Ini adalah ulasan buku dwi-bahasa/This is a bilingual book review

a) The Ancient,Medieval and Renaissance World
b) The Enlightened World
c) The 19th Century World
d) The Modern World

People Who Changed The World by Rodney Castleden is a biography book on historical figures, who been thought changed the world. These historical figures is chronologically discussed through four (4) parts:

a) The Ancient,Medieval and Renaissance World
b) The Enlightened World
c) The 19th Century World
d) The Modern World

All the historical figures discussed in this book is varied on their background, from philosophers, politicians, scientists, until artists (examples of figures' names can be viewed in the description of the book available).
Am I satisfied and agreed with the author selection of historical figures presented on his book? In Introduction section, the author himself aware that his selection could never satisfying everyone. For myself,I also have my own reservation on the author's list of historical figures. However, overall,I'm quite satisfied with his list. For mass-market paperback edition, there are several addition and expansion made. For example, the inclusion of Osama bin Laden!
The most important is the value and role of this book which acts as an introduction for all history enthusiasts to begin their research on a particular historical figures. For example,if you are interested in Napoleonic War,there are several historical figures who directly involved in the war are featured in the book such as Horatio Nelson and Napoleon Bonaparte. But,of course, this book is also good to be read by anyone who are simply wanted to know more on historical figures who left their legacy in changing the world as we live in now.

A brief of summary of person who lived and made an impact on this earth. Either making the world better or for the worse, their life sure made its mark.

It begins with Siddhartha Gautama and ends with Bin Laden as this book is written in 2011. There are no more individuals that made into the list following that year. This book may not be so detailed but it is a good read as is gives you a timeline of human civilization and how it progresses through time.

Each biography is summarized in an average of 4 pages each, giving you the insight into the life of 'people who changed the world' from the point of view of their traumatizing childhood, displaced in war, broken personal relationship, later shaped the person who they are that so significant to the world.

One thing for sure, each of these people had their beginning and their end to their legacy. They are all, as we too, mortal humans anyway.

Before I discuss how I felt about the book, I'd like to give a disclaimer. From the cover, you might think like I did that this book mostly regards political figures, and it does have a large amount of inventors. But the author also feels that authors and inventors are people who changed the world, and maybe 30% of this book details the tedious lives of inventors of essential but not exactly enthralling aspects of our lives. The author himself said that their are many people who changed the world that aren't in his book, and it is certainly subjective, but as someone who was looking for more political characters, I was disappointing.

I also felt as if the author could be a little bias in his attempt to be subversive. I remember reading early about William the Conqueror, and the author was obviously trying to show alternative to mainstay history and focus more on the negative aspects of William's Norman invasion of Saxon England. However, this kind of undermines the awfulness of arguable worse characters in history, Ivan the Terrible, for instance. An alternative view on characters is refreshing if you already have an understanding of the figures Rodney was discussing, but as some of Rodney's biographies where my first encounter with the figure in question, I found myself wondering if I could trust his writing. I enjoyed his interpretation of Mao, a majorly disliked figure in history, though again I think alot of this was purposeful subversion to approach him from a new exciting angle.

Despite it's negative aspects, I still really enjoyed the book as it's kind of a gate way into understanding history. Through looking at characters of the last 4000 years, you get a simple but enthralling understanding of the history of the world, as the figures short biographies are more engaging than a text book with dates and events. I am a stout believer that history is made by strong people, and this book feels like a strong starting point for understanding world history, and gives context to the world over all. I'd like to say that it's a great beginners book, but be mindful that the author may have a subversive agenda at points, and try not to use is as a sole core understanding book, but rather an entertaining tool in solidifying what is already known.

A nice comprehensive read. Covers all important/relevant aspects of each person in the book in a short and precise manner. I particularly liked that it was divided by era, e.g. the renaissance.
