The planet had died once before. On the day of Despaira, a god appeared in the sky and saved the world. His name was King Shishioh. But now with the throne of the king empty, a viscious battle between two brothers is unfolding. Who will ascend the throne?
Makoto Tateno is an extremely prolific mangaka, having created 30+ series of manga in both the shoujo and BL genres. However, she is probably most well known amongst English-speaking audiences for her yaoi series “Yellow,” published by DMP. She debuted in 1986 with the short story "Yuraete Tamago Boys," published by Hana to Yume.
Owned for years. Why? I don’t know because I’m not a fan of Makota Tateno’s art style. And I’m not crazy over sci fi. This lost me a few pages in at the immaculate conception.
This is manga, which means, graphic novel (black and white comic book). Don't buy expecting prose.
I wouldn't buy this unless I saw it for $1 somewhere, but as a borrowed read that took maybe 30 minutes, it was ok. You have two brothers with godlike powers. One is good, one is evil. They've had many lives and have spent those lives fighting, with the good one always prevailing and taking the throne. With the start of this book, however, something has disrupted the cosmos and the evil one might get the throne instead. In the meantime, the good one keeps on being reborn and then evading his confrontation with his brother by dying early. So the evil brother, tired of these evasions, adopts the good brother when he's still very young (new incarnation). In the process of raising his little brother, some of his enmity wanes and it becomes unclear whether they'll battle yet again or find another way.
I recall the art being decent, and considering how much of the story I remember, I guess it was interesting and heartwarming enough to stick with me. There were elements of shounen-ai, that is, the brothers loving each other in a slightly off way. However, I only picked up on that because I know the genre. It was innocent enough that anyone who hasn't guzzled lots of way less normal stuff would probably not notice.
Meh. Platonic brocest. Not my cup of tea. The plot was super confusing, too, and honestly creepy. A “good god” and a “bad god” are brothers... they duel and then whoever wins, earns the “King’s Soul” as a reward... the loser enters a “deep sleep,” and when the winner’s son is born (conceived with a woman whose only purpose is to have the winning god’s child), the losing god wakes up to battle the offspring of the winning god to see if he can win the King’s soul back.
Except the brothers fall in love with each other...? And the good king decides not to fight his brother because he loves his brother... so he kills himself to purposefully lose the duel but keep the soul... and is reborn (immaculate conception). Except the women who bear him (the three times he lost the duel on purpose) are women that he loved as an adult...
Eh. Weirdly incestuous and just bizarre overall. No thanks.

I really like Makoto Tateno's work and so I borrowed this from the library. However, it really fell short. The illustrations weren't that great and the story didn't make a heck of a lot of sense. I liked the general idea behind it, but I don't think it was executed well (also a little creepy that ). Also, it is not yaoi even though it proclaims itself to be :/
I have a habit of stumbling upon brocest when I'm drawn in by an interesting plot. The premise was there but it needed more substance instead of being just one volume. There could have been better development
This is not quite what I was expecting, but was enjoyable anyway. If you can get past the bit of repetitiveness that starts each chapter, it was pretty decent.
Labeled as Yaoi, this fantasy manga is a little misleading (I wouldn't even rate it BL). The relationship or feelings between the brothers might appear incenstuous but to me it didn't feel like that kind of love-except for the cute illustrations included in the Afterword.
As always, Tateno-sensei manages to mix in a little of everything; action, drama, love/hate relationship issues, gorgeous characters and illustrations and an entertaining/interesting story. I was a little disappointed at the lack of boys' love but I still managed to enjoy this manga; I guess the two brothers sort of grew on me, I liked their ending.
An odd one-off from Tateno more in keeping with Red Angel than her more popular yaoi titles. This one has two brother gods in eternal struggle. Luke keeps committing suicide and being reborn on Earth via immaculate conception rather than fight with (and either kill or be killed by) his brother Malchus. Very little proper yaoi content, this one's all about the relationship between the two brothers. Odd an repetetive story. Lovely artwork you come to expect from Tateno, but not one of my favourite titles.
