Throughout her life, Callas waged a constant battle with her weight, a battle she eventually won, transforming herself from an ugly duckling into the slim and glamorous diva who transformed opera forever, whose recordings are legend, and whose life is the stuff of which tabloids are made.

Anne Edwards goes deeper than previous biographies of Maria Callas have dared. She draws upon intensive research to refute the story of Callas's "mystery child" by Onassis, and she reveals the true circumstances of the years preceding Callas's death, including the deception perpetrated by her close and trusted friend. This is a very balanced, insightful and well-researched portrait of a fascinating woman. The iconic opera diva as well as the vulnerable and complex woman underneath is thoroughly explored. Anne Edwards is a very talented biographer. I was already a fan of her books and when I found out she had written this biography of Maria Callas, one of my favorite singers, I had to read it and the book actually exceeded my expectations.

Such a great book. I was reading this book on holiday in Verona. Walking around the arena in Verona thinking that Maria Callas was performing in that arena on her first show and many times after was such an amazing experience. If you are a fan of opera and theatre I would very much recommend this book. So much interesting information about Maria Callas.

I bought this book many years ago when I was asked to talk about someone famous from my country and I couldn’t think of anyone. (That has now changed.) I knew Maria Callas was a Greek American (I am Greek Cypriot), but she was the only person at the time who I could think of who almost fit the bill.

Anne Edwards was, in my opinion, the perfect biographer for this book with her music background and opera training. I loved the descriptions of the operas, their stories, the costumes, the settings and props, etc. I felt AE was honest in describing MC’s performance triumphs and shortcomings. MC’s personal life also seemed well-researched. I liked the footnotes and extracts backing up what AE wrote. AE succeeded in bringing to life a past era and lifestyle.

What I really loved about this book was that it reminded me of my love for the arts and the opera; I found myself looking up opera and classical music on youtube, watching documentaries about opera singers, etc. which I have not done for a couple of years.

Overall, an interesting and educational read with a horrifying ending.

I really loved this book. So much I didn’t know about Callas! The author does a great job detailing HOW as well as WHY Maria Callas became the Neil Peart or Frank Lloyd Wright of opera.

Some typos and a choppy writing style slightly mar the book...but don’t let that stop you from reading this amazing story.

Primadonna stulecia” Anne Edwards jest wciągająca jak dobry film.

Callas urodziła się w 1923 roku w niezamożnej greckiej rodzinie w Nowym Jorku. Mimo że jej rodzice w USA przebywali ledwie od kilku miesięcy, dzięki urodzeniu stała się automatycznie obywatelką amerykańską, co miało niebagatelne znaczenie w jej późniejszym życiu. Jej młodość przypadła na lata wojny, którą spędziła w Atenach, tocząc walkę o przeżycie. Jej talent odkryła bardzo wcześnie matka, która w podobnym stopniu pomogła w rozwoju jej kariery, co w nim przeszkodziła. Ta relacja jest zresztą jednym z ważnych wątków w całej książce. Świat nie od razu poznał się na wielkim talencie Callas, która długo musiała czekać na swoją szansę. Ludzie interesowali się nią jednak nie tylko z powodu jej talentu, ale też ze względu na jej głośny romans z greckim milionerem Arystotelesem Onassisem, a także z powodu jego z kolei romansu z Jackie Kennedy i pewnej rywalizacji obu pań.

Książka przeprowadza nas w wielu szczegółach przez całe życie Marii Callas, aż do jej nagłej śmierci w 1977 roku. Była jedną z najbardziej pożądanych kobiet swoich czasów. Jej zachwycające arie operowe rzucały na kolana tłumy. Ukochana primadonna, schodząc ze sceny, stawała się porywcza i wybuchowa. Z wyrachowaniem zdradzała męża. Los nie pozostawał jej dłużny. Arystoteles Onassis – najbogatszy wówczas człowiek na świecie – zmusił Callas do ukrywania ciąży, a później dziecka, które zmarło kilka dni po porodzie. Wreszcie porzucił ją dla Jacqueline Kennedy.

Na scenie – olśniewająca. Jej głos łamie serca i wznosi dusze, ale za kurtyną kryje się zimna jak stal, bezlitosna istota. Każdy jej uśmiech to maska, wyćwiczona do perfekcji. Gdy śpiewa, publiczność drży z zachwytu, lecz w jej pieśniach słychać echo dawno pogrzebanych sekretów. Ale jedno jest pewne – ta primadonna nie śpiewa tylko dla aplauzu. Śpiewa, by przetrwać. I by nikt nigdy nie zapomniał, kim naprawdę jest.

To opowieść o geniuszu i samotności. Maria Callas – diwa o głosie nie z tego świata, ale i kobieta, która nigdy nie zaznała prawdziwej miłości. Od dziecka pozbawiona matczynego ciepła, wtłoczona w świat ambicji, który połknął jej dzieciństwo. Szlifowana jak diament, zamknięta w złotej klatce oczekiwań. Jej życie to opera – dramatyczna, pełna namiętności, zdrad i upadków. Szczyty sławy, gorzkie miłości, głos tracony przez złamane serce. Zdradzona przez mężczyzn, których kochała, zapomniana przez świat, któremu oddała wszystko.

Książka, która zostawia w czytelniku silne emocje. Napisana z wielką rzetelnością, pozwala niemal wejść w życie bohaterki. Razem z nią przeżywałam smutki, sukcesy, wzloty i upadki. Z każdą stroną coraz wyraźniej widziałam, jak rodzi się prawdziwa primadonna XX wieku. Wspaniałe wydanie, pełne pięknych fotografii, przenosi nas w klimat tamtych lat i pozwala jeszcze lepiej poczuć magię Callas. Z pełnym przekonaniem – bardzo polecam.

Conocía solo algún que otro detalle sobre la vida de María Callas, pero lo poco que sabía me daba la pauta que su vida sería muy interesante de leer. Así llegué a este libro, una biografía con un nivel muy importante de investigación sobre la vida y obra de una de las cantantes líricas más reconocidas (creo que detalla casi al milímetro cada una de sus giras y las vicisitudes y alegrías vividas detrás de escena).
A pesar de que por momentos la autora usa terminología propia del mundo de la ópera, no es necesario ser un aficionado al tema (yo no lo soy, aunque me dieron ganas de entrar un poco a ese mundo) para lograr entender lo que la Callas generaba en el público y cómo sus experiencias vitales se reflejaban en su arte.

This is our book clubs December 2024, selection. It is very slow to ge started. Maria had a very sad life, she was raised by poor parents, it wasn't until she beggan taking singing lessons that her life began to change. She had an exceptional voice, with many ranges. But she was heavy, and had trouble with her vision. So she was not pretty like her sister. Their mother made Jackie become a mistrues to a whealthy man to help support the family. When Maria became a great opera singer, she married an thirty year older then her. He wanted her money, and that is the begginning of this story.

She never had a happy life and in the end every one in her life just used her, and than obed her heirs out of her hard work.

The auhor did a great job of reseaching Marias life.

I do not often read biographies, but this was a fun, light and engaging read. As a fellow American-born-and-raised Greek, I related to much of her life. One of the joys of reading biographies is that you can feel how someone else has navigated challenges in their life. Edwards weaves a story about Maria that gives the reader an opportunity to have sympathy for her, admire her and cheer for her all at once. And when you get a front row seat to the bizarre love triangle between the most famous opera soprano of the 20th century, the world's richest man, and the widow of a slain U.S. president how can you go wrong? Throw in rich historical and cultural context and you are only a step away from great historical fiction.

I read 60% of this book and decided it was enough. I grew tired of the writing, the descriptions felt like I was reading a (bad) novel and weren't relevant for a biography, and I didn't like some rumours she added about her and Onassis. Edwards adds too many theories and personal commentaries which slow everything down and impose her view on every moment of Maria's life.

I want something more informative and to the point, like Klimt's biography by Frank Whitford, which I'm currently reading. I still find Maria Callas a very interesting and inspiring woman and I will try to read other biographies that are more to my taste.

The research for this biography seemed thorough and true. It was absorbing to read of Callas's life which could in itself be a tragic opera. Her commitment to perfection encompassed continual observation and self-education of opera's many vocal, performative, and historic facets, and she was recognized and acclaimed for it. Yet she never was able to escape having been raised and bullied by an egocentric, tyrannical mother. Regardless of her exceptional talent, she continually alternated between her deserved role as a leader in her field and subservience in her private life.

Ona jednak zadowalała się najmniejszymi okruchami jego zainteresowania. Wiele poświęciła dla tej relacji, ale Onassis potraktował ją okrutnie.

Historia Marii Callas ukazuje smutny schemat jej życia. Mimo że była znana na całym świecie, nigdy nie zaznała prawdziwej miłości, co stało się jej największą tragedią. Nie zależało jej na sławie, pieniądzach ani dostatnim życiu. Jedyne, czego pragnęła, to miłość mężczyzny, którego kochała. Niestety los nie oszczędzał jej cierpienia, a przeciwności czaiły się na każdym kroku.

To tragiczna historia, która pokazuje, że pieniądze to nie wszystko, że sława potrafi zmienić człowieka, a prawdziwa miłość jest tylko jedna. Jeśli uwielbiacie opowieści o silnych kobietach, które osiągnęły szczyt, koniecznie sięgnijcie po tę książkę!

An excellent and well-researched biography of the best opera singer of all time. It is tempting to think that her life was easy and that she enjoyed her well-deserved success. Her childhood was not easy and the relationship with her parents was never easy. Additionally, she was obese and not very pretty. She was very insecure, and her desire to feel accepted and loved led her to make poor social, economic, romantic, and personal decisions. In her job and performances, she strove for perfection and always tried to give her best. She died young. It is a pity she lived such a difficult life.

This book is written with great interest and simple language considering the subject of opera and singers can be complicated subjects. Understanding the shipping business has also been made easier to understand, though it is a complex business, especially since it covers the rules and complexities created by international waters and countries.

Love this book, since it goes into detail in Callas’ personal life: the way she was used and manipulated through her life, first by her mother, then her husband, followed by Onassis and finally by her “friend” Vasso. Never thought that someone that looked so accomplished, had so many insecurities that eventually les her to being betrayed by so many.

Maria Callas stanowi uosobienie charyzmy i talentu. Nawet dla osób niezainteresowanych operą jest to nazwisko, które nie jest obce. Dlatego nie dziwi, że tak bardzo chce się poznać jej życie i zrozumieć geniusz tej wielkiej artystki.

Czytając biografię zastanawiałem się jak bardzo stronnicza musi być perspektywa autorki, gdyż z jednej strony przedstawia wydarzenia neutralnie, z drugiej, nie da się ukryć, że Maria jest tym pozytywnym bohaterem pomimo swoich ludzkich niedociągnięć. Autorka portretuje ją jako ofiarę swoich rodziców, ludzi z którymi się stykała, ale też własnego talentu, charakteru i niemożności poradzenia dobie ze swoją ludzką naturą, która nie jest idealna. Charyzma i charakterność na scenie przekładają się na władczość, a wręcz czasem agresywność w życiu codziennym. Nie można nie zauważyć, że duży wpływ miała zaborcza matka i ludzie chcący wykorzystać artystkę do swoich merkantylnych celów.

Edwards kreśli nie tylko wizję diwy ale też całego zepsutego świata wyższych sfer, pełnego patriarchalnych nadużyć i kobiecej delikatności nie mogącej sprostać ostrym wymogom rywalizacji w tym bezdusznym świecie show-biznesu. Sama Callas nie jest bez winy, gdyż momentami zatraca się w świecie powierzchownego powabu i świecącej próżności. Jest to również historia ludzi opętanych pasją, talentem, poświęcających się własnemu rzemiosłu bez cienia wątpliwości, bezapelacyjnie podporządkowując mu całe swoje życie. Są to ludzie egotyczni, narcystyczni, żyjący we własnej bańce pozornego sukcesu, acz w samotności liżący rany niejednej porażki.

Czytało się tę książkę wyśmienicie. Bardzo dobra biografia. Polecam.

Życie Callas nie było usłane różami. Urodziła się w biednej Grecji, wyemigrowała do Stanów, gdzie po kilku latach została zmuszona doi powrotu do ojczyzny. Tam pod osłoną wojny szkoliła swój talent przy okazji przyśpiewując okupującym Grecję żołnierzom włoskim i niemieckim. Niemal przez cały okres szkolenia głosu była pulchnym dzieckiem, a potem kobietą z krągłościami. Jednak posiadała talent tak wielki, że wszystkie jej grzeszki przeszłości zakopano pod grubą warstwą historii. Wszyscy chcieli jej słuchać! Callas szybko stała się natchnieniem dla znanych kompozytorów i reżyserów. Była muzą dla artystów, ozdobą bogatych i wpływowych ludzi. Sama związała się z jednym z najbogatszych oligarchów - Arystotelesem Onassisem. Callas posiadała dar przemawiania, hipnotyzowania widzów poprzez śpiewanie. Dziś jest już legendą, o której pamiętają nieliczni.

W swojej książce Anne Edwards opisuje rzetelnie życie diwy dokładnie przeczesując jej historię i dementując pomówienia skierowane pod jej adresem. Niestety, nie tylko plotki z gazet, ale również skierowane pod jej adresem kłamstwa wypowiedziane ustami własnej matki. Co zrozumiałem wzbudzała zazdrość swoją urodą, bogactwem i popularnością.

Anne Edwards wykonała bardzo dobrą pracę na rzecz popularyzacji opery. Autorka przeanalizowała niezliczone źródła, przeprowadzała wywiady z ludźmi znającymi diwę, słuchała i oglądała wszystkie materiały dotyczące śpiewaczki. Sama także widziała ją na żywo w londyńskiej Royal Opera House, ale jej książka to nie tylko zbiór suchych faktów na temat śpiewaczki. Edwards podzieliła ją na 26 rozdziałów, każdemu przypisując jeden etap z życia Callas. Możemy zatem krok po kroku poznawać jej historię jednocześnie zapoznając się z cytatami osób, którym dane było wówczas śledzić jej życie. Pracę Edwards uwiarygodniają wspomnienia wielkich ludzi, z którymi pracowała, ale także wzmianki znajomych i rodziny. Dzięki temu mamy wgląd nie tylko w znane z życia fakty, ale również w dramaty życia domowego, jakie niewątpliwie były udziałem prywatnego życia diwy. Jej historia jest dowodem na to, że wielcy ludzie najczęściej bywają samotni. Marię oszukano nie raz, okradano z kosztowności, honorariów, oszczędności. Pazerność najbliższych nasiliła się jeszcze bardziej po jej odejściu. Historia ostatnich lat życia diwy i po jej śmierci oraz podziału i zarządzania majątkiem trwała lata i położyła się cieniem na pamięci o Marii Callas.

Maria Callas może i nie miała najwspanialszego głosu XX wieku, ale z pewnością była najwybitniejszą wykonawczynią operową. Jej wkład w operę pomógł na zawsze zmienić jej oblicze. Edwards wykonała zadanie na piątkę. Udało się jej przywrócić do życia tą Callas, jaką była naprawdę. Stworzyła głęboki i wiarygodny portret śpiewaczki. Zdecydowanie jedna z lepszych biografii jakie czytałem - rzetelna i dobrze skonstruowana opowieść o kobiecie, która osiągnęła wszystko na polu zawodowym, ale nie potrafiła sobie poradzić w życiu prywatnym. Gorąco polecam. Znajomość opery nie jest obowiązkowa.

Maria, I have loved you since the first note. While I have a collection of your vinyl records and have seen countless recorded performances, I did not truly understand the true depths of your life until I read this novel. Anne Edwards should be commended for her sensational telling of the story of the greatest singer to ever live. While her life was filled with heartbreak, betrayal, and illness, the world never stopped loving her, not truly, even when she could not sing as canaries do. Rest in peace, Maria.

Callas is fascinating to me and I'll read anything I can get my hands on about her. I read this one some time ago, but I remember being exasperated and enthralled by turns. Edwards makes some pretty huge leaps with her theories. But its still a nice, juicy read.
