This book contains a wealth of information for the Jewish Woman. Anyone searching for the greater understanding of the role of the Jewish woman will find almost all answers that may come up as well as many others that you have never even thought of.
The authentic Jewish perspective on the role of women in Judaism. Best book I am aware of on the topic- the author consulted with Rebetzin Tziporah Heller, Rabbi Mordechai Tendler, and Rebetzin Faige Twerski (so you know this book is pretty legit). Aiken goes through the sources and covers all the topics- tackles the biggest controversies with a genuine and unafraid tone that helps you understand Judaism's real perspective.
I wish some people would read this book rather than wondering, for example, "What are those Orthodox Jews thinking that don't want women to be rabbis/read from the Torah/learn gemara?" or "The agunah problem shows that Judaism is misogynist." No, not really. Answers exist that make sense, thank you very much. You just need to understand Judaism as a holistic picture rather than a religion that consists solely of prayers in the synagogue. Lisa Aiken does a beautiful job at explaining the topic without pandering to the reader but also making it comprehensible for a reader with little prior knowledge about Torah Judaism. I highly recommend this book for religious and nonreligious-but-curious readers!
A thorough, well-researched, and clearly written summary of expectations of an Orthodox Jewish woman. That doesn't mean I agree with everything that is within these pages, but it answered a lot of my questions.
Incredible book, so much information and an amazing boiler plate for all things female in Judaism. This book was my first step into jewish gender concepts and women specific halacha and it did not disappoint. I am excited for more books and more learning now.
My only criticism, the introduction was not very approachable and honestly almost deterred me. But I am so glad I pushed through.
Thorough, solid information, but the writing is pretty dry. Reading this book was slow and laborious for me. Having said that, I appreciate the amount of research that went into writing this book, a topic that, generally speaking, isn't covered elsewhere.
A through, well-researched and eloquent book on a complex subject. It was a pleasure to read a book by an author who clearly values nuance and sanctity.
