With his best-selling track record, Gregory is one of AMP’s most successful non-cartoon humorists. Stupid American History was #12 on the New York Times paperback best-seller list in July 2009.
From absurd 911 calls to presidential philosophizing and foolish felons, Leland Gregory generates the best laughs by exposing the worst of human nature. Collectively, his humor collections have sold more than 500,000 copies and generated two New York Times best-sellers. Inside S Is for Stupid , Gregory sets his sights on the stupidest of stupid with a "best-of" collection featuring 50 percent new material and 50 percent fan favorites.
As Gregory's largest collection yet, S Is for Stupid features more than 350 pages of outrageous stories, trivia, and factoids organized alphabetically by topic. Such entries
* The following is a doctor's actual diagnostic The patient is married but sexually active.
* "Shooting Reported at Firing Range" --the State, Columbia, South Carolina, August 4, 2006
* Arrested for public urination in Bowling Green, Mr. Joshua Pees. --the Sentinel-Tribune , Bowling Green, Ohio, September 5, 2001
Because the stories Gregory chronicles are just that unbelievable, each anecdote, quote, or factoid is presented with relevant background information, including its verified news source.
This book had some really great stories in it about stupidity people commit. I would laugh out loud about some of the things people did, including a guy who robbed a bank so he could get away from his wife.
Readable and in places quite funny. However, too many of the incidents are just sad and I felt some guilt reading about them...still continued, but felt some guilt. I did enjoy finding so many of the reported stupidities had to do with "Florida Man". We are a very " stupid" state. Smile. I am glad I read this one of the collection from Mr. Gregory, but one is enough.
For what this is--a collection of silly stories about people doing dumb things--it is okay. Some stories tickled my funny bone and some were just ridiculous. But overall it was an easy and quick read, perfect for while I ate my breakfast before work.
If I had read this before Gregory's other books, it would have rated higher but it is basically just reusing bits and pieces from his other installments.
A funny and informative read. Some of my favourite examples:
*In August 2008, Federal officers in Billings, Montana, spotted fugitive Sterling Wolfname on the street, and when they approached him he tried to give them an alias. The twenty-six-year-old didn’t fool the officers, however, because “Wolfname” was tattooed on the side of his head.
*In 2008 Jessica Cohen of Cincinnati, Ohio, went to the local public defender’s office seeking a lawyer to represent her on a theft charge. Cohen filled out paperwork, which included her name and address, and then stole an employee’s cell phone. She was later rearrested on charges of theft.
*In 1999 the Seattle Police Department required the twenty-six employees in its fingerprint unit to attend a half-hour mandatory training session on how to sit in a chair. The safety class evolved after three employees filed workers’ compensation claims for injuries they sustained after they hurt themselves attempting to sit in chairs with rollers.
Books like this one makes me scratch my head when I read them. Are all these real stories of are they made up? Well that you the reader will have to decide. It would be easy to just make up a bunch of stories and say they are true, but come on these sound too stupid not to be real. Some of them will give you a laugh as to just how stupid some people are and make you thank your lucky stars that you are not the subject of any of them.
Stupid history implies that these short tales will be historical in nature...maybe a few were that, but most were wacky news stories or funny headlines.....I know you could make the case that everything that has already happened is history.....but....you know. I read the whole thing, and some of it was amusing, so I don't feel like it was a total waste of time.
Some funny blurbs, some "OMG, people are so dumb" blurbs, some "that's not funny, it's just sad a person did that" blurbs. Definitely not a sit down and read through it book. I read a few at a time. I like that it was arranged alphabetically.
So fun! I absolutely loved it. It's an easy read and funny as well. I listened to it while going to bed because they're short stories and you don't have to worry about missing anything. Something to make you smile when you fall asleep.
