Lake People #2

Disembodied Bones

Rate this book
Leonie Simoneaud was once one of the elusive Lake People, Acadian descendants in Louisiana with odd psychic powers. As a thirteen year old she rescued an outsider child, Douglas Trent, from a maniacal pedophile named Monroe Whitechapel. Consequently she was shunned by most of the Lake People for imperiling them to the external world.

As an adult she lives elsewhere, an owner of an antique store in a quaint Texas town, Buffalo Creek. However, she doesn’t know that she has been targeted by another madman, for a reason that has everything to do with her rescue of Douglas. Her friends are under attack and her psychic powers have been exposed to the people of Buffalo Creek. A child has been kidnapped and a backpack with a riddle inside was left on Leonie’s porch.

However, only Douglas and Leonie know that Monroe Whitechapel used riddles to taunt his many victims, and Leonie killed Whitechapel when she saved Douglas. It will take Leonie every drop of determination inside her to unravel the mystery and she will learn a desperate truth about a psychotic man she killed twenty years before.

Veiled Eyes was the first book in The Lake People Series, and I was a little disappointed with all the typos and repeating. The story itself was a good one, though, so I went with my instinct and purchased the second book in this series, Disembodied Bones. I'm happy to say that this one was much improved. There were still some typos here and there, but they were hardly noticeable, and Bevill didn't keep repeating herself like she did in the first book. The story was captivating and suspenseful. I was a little confused in the beginning, because one of the characters who died in Veiled Eyes was brought back to life in Disembodied Bones. I soon realized that Disembodied Bones actually begins years before the events that take place in Veiled Eyes. The stories don't collide until the very end. Because of the way they are written, either book could be read individually. Each book features it's own cast of characters. In Disembodied Bones, the story revolves around Leonie. Leonie's family is comprised of the infamous Lake People who inhabit Twilight Lake in Unknown, Louisiana. Leonie is an outcast who lives in Texas. When she was a little girl, she used her psychic abilities to rescue a kidnapped child from a dangerous pedifile, bringing unwanted publicity and attention to her family and Twilight Lake. As a result, she made a life for herself in Texas. Years later, the events that took place in her childhood come back to haunt her. This was a hard one to put down!

This is the second in the Lake People series although I don't think it matters much if you haven't read the first. The end is the only bit where the earlier story is connected.
This book tells us about Leonie, who as a 13 year old, from the Lake People community, just coming into her unusual ability rescues a young boy, an outsider, from a paedophile. There were repercussions for her as she put the clan at risk of exposure. Now she lives outside her community, selling antiques in the Texas town of Buffalo Creek. and incidents start to happen to her friends, that link back to that time in her childhood.
This story, being set in a different location and outside the clan wasn't what I was expecting but was a good read, engaging, enough turns and unknowns to keep my interest and even though the perpetrator is fairly easy to guess it still works.
The production issues were fewer in this book compared to the first but there were still some..
The narration was generally good.
Overall 4 stars
Performance 4 stars
Story 4 stars.

This is truly one of the most exciting, heart stopping, nerve jumping mystery books I have ever read. I feel as if the author sat down one day with paper and pen and made a list of every child fear, real or imagined, and then decided to write a book around those fears.

The story begins when our heroine, Leonie is only 13 years old and she senses that she knows the whereabouts of a missing 10 year old boy some miles away. She convinces a relative that she needs a ride to go find her father, and as she nears the boy, she gets away from the relative to go find him. She tries to speak with the Police Dept, but they mock her 13 year old psychic abilities. She truly is on her own with just her smarts to help save him. She finds and saves little Douglas, and his abductor is killed in the scuffle.

Turning the page to the present, Leonie has moved to get away from the unwanted spotlight of her teenage heroism and feels that she’s being haunted by the pedophile of her past. Her best friends’ child is abducted, a man appears to be stalking her where she goes, and information is coming her way that could only be known to her, Douglas, and the abductor.

Not being one to write spoilers, I will stop here and end with if you are “on the fence” about this book, don’t give it another thought. Open to the first page and get ready for a wild ride. Even though this book 2 in the Lake People series, it reads easily as a stand-alone book.

Bevill is an "indy;" an independent writer who publishes her writing through Amazon and other sources. The first book of hers that I read, "Bubba and the Dead Woman," was free. I have bought other of her books. Some indys are poorly proofread, but Bevill has taken the time to get it right. Her books are fun to read.

"Disembodied Bones" is part of her Lake People series. It takes place near Shreveport, LA and later Dallas, Texas. Leonie is a member of the clannish Lake People who have secrets. While she was thirteen, she rescues a young boy from a predator. Later, someone proves the adage that "no good deed goes unpunished."

As an indy author myself, give her books a read. You may find a new voice to enjoy.

Review Time Disembodied Bones (Lake People Book 2)
Author C.L. Bevill, Narrator Melanie Crawley

I really enjoyed book one of the lake people series, and wondered how this book would continue the story and if it would be as good as the previous novel. Well to cut a long story short, I thought it was better than the first book, the story was not a continuation of the first novel, but was about other people from the same uniquely special community, so it was linked, I am guessing the rest of the series may follow the same pattern.

As with the previous book the narrator has a very strong southern American accent, the words are very long and drawn, I was listening to it through Audible so just increased the play speed up to 1.35, this made a massive difference to me.

The lake people are very gifted, not only do they have unique golden eyes and dark hair they are telepathic communicators,  they do not like outsiders and stick to their own community.

Little 13 year old Leonie Simoneaud  gift is just developing, but she is damaged and her gift does not work properly. Leonie is just learning she can find lost things, but they need to be really loved and missed for her to be able to find them. This coincides with the abduction of a little boy. Leonie sets out to rescue him from a ruthless twisted paedophile, but little does Leonie know there is a second child  whom she leaves behind.

Years later the story resumes, the child that was left behind is set on revenge and systematically sets out to destroy Leonie, he is going to take her life to pieces, will she survive? well you will have to read or listen to the story to find out, but I can tell you  it is gripping,  right until the very end.

So know I am left wondering what is going to happen in book 3, whom we are going to meet and if the author will be able to surpass this book.

Finally a massive thank you to Melanie Preston and C.L Bevill for giving me the opportunity to listen to and review this book.

Like some of the other reviewers was confused by the return of a character I knew to be in jail from the first one, so started really disappointed. However the story line was good and once you realise the first third of the book is set like 20 years ago it begins to make sense. I think the author padded this book out a little with descriptions of places and furniture etc which I tend to skip as these can be quite droll - but all in all enjoyed the story, the characters and the plot looking forward to number 3

So far, this has been my favorite of the Lake People novels. The characters are all well flushed out, even characters that you meet only once and never see again. The mystery and twists are unexpected and riveting, and the main characters are believable and enticing. The pacing is good with fewer flash backs/flash forwards than some of Ms. Bevill’s other books, and everything is described with great detail. Loved this book!

I love the Lake People books, because I find the entire premise of Unknown and La Famille to be just fascinating. These books never fail to get you right in the feels, but this one was particularly heartbreaking - and hopeful. Full of twists and well-developed characters!

Suspense

In terms of keeping me reading, this book did.
Some of the suspense was a bit contrived, but it was a tense sort of contrivance. The characters were good, although not as multidimensional as some other author's. As a story, it is above average.

I'll start out by saying that the first book in the series is so good that I broke my free-books-only rule and bought the second one. I don't do that much, partly because I'm a skinflint, but also because when I buy a book, I enjoy it less --- I'm always second-guessing whether I'm getting my money's worth. Which is all a long way of saying --- this book started out with one strike against it, but soon proved to be worth every penny. (It didn't hurt that the author set the price at $1.99 instead of at the exorbitant prices many indie authors seem to aim for.)

Price aside, Disembodied Bones is a riveting suspense story with a very light romance and a hint of fantasy. It works perfectly well as a standalone, being in the same world but with different characters (mostly) than Veiled Eyes. And despite the fact that most un-short novels lately have felt padded to me, Disembodied Bones required every one of its 399 pages and maintained my interest throughout.

For me, a story is really about its characters, and I thoroughly enjoyed the three-dimensional characters in Disembodied bones, none of whom was purely black or white. Our heroine was troubled but spunky, and our hero was mysterious. (In fact, he was so mysterious, you're not quite sure which character he was for a while.)

There *is* one graphic scene of pain that was a bit too much for me, but it came near the climactic point and definitely moved the plot along, so it was far from gratuitous. And you've got to keep in mind that I steer clear of any kind of graphic violence, so if you watch even the bare minimum of TV, you're probably too hardened to notice the scene I'm talking about.

My only real complaint with the book (which isn't enough to dock any stars) is the riddles at the beginning of each chapter. The device worked well with the story, but the riddles themselves bothered me. Some were ripped straight out of The Hobbit with no attribution, and I can't help feeling like I'd be betraying Bilbo if I didn't point that out. A brief author's note to that effect would have been much appreciated.

All of my long-windedness aside, Disembodied Bones is an absolutely excellent novel, highly recommended for...well...pretty much everyone.

Riddle-
Buried ever so deep, Piled over with heavy stones, Yet I will Effortlessly dig up the disembodied bones. What am I?

Disembodied Bones was just the right amount of mystery, suspense, crime & a bit of romance with enough fearful moments to make you jump,  aleast a little bit & not totaly scream like a girl....

description

It not the type of story that rips you out of your seat holds you tightly to it's chest & doesn't let go until the last nail biting ending, it's the type of story that slowly nulls you into a feeling of warmth & comfort before ripping it away & making you judge everyone & everything before coming to the conclusion you were right in the first place.
Many of the plots & twists I saw coming from a mile away but I didn't really care because I was enjoying the ride, C.L. Bevill Had be seating in my little reader high chair while she  spoon fed me her tale of mystery & woe before sending me on my way.

description

& i gotta say i really enjoyed it, I'm not saying I didn't feel squeamish or get pissed off, it was about a guy who kidnapped children for Christ sake so of course I got emotional,  it was just minor emotional, which was what I wanted, or more what I need or seriously I would not be able to sleep after reading it. Ekkkkkkk.

I loved the little riddles at the start of every chapter & actually got em right(some of the time..lol). I'd recommend this too anyone who wants light some frills & chills.

So all Up it's a pretty enjoyable novel.

"I’m not sure if I want to get used to you reading my mind.” “It was as plain as the nose on your face,” he said sincerely. “And I wasn’t sure if you’d let me in if I had knocked." - Leonie. Disembodied Bones.

You can almost smell the bayou

I first picked up this book, honestly, for two reasons. It was inexpensive on my Nook, and it was about Louisiana, no matter that it was set in Texas. Confusing? It will make sense when you read the book, never fear. The whole Louisiana thing? Yes, it has been an obsession for years, ever since I left the South, and never found my way back again.

Be that as it may, the story immediately grabbed me, and soothed me into a long day of immersing myself into a culture I know and love. The prologue introduces you to a community of secrets, secrets deep as the bayou and as all encompassing as the waters of the Black Lake itself.

The story begins when the main character, Leonie, is only a child, a child who is 'different' as her family is 'different.' And this difference, while actually a thing of beauty, is a true danger to the members of the large, extended family living by the lake. I was enchanted by the 'difference' that the lake people share. And as I read this book, and then "Veiled Eyes" the second Lake People novel, it led me to think about just how much 'difference' can guide the development of your life from the minute you are born. It isn't just this one, special, difference, but the whole concept of being 'different.' God knows, I grew up 'different' - but without the sense of community that Leonie's family offered, even if she, in her particular difference, didn't even fit in comfortably in la famille. But Leonie did survive it, survive and thrive, something I wish that I could have done.

Read the book. Really. Then read Veiled Eyes, or in the opposite order if you so wish. But read them. They have heart and soul, and will leave you more than ready for the next one. Yes, she is writing another, I wrote my very first 'fan letter' and she actually wrote back - does that rock, or what?

P.S. - And then read her other books. I have read "Bubba and the Dead Woman" and am off to review that one, too. I will read her others too, without a doubt. As good as these three are, funny, warm, thoughtful, and downright _Good_ I know I can't go wrong!

This is the second book in "The Lake People" series by C.L. Bevill and I really enjoyed it!

Book Description: " Leonie Simoneaud was once one of the elusive Lake People, Acadian descendants in Louisiana with odd psychic powers. As a thirteen year old she rescued a child from a maniacal pedophile. Consequently she was shunned by most of the Lake People for imperiling them to the external world. As an adult she has been targeted by another madman, for a reason that has everything to do with that rescue."

This is a disturbing book and if you are claustrophobic...not one I would recommend reading. However, that said, it is a thrill ride from page one to the very end. I could hardly put it down but found myself needing to take a break from it just to let my brain recover from the constant tension not to mention the riddles. Oh yes, this book is all about riddles and solving them becomes a life and death challenge.

Even though I suspected early on who the antagonist was I simply had to keep reading to watch the story unravel. There is nothing more frightening to a parent than the prospect of having your child abducted by a maniac but this book goes way beyond that horror story. Leonie can only find things or people who are a truly missed by someone...but what if she doesn't know about a child that no one misses at all?

There are a few grammatical errors in the book and those tend to make me a bit crazy but there weren't enough to put me off. If you're looking for a really good, hair raising thriller...this is it!

I liked the first book a lot more than this one, thought that is not to say I didn’t like this one – I DID. But it didn’t have as much romance in it as the first, and maybe that’s why, since I tend to like books with more romance in it. I gotta say though, I LOVED THE riddles before each chapter, and then at the end it would give the riddle again and its answer. It made me think and I even got several answers correct! I wasn’t quite satisfied with the end though because it seemed like even though there IS a happy ending, there was little time spent developing the relationship between Leonie and Douglas/Gideon. And I had a hunch he was the one she’d rescued all those years back; plus also finding out whom the kidnapper was – I’d guessed it correctly. It had good twists to the story, but I would have liked to see Leonie’s and Gideon’s relationship develops more. I cringed at the part where Leonie had to ‘hurt’ one of her hands in order to escape; it reminded me a tiny bit of the movie Saw, though it’s nowhere near as gruesome as that movie was, don’t get me wrong. I’ve enjoyed reading the Moon Trilogy series by Bevill as well, and look forward to reading the others too.

This book is heavy on the paranormal and not so much on the romance... there's only kissing at the very end. Is this a disappointment? Not at all!!! This book grabs you, sucks you in and won't let go until you've finished. So many twists and turns that will keep you hooked as the story goes on. Absolutely fantastic, I couldn't wait for it to end but also didn't want it to end. The characters in this, whether they are 'good' or 'bad' are all brilliantly written with real quirks and idiosyncrasies that will have you laughing at them or nodding in agreement with them.

There is a passing mention at the end of Anna and Gabriel from Veiled Eyes, book 1 in this series which is currently FREE!!!

If you like mysteries, suspense, paranormal, romance, thrillers or just a real mixture of all the above, try this series on for size!

There is a giant catfish in the lake surrounded by psychics, what could possibly be strange about that.

This is the next instalment in the Lake People and they aren't in the town of Unknown by Twilight Lake, but it's still a gripping read. Leonie saves a young boy from a paedophile when he is younger. She can find things if they are truly missed and Douglas Trent is truly missed. She has this intense connection to him. However mixing with outsiders doesn't sit well with the family and Leonie doesn't have the same gifts as the rest of the family and she moves away when she grows up.

This is a great read, some of it is predictable but it's still a great read. I loved the riddles that flowed throughout the book and the connection between Leonie and the two main male characters.

Overall it turned out to be ok. It just seems like there were a lot of extra words in some places. So much description and scenery explanation made me wanna just skip over it. I think if it would moved a wee bit faster between the scenes I wouldn't have felt like the plot was over predictable and like I was just waiting for her to tell me what I already knew. I would have also liked a little more from the characters actually at the Lake. My favorite parts in series is interaction with characters that I already know and the progression of their previous stories. Overall it was cool and I will check out Book 3

I enjoyed this book. It was different than the previous book I have read by C.L. There was a lot to the story, with one more surprise near the end. It starts with Leonie as a little girl when she first gets her "power" where she can locate things and people that are lost and missed. She finds a little boy when no believes that she knows what happened to him. The story than skips ahead to the older Leonie, she no longer gets the feelings that tell her where lost things are located, until her best friend's little girl is taken. This starts a chain of events that will bring her full circle.

I really enjoyed this book. I am looking forward to the next in the series. This one is set in the past and parallels the veiled eyes. We must understand the past to comprehend our present. Deep huh? Her characters grow on you and it makes you ask so many questions as to how to help someone believe you're who you say you are when they question your character as a person. If they dont believe you, how can they ever see the importance of the truth you are telling them? Sometimes we have to have a little help from our friends. Good read!

I was really disappointed in this book. The story and characters were good, but I couldn't get over all of the spelling errors and typos. I lost count somewhere around 20..."he got into his cat" or using ilk instead of like. I probably would have given this 3 starts, but the editing matters and this didn't have any. There were also some plot issues that lead to confusing moments and dropped story lines that also should have been caught by editing. I do like this author though and if she ever needs a beta reader I am available.

C.L. Bevill did it again! She kept me in suspense throughout the entire book. This was a very captivating book with many surprises in it. Pretty much kept you in suspense as to the who the killer was to the the very end. I had a very difficult time to put this book down. It kept me so intrigued page after page. About the time you think you have the plot figured out, something happens, to change your line of thinking, and it will keep you thinking to the very last chapter.
This book was well written. Now on to the next book of this series, which is Arconorum (Lake People).

Terrific story, awesome writer. This is one of those books that you just can't read fast enough or slow enough. You want to it slowly so it'll last longer, but you also want to read as fast as you can because you want to know what's going to happen next. I've read several of C. L. Bevill's books and have loved every one of them. Her stories are so rich and captivating. If you enjoy paranormal, fanatasy, and just plain good people books, you can't go wrong with C. L. Bevill.

This was suprisingly good! I don't normally go for mysteries/thrillers, but it was only 99 cents through BN.com so I figured it was worth a shot. I was a little concerned when I saw that it was almost 1000 NOOK pages, but decided I'd just read and see what happens. Glad I did! Towards the end, it got a little predictable like mysteries are wont to do, but overall, the writing was compelling and totally kept me on the hook. Would definitely recommend!
