have been more scenes or interactions between the FMC and MMC to really let their relationship develop. Perhaps as the series progress, we will see more of this.
*I feel like I didn't really get to know the characters at a much deeper level. Again, this could be that we are going to learn more about them as the series progress.
*some of the backstories could be stronger - again, these backstories could potentially be unfolded in the next books.

OVERALL
This kind of read is not what I'm looking for right now; hence, I only gave it 2.5 stars out of 5. This series has *a lot* of potential in terms of the plot. I think the story will unfold as the series progress. This book had a lot of information that was given to the reader and, unfortunately, could feel like a lot to some people (as the author noted, the story will unfold as the series progress). Which, for me, is where it also gives me a D&D vibe. If you've ever played D&D, you know how long certain parts can take, and certain revelations take time. I think this is where it might feel like the story is dragging for those unfamiliar with how the storytelling in a D&D campaign goes.

As I said, this type of storytelling isn't what Im looking for right now. However, if you are someone who loves this sort of pacing and doesn't mind all the information in the first book and enjoys the world-building, then this read may be for you.

"But not everything existed to be taken."

This is a great start to The Everwinter Series! The concept of a dead world and technology being lost to civilization was so well executed. This story held my attention, the characters were complex and interesting, and I'm thrilled to see what happens next!

▪︎Entertaining and quick read
▪︎Full of mythological creatures and magic
▪︎Slow burn
▪︎Mystery packed

I found this book to very entertaining. My favorite character is the Dragon. Is that weird? Magdelne surly did have her work cut for when she came to head with this beast. Amon has a lot of answers to give to Magdelne. The writer definitely captured my attention when regards to all the action Magdelne was faced with. Show out to having a young woman as the heroine to the story. The book was easy to read. I love the excitement from the characters. Well Amon proved to hard to even lift the corner of his mouth for a smile. The story is a fast paced book, however the writer kept the dialogue moderate and the stories narrative simple and to the point. I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

wonderful read and intro to the series

☆☆☆☆☆ 🌶️
First, wow! I was having a hard time deciding what book to pick and have never been so relieved as when I finished this. This book is written beautifully. It is original. It has fantasy, dragons, magic, a touch of dystopian themes, adventure, romance, everything. The main character is relatable as she struggles to find herself and figure out what she has been thrust into. Overall, highly recommend! Can’t wait for book two!

Rating- 4.5 stars I loved this book!

The world that we know no longer exists. The Shift tore open our world and revealed a hidden one where magic rules. Now, the advanced technology we once relied upon is gone and magic is real and rules the world. Magdelene attends the High College of Magi and longs to be a powerful wielder of magic, with her specialty being Arcane Theory. Finally her wish has come true and she graduates from junior to senior mage.

Before she can fully appreciate the fact that her dream has just come true, the headmistress gives her a special task, to travel to an island inhabited by an exiled wizard and convince him to accept her as his apprentice, something he apparently rarely does, the hopefuls usually get turned away and are never heard from again.

Magdelene suffers many hardships on her long journey to the wizard’s castle, including being stalked by a giant dragon. Once at the wizard’s castle, she is surprised when he agrees to make her his apprentice. But despite his acceptance he is still cold and distant and full of secrets, which Magdelene is determined to uncover, but at what cost>

I loved this book! It was full of fantasy, dragons, magic, mystery, a little bit of a dystopian element and a little bit of romance. I loved the main character and her strong will. She thought she knew what she wanted from life and what she was destined for, but more time spend in the cold castle with an even colder man that may not be exactly what he says he is and that she still can’t help being attracted to has her searching within herself to find out who she truly is and what she really wants to be.

The author has a fantastic writing style, and this book sucked me in immediatly and held my interest and attention through the whole thing! This is the first book in a trilogy and I look forward to reading the next two and seeing how the story plays out!

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy, mystery and magic!

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest review.

I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to the author, and Booksprout for allowing me the privilege of being able to read this book. I truly appreciate it!

I was so excited to be able to read the 'Dragons Secret', fair warning though, I do unintentionally know how this series will end, as I read one of her heart-wrenching novellas recently released in 'Bewitched Blooms'. However that didn't stop me from being pulled into this world and wanting to read where it all began, and I'm so excited that I was finally able too!

First and foremost I have to say, there is a twist in this book, that yes I guessed right away, however my squeals of utter joy when it was confirmed was everything!! I was worried at first that I might be wrong and it might end up being a love triangle (knowing how it all ends) but then when is all even more shockingly was revealed it was perfect!! All I want to do is gush and go on about all that happens but I can't because I don't want to spoil the unputdownable ride that is this book!

What at the very least I can say is this, Isla Elrick has created yet another immersive world you're not going to want to leave. You will feel as though your on this adventure too, you will feel giddy and joyful, you'll swoon at so many moments, you'll want to cry in heartbreaking moments and you'll be on the edge of your seat through the whole book. Her main character Magdelne is the embodiment of most of us, despite the setting she feels so real. Seeing her come into her own, and all that she goes through was so magical! And Heptep, I loved him so much he was perfect!I wouldn't change a thing about this book other then it needs to be everywhere, and I can't wait to read the second, the third and the other novellas in this series!

Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart again for allowing me the privilege of being able to read this book! I loved it!

The Dragon’s Secret is the first book in Isla Elrick’s the Everwinter series and this one tale of intrigue that you’re not going to want to miss out on.
Dragon’s Secret takes readers deep into a fantasy world where the world that we know is no more. The Shift happened and shook up everything. The Shift tore open the veil between our world and another, and magic was unleashed. Technology? Lost. Everything we know? Lost. But a new civilization and way of life have thrived in these losses.
Ready to meet Magdelne. She’s just graduated from being a junior mage to being a senior one. She’s preparing to further her studies but her headmistress has other plans for her. Magdelne is offered the opportunity to go and study under the tutelage of an exiled wizard. There’s no guarantees he’ll take her in, since he’s rejected others before her, but nothing ventured nothing gained. Right?
The journey there is not going to be an easy one, what with a dragon seemingly stalking her. Throw in a troll and other dangers and you’ve got quite the story unfolding! What Magdelne finds when she finally reaches the wizard’s castle is far from what she expected.
The Dragon’s Secret is an engaging fantasy romance novel that quickly draws you in with promises of gothic themes with some Beauty and the Beast thrown in. It all blends together to create a fascinating story with a quest to stop a winter magic that is creeping across the lands.
This slow-burn fantasy romance series is one that will draw you in and leave you eager for what happens next in book two.

Magic and Dragons

I pretty much one click for dragon shifter books. Add in some magic and other fantasy creatures, and you have my attention.
Magdelne is a college aged mage sent to apprentice for a castaway wizard and finds more than she bargained for. She goes from wanting to learn more about arcane magic to setting her sights on completing a different quest.
Epiphron is a dragon shifter on the run. He escaped from a century of servitude and is just trying to find a way home.
Some of the banter in this book was good and there are a few more eccentric characters. I thought the chemistry between Mag and Epiphron was mediocre at best, so their intimate scene was just alright. The scene was written well, but didn’t blow me away.
I also felt like there was too much going on this book. Everything from Mag having a suspiciously large amount of arcane magic, Epiphron being tricked out of his homeland and kept out with the Everwinter (which is now leading to more widespread consequences), Epiphron also trying to lay low so his previous master doesn’t find him, to Amon giving them the idea about the box. Mag also suspects she was sent to Amon as a spy for the college. It was just a lot to introduce in the first book.
Overall, it was a good book and I may read the next book, mostly for curiosities surrounding Epiphron. I just love dragon shifters and he’s suffered a lot, so I’d like to see him get revenge and maybe love.

"I could not shake the feeling that this journey was the beginning of something much greater."

"The remnants of their civilization a constant reminder that the earth did not belong to us humans."

"But not everything existed to be taken."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶🌶

A lovely introduction to a romantasy series. I was expecting part of the twist but not the full extent. I love a good and unpredictable twist. Magdelne is an ambitious and strong FMC who believes in herself fiercely, almost to a fault. I liked her character a lot. Epiphron is an interesting and complex character that I also loved. I found myself rooting for him throughout the book. Amon is an insufferable being, which I can't stand, but that's part of the point of his character. I sure hope to see more of Magdelne's best friend, Jaiden, in future books in the series. He was a small flitting character, but he was my favorite.

The amount of detail used was good, and I found no plot holes. I can't wait to continue this series and find what happens next. The ending had me a bit shocked, and I'm so excited to see Epiphron reclaim some of his spark. The romance in this was a super long slow burn.

My heat rating is based on the amount of occurrence, length of scenes, and how filthy/unconventional the scenes are. This rates very low on the scale with 1 explicit scene. I give it 2/5 🌶.

The story starts off a at college for magi. The FMC, Magdelene, becomes a senior mage and is sent off to train under a wizard on a far-off island. When she arrives on the island it isn’t what she expected. The man she encounters is intriguing and creates a pull towards him that she is having a hard time understanding or resisting. But things are not what they seem.
The MMC is an enigma and wrapped in so many secrets that Magdelene wasn’t sure what to expect. During the course of the story I really enjoyed the character’s and their growth. The world building is very unique and I love that there is an adventure happening that keeps the book moving at a quick rate.
The story ends on a cliff hanger, that leaves you ready and waiting for the next book. The feelings that are experienced just make you want to find out more and more about the characters and what they have and are going to experience.
I received an ARC of this book for free. I am voluntarily leaving a review.

The story follows Mag - a mag studying arcane theory who is appointed a senior mage and told to journey to the wizards tower in order to secure an apprenticeship.
On her way, she encounters a dragon, not once, but twice - and once saving her life.

The story is set in a post-apoc type system where magic was introduced through tears in reality. Dragons and other creatures ending up on earth. At this point, there are remnants of a tech advanced society, but none of them are functional or relevant.

The book is very story based, with Mag meeting the MMC a few chapters in and learning more about her magic, as well as the secrets of the castle. There is a budding romance between the two in the first book, but it is very much a slow burn with the FMC being a virgin. There was only one spice scene at the end if that is of importance to you. Again, slow burn.

All in all it was a little adventure that reminded me a bit of DND with a splash of romance and longing on the side.

I read Dragon’s Secret in one sitting. If you like Dungeons and Dragons, adventure, story twists and revelations, this book is for you! Even if you don’t like those specific things, you will find something that appeals to you in this book. The world building was paced wonderfully and the character introductions were seamless. The developing relationships are interesting and varied and I cannot wait to see where they lead. I predicted one of the surprises pretty early on, but instead of being bummed about it, I really appreciated watching it play out. I was still excited for some other pieces that came together by the end. The D&D references and nods to currently existing human creations in a fantasy setting were so great. I laughed out loud at the “stupid popsicle” line. Can’t wait for the next book in the series!

"Dragon's Secret" is the series starter for the Everwinter series. The FMC Magdelyn is tasked with journeying to a faraway castle where a reclusivr, exiled wizard resides. In order to advance her mage studies, she is to learn and spy on this wizard. The castle is full of dangers and secrets she must uncover.

Overall, I really enjoyed the plot of this book. The idea is there, but I wanted more. The book could use a bit more character development and world building as it all felt a little rushed. That said, if you generally shy away from fantasy in favor of a quicker read, this is a perfect book to dip your toes into fantasy. I will definitely be picking up the next book to see what happens with our characters and watch this author grow.

This book was full of suspense and intrigue!
Right from the beginning we follow Magdelne, the just anointed senior mage FMC. She gets sent on a mission to be an apprentice to a recluse wizard.
Only as she makes her way there through a few obstacles along the way, things are not as they seem.
We follow her journey, her mission, and a dragon in this fast paced, keep you on your toes adventure.
The characters are likeable, the pace is so on point, and the tension is built quite beautifully towards the end to set up for the next book in the series which I will be devouring just like I did this story! A great read for sure.

A masterpiece! Long time since I have read something this good! This book has everything!

It has been a long time since I have been engulfed in a book like I have been with this one. Masterfully written in a way that did not let me put it down. The way the descriptions and conversations are written makes you feel like you are truly there. The magnificence of this storytelling is one I have not read in a while. Totally captivated by Magdelne and Epiphron’s love story and the passion and dedication between them. Wonderfully written. Can’t wait to read the next book.

4.75/5 stars! This book was a whirlwind adventure and I ate up every second of it. I found this book after it was recommended by a favorite author of mine. This book reminded me of some of my favorite epic fantasy reads, including "Daughter of No Worlds" and CN Crawfords' "Frost." The world-building was expertly done and I am now so invested in the outcome. I'm just a tiny bit bitter that we have to wait for the sequel. Highly recommend.

Honestly not sure what to think, but not in a bad way. I think I just wanted more story. This was definitely the first book for me in that it had a lot of set up. The world building was well done and I loved the descriptions of the pre-Shift "artifacts". I'm still immensely confused about the dreams but eager to get answers. I think I wanted more relationship between main characters, too. Good story flow and believable pacing. Overall, a quick fantasy read with a hint of spice. Adding book two to my TBR.

A Dragons Secret By Isla Elrick is a beautiful introduction into a new series. Fans of slow burn shifter romance with just a hint of adventure will adore this book. There are minimal TWs. Most notable are imprisonment, injury detail, death, and misogyny/classism. I was given a free copy but this review is my own. The pacing of the book was off sometimes. This may be due to lengthy descriptions but Isla did well in a painting a beautiful picture and making it easy to visualize. I loved the twists and turns and flip backs. I can't wait to see where this series goes.

Holy cow! I really enjoyed this book!! It gave me a lot of nostalgia of the things I used to pretend to play as a child - to be a wizard, go on an adventure, and fall in love with dragons! I enjoyed the whole journey of reading this book! The world building is done wonderfully, and the references of things that are common in our everyday life being so weird and confusing was a wonderful touch. It reminded me a lot of D&D, with the magic system and how the different races lived/acted!!

I loved so much about this book. First, I loved the design of the world and the ruins of our technological society. Second, I absolutely loved both of the main characters. The plot was really interesting once you got to where the two meet, but even up to that point the writing was so good that I wasn’t bored with the buildup. Finally, Mag’s childhood friend was very funny despite not playing much role in the story. Overall, great and it was cool to read something with a base in Icelandic mythology.

This book has the makings of a really good, epic story. I just, personally, don't feel it's there yet. I felt like the plot moved too quickly and the tension between the FMC and MMC just wasn't there. I feel like she went from being very suspicious of the MMC to utterly in love within 2-3 chapters. I think the storyline could use more details. Overall, I could see how this story could be so good but I felt like it lacked in many areas.

Dragon’s Secret feels like a Dungeons and Dragons campaign and to me that is a great thing. It’s a slow burn that has some great world building, characters I enjoyed, and a story that builds to a larger narrative. The world being built on the remnants of our world, but far in the future is an interesting concept. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to seeing how Magdelnes and Epiphron’s story continues.

I really enjoyed this book. I know a lot of people have referenced Dungeons and Dragons, but because I don’t play that game I tried to picture this book being in a similar environment to Skyrim. The goblins are grumpy and lovable, and the love between a human and a dragon almost reminds me of Spirited Away, one of my all time favorite movies. I feel like my review really can’t do this book justice!

Enchanting

Curious worldbuilding, part post apocalyptic part high fantasy. I really love Magdalne and all her imperfections that make her one of the most well balanced characters I've seen recently. The development of her relationships through the book is paced well, and nothing felt too slow or too rushed. The dragon wasn't much of a surprise, but I'm not sure he was meant to be. Certainly looking forward to book two!

Disclaimer: the author is an old friend of mine. This is an honest review, but I do recognize I there may be some bias I am not aware of because of this.

One of the first things I am instantly in love with is this world! The concept of the Shift and everything around is a unique idea that I don't recall ever seeing in a book and I love it! The story very easily hooks you in and I found myself flying through it quickly! Some pieces of dialogue were really funny and I found myself busted out laughing at them! Elrick does a wonderful job of perfectly balancing enticing plot and a sizzling romance. And I love the short girl rep!!

If Dungeons & Dragons was a book. Very cool and unique concept, but wanted more from the relationships and romance. There was not a lot of tension and will they/wont they in this book. I was missing that a bit, especially since they don’t kiss until after 90%, so i was starting to think there wasnt going to be romance. Also i feel like every obstacle in the novel was resolved rather quickly, besides the main one that needs to be overcome.

I enjoyed this book a lot. My favorite character besides the main two, is the goblin Heptep. I imagined him as like a Yoda like character, which in my head made him so loveable. When I started the book, I knew I was going to love it. Secrets, magic, dragons, and other supernatural beings. I love the lore that goes with this story. Definitely recommend!

I enjoyed following Magdelne's journey. Great start to a new series with lots of character and world development. A new spin on magic and dragons. Started a little slow but developed into a fun action filled read. The author did a great job wrapping up the current adventure while leading into the next. I am looking forward to Book 2 in this exciting new series!

The beginning with the world building felt a little slow for me, but I tend to always struggle at the beginning of new fantasy novels so that’s more of a me thing than an author thing. I thought the world and magic created was great and I may or may not be in love with Epiphron. The spicy scene at the end was definitely worth the slow burn! Looking forward to book 2!

This is an amazing book. Read it! The characters and world you find is well-written and magical. Magdelne and Epiphron are only just beginning their quest. Their shared passion jumps at you from the pages. Every woman needs something to fight for. And this sexy, scarred, blue dragon is the perfect subject.
