This is a remarkable book and Sylvia Baker is a much underrated author.

Stylistically, it has the poise and refinement of a classic yet the accessibility of a contemporary novel, making it a delight to read. But what puts it in a league of its own is its breathtaking psychological insight. The author's description of the protagonist's turbulent emotional landscape is second to none.

Quite simply, this is my favourite novel. Recently, I read it for the sixth or seventh time and it still managed to move me to tears and charm me with its emotional and psychological depths.

The only flaws are the title and the cover design, both of which suggest that it is just a trashy romance novel. I would change the title to 'Josephine Jarrouse' which is the name of the skillfully drawn protagonist.
