A deft and authoritative account of William Notman's metamorphosis from Scottish scoundrel to proprietor of a photographic studio empire stretching from Montreal across New England is followed by a lavish selection of beautiful nineteenth century plates illustrating the depth and breadth of Notman's passion turned expertise. An elegant volume worth a long look for anyone interested in the long nineteenth century, photography or Canadian history - or a lucky recipient into all three, like me!
