In 1998 he published Le irregolari, the semi-autobiographical novel on the Argentine military regime of the Seventies. In 2001 he released Arrivederci, amore ciao, which was adapted into a movie in 2005. In 2004 he published Death's Dark Abyss, a nihilistic noir on the theme of revenge.

Un nuovo caso per Marco Buratti detto l'Alligatore e i suoi due compari, Beniamino Rossini e Max la Memoria (che Carlotto continua a chiamare il ciccione pur sapendo quanto può dare fastidio che una persona in sovrappeso venga chiamata così, dato che ci è passato pure lui!). Max ha ormai scontato il suo anno a Rebibbia (con cui si concludeva il caso precedente) e adesso, assieme ai due compagni, cerca di scoprire chi abbia incastrato il loro cliente in un traffico di droga internazionale in cui non c'entra niente. Tra trafficanti colombiani e internazionali, poliziotti e finanzieri corrotti, il vecchio Rossini riesce a mettersi nuovi braccialetti/scalpi al polso, mentre, nonostante le indagini, è la tacita legge che vige tra i malavitosi che alla fine trionfa.
Questo caso si basa su un caso vero di una persona che Carlotto ha incontrato mentre scontava parte della sua pena in carcere.

At this time of the year for some reason, goodness knows what, I crave dark, violent, humorous escapism. I crave pulp, noir, hardboiled, I'll even happily take nasty. THE COLOMBIAN MULE delivered exactly what I was looking for.
It doesn't hurt that this isn't a police procedural, a stereotypical lone wolf private detective or any of the expected scenarios as well. Instead we do have a PI, who works with a group of old friends, to solve problems. In this case, the problem is why one man seems to have been set up to take the fall as the recipient of drugs smuggled in by a Columbian man who has a big reason to be worried about himself. What doesn't make sense is why he's seemingly identified the wrong man as his contact. Our hero, ex-con, former blues singer, fixer, secret bar owner and his intrepid team set out to work out what the real story is.
The book is sparse, tight and beautifully balanced, with not an excess word in sight. Peopled with some very original characters, who slide and dodge their way through life, with every action, every act, tempered by the understanding of what doing time in jail will do to a man.

Un punticino in meno rispetto all'episodio precedente. Ottima prima parte, meccanismi ormai rodatissimi. C'è una netta crescita rispetto all'esordio della serie, soprattutto nei dialoghi, che a maggior ragione adesso, al quarto "capitolo" ritengo essere stati sull'orlo del ridicolo. Storia interessante che si sviluppa in maniera fluida e ricca di tensione. Peccato che nella seconda parte troppi siano i continui capovolgimenti di fronte nell'aspetto legato alle forze dell'ordine (mi fermo per non spoilerare)

Carlotto is one of the best contemporary Euro crime-noir writers — sharp, smart, that mixture of pathos and brutality. Carlotto’s own biography is sufficiently chilling, and Death’s Dark Abyss is a 5-star read. This is the first of a series that I could find in English and — though very good — it is burdened by a large cast of characters — each with triple names and nicknames to boot. That made the book a little harder to follow than it needed to be — esp. for what was intended to be a fast read.
Anyway, for those who like the genre and don’t know Carlotto, highly rec’d.

Interesting read by a new author for me. I enjoyed the plot and there were nice characters. I will definitely keep this author in mind.

Un pochino deluso da questa quarta storia dell'alligatore. Nonostante si legga benissimo, l'alligatore è diventato un protagonista estremamente passivo. Tra Rossini che ammazza tutti e Max la Memoria che prepare i piani, al nostro alligatore non rimane altro che bere calvados e comportarsi saltuariamente come bussola morale del gruppo. Un po poco. Tra l'altro la bussola esplode quando il gruppo decide di rendersi complice in un crimine indicibile (tratta di esseri umani) credendo comunque di essere nel giusto.

This book was a big disappointment. After loving At aThe End of a Dull Day I expected much more. This book was clunky and awkward. The tropes were well worn ruts in that old mystery bypass of the detective/recovery specialist. I think the butler in this case is the translator, one Christopher Wodall. He did it.

An exciting fast-paced crime novel. A cocaine smuggler is caught and a semi-innocent man is on the hook. Our gang of criminals, working for money from the guy’s lawyer, tries to clear him while staying between the lines and out of prison. Complicated, but a real page-turner.

Apro, leggo le prime righe, e dopo pochi paragrafi sono già dentro la storia, curiosa di vedere cosa farà Tia, chi è, dove andrà e in che modo avrà a che fare con l’Alligatore.
C’era però qualcosa di diverso, che mi sfuggiva, Marco era strano, non capivo cosa avesse. Certo, vanno a finire in una situazione non simpatica, lui Rossini e Max, fra polizia e guardia di finanza e un affare di traffico di droga internazionale. Il pericolo di tornare in galera è altissimo, comprensibile che l’Alligatore sia in tensione. Ma c’era qualcosa che mi sfuggiva, rallentavo, riflettevo, non lo trovavo. Poi, nell’ultima pagina, o meglio nell’ultima pagina dopo la fine del romanzo, vale a dire nella “Nota dell’autore”, ho capito. Il libro è dedicato a un carissimo amico di Massimo Carlotto, Nazzareno Corradi, ingiustamente accusato, ingiustamente detenuto. Io che l’Alligatore lo sto recuperando libro dopo libro, non sapevo di questa particolarità, però Carlotto è riuscita a trasmettere l’abbattimento, o la tristezza, o la rabbia, o non so cosa. Perché un non so cosa io l’ho percepito nel corso di tutta la storia. Anche nel comportamento con Virna. Certo, Buratti è afflitto come pochi da problemi. Nel precedente libro gli muore Marielita fra le braccia, in questo ha a che fare con un uomo ingiustamente accusato e le indagini lo portano a correre il rischio di finire di nuovo in prigione, cosa che gli è intollerabile anche solo pensare. Con Virna le cose non vanno, perché lui vuole stare con lei ma non riesce a farlo nel modo che sarebbe più logico, con attenzioni e tempo trascorso insieme, con impegni presi e magari rispettati. Eppure non era solo questo, era diverso il suo modo di fare, era diverso il suo stare nella vicenda, era diverso anche il suo modo di bere Calvados.
Lo dico ogni volta, lo ripeto ancora. Di Carlotto mi piace molto la capacità umana di stare con le persone, rendendole personaggi (o viceversa se si preferisce), e la nota finale se fosse stato necessario lo conferma. E poi mi piace molto la sua capacità di stare nella realtà, di usare la narrazione per raccontare la realtà. Una realtà che è spesso anche più noir dei suoi racconti. Nel corriere colombiano narra del cambiamento delle regole, regole che non vengono più rispettate se non dal detenuto ingiustamente che, pur tradito dall’amico e dall’amante, non li tradisce a sua volta. Ma è rimasto uno dei pochi, insieme a Rossini, a rispettare ancora regole non scritte su cui però ci si basava fino ad allora. Quelle regole sono cambiate, la giustizia non è sempre giusta, il colpevole non è sempre colpevole. E questo, oltre che rendere triste l’Alligatore, rende tristi a prescindere.

What is amazing about this novel is how much it is rooted in reality. The author was imprisoned and has deep knowledge of the dark side of criminal life in Italy. The feel was episodic and with the naturalness of these older men swimming in the deep of clubs, prostitutes, gangsters, corrupt policemen and prison guards with added layer of the viciousness of the Colombian narcos and home-grown Italian murderers. Marco and his friends are hired as private investigators to find out the real story of why a man (who is equally shady) was set up in a drug deal gone wrong. The rules of old-fashioned criminals are clear, it seems in Italy omerta rules and even as they find out the entrapment and the way for the man in prison to clear his name, his adherence to the honour code is steadfast. Light read with lots of illumination on life in Northern Italy in the underworld. Much to like.

The main character, along with two other savory characters (all ex-cons), are rogue investigators trying to help a lawyer get his client out of jail who was innocent but was set up. The story involves corrupt cops, the Mafia, drugs, and the Columbian "mafia." In the author's notes, he based the story on a guy he met in prison (read The Fugitive to learn the story of the author, Massimo Carlotto) who was there for a crime he didn't commit but who would stay there because he would not point fingers.

Non il mio preferito di Carlotto, ma (ri)leggerlo stupisce sempre per come la trama avvince, per come le pagine volano velocissime una dopo l'altra: una narrazione davvero sua e riconoscibilissima.
Un voto in più per l'esistenza reale di Nazzareno, un tocco quasi commovente e che fa pensare oltre che (come quasi sempre) mettere dei punti interrogativi sul limite di demarcazione fra i buoni e i cattivi.

Been in a reading rut, as in nothing on my bookshelf looks interesting. Went to a bookstore, saw this, maybe reading a noir would help? Read it quickly I probably won't read others by this author. The Colombian Mule's most interesting feature is the insight into the rules and ethics of Italian criminals & the characters are built on people the author knows.

Different and engaging. If you are looking for something other than the usual fare then Carlotto is a writer to look out for. I had him recommended to me and this book didn't disappoint. The crime being investigated isn't centre-stage, instead the characters, Italy and its underworld are to the fore. Excellent.

Didn't finish this. Stopped on page 130 out of about 175. Not a terrible book (although I get the feeling it has lost something significant in translation) but really quite dull and while I would ordinarily power through so close to the end, I would rather just go and grab something new off my shelves.

In questo quarto capitolo dell'Alligatore, c'è una nota di amarezza profonda che pervade tutte le pagine, si avverte nitidamente e non è dettata solo dalla vicenda, epurata delle solite nottate goderecce del protagonista e con un Rossini più spietato del solito.
Ne viene spiegato il motivo nelle note finali dell'autore, che ho apprezzato una volta di più per la sua profonda coerenza e sincerità.

non amo molto le serie episodiche, proprio perché dopo un po' iniziano a perdere mordente.. questo quarto volume l'ho trovato piuttosto povero, senza guizzi di trama, con diversi recap continui un po' tediosi.. insomma, un volume trascurabile, apparentemente fatto tanto per mandare avanti la trama.. vedremo più avanti dei nei volumi successivi il tiro si rialza..

Hard hitting Italian noir. Marco and his two mates, basically a violent one and a quiet one, seek to free an ‘innocent’ man. Involving drugs and Colombians, clubs and dancers, secret deals and policemen. As with all things noir, it doesn’t run smoothly.

Neat subversion of conventions even of noir: An ex-con acting as a PI in the service of other criminals, some of whom act honourably when cops do not. Plot was a bit pedestrian though.

Pretty good stripped down Italian crime novel involving drug smuggling and official corruption. Who can resist a story where the lead character is called “the 🐊 Alligator” who works both sides of the law.
