Köhlmeier's Shakespearean retellings work in many ways. They are a homage - he reveals each play's worthiness as a great story. They are a reinterpretation - in the same way as any performance must be, Köhlmeier interprets and analyses the characters and their actions, questioning the whys of Shakespeares sometimes convoluted plots. They are spoofs - Köhlmeier is not afraid to take the mick, and not just of the comedies. Many of the characters are ridiculed (Lysander in always answering Yes!) even the great, melacholy tragic heroes like Hamlet, who is presented as less than wise.

In many ways this books shows the great beauty and flexibility of theatre in literature, how it can be taken and shaped to an authors will, the definition of a living text, breathing through all the holes left to be filled. Köhlmeier fills the spaces admirably. He balances a slight mocking tone and some very modern turns of phrase with an obvious sense of respect for the source material. Highlights include riproaring takes on Midsummer Night's Dream and As You Like It, a very sinister version of Julius Caeser and a melancholy King Lear. They are all good, pure entertainment, like the orginals, and written by a very refreshing contemporary voice. 7
