1. The jokes are not corny. Abrera is fond of using philosophy e.g., Nietzsche's (in this book) and profound sayings (that his characters read aloud or see scribbled on the walls by vandals). These pa-deep philosophical musings come naturally because his characters are students and teachers of his prestigious school. The book is neither pretentious because his characters speak in "Tagalog" or "Taglish" (Tagalog-English) so most people, who speak like them, could easily relate to the characters.I am not writing these positive comments about this comic strip series because Manix Abrera has agreed to be our author-guest during our book club's annual event on July 28th. I had read 5 of his books prior to my attempt to invite him. I have been his fan since I read the second book of this series and found myself laughing out loud. I have three email exchanges with him and the words that he uses in email are jolly and respectful (I am like his father I think) that are reflective of I think how his good personality. Let me share with you his most recent email to me:
2. The drawings are original. His characters have their own appeal. They are not copy cats from other local or foreign comic strips. They don't have names and that fact adds to their mystique. As you read and "see" them, you'd like to know more about each of them as they've all have become your friends.
3. The punchlines are wickedly funny. The punchlines, in the last frame of the strips, are where I always laughed at. The ordinary and expressionless faces of the characters suddenly become hysterical- shouting invectives, eyes gorging, hair rising and the spoken words are screamingly big! I myself don't curse or cuss normally so when I see somebody losing his control when shocked or surprised, that amuses me and normally makes me laugh....Then there are the usual side comments by kibitzers like "Asteeg!" "Hwooh!" "RakenRol" and you find yourself like one of them because they say what you feel like saying.
"Hi Sir Doni!
