A thorough portrayal of the history of the Bears franchise and the men that have built the legacy. The author compiles a comprehensive examination of the early NFL and where the Bears fit in the picture. The rich history of the team, covered in excellent detail, is the real gem of this piece of work. The text switches between a broad overview of 8 decades of professional football and chapters focusing upon the legends in Bears history. Specific chapters are dedicated to George Halas, Gayle Sayers--including an extended amount of the Brian Piccolo/Gayle Sayers dynamic, and Walter Payton. Of course, a chapter is dedicated to the '85 "Super Bowl Shuffle" team. The chapters based upon individuals draw a picture of the men beyond their accomplishments. Mr. Freedman includes a thorough sketch of the individual personalities of the men.

The history of the team from the early '90's and 2000's is shoehorned into the end of the novel. The seasons are covered with little depth. Also, the vocabulary contains a few words well above the intended grade level of the audience.
