Psikolojik-seinen olduğunu her cümlesiyle hissettiriyordu.
'ES : Eternal Sabbath' by Fuyumi Soryo was the first manga comic I ever got. I never got around to reading it. Today, finally, I did.
A nameless protagonist starts telling us the story. He is a young man. He tells us that he can get into other people's minds, manipulate and change their thoughts, make them think that he is one of their friends. But he doesn't do any harm. He is mostly indifferent to what is happening around. Sometimes he is curious. Very rarely, he intervenes in a situation to do something good. When he intervenes in a particular case, the affected person ends up in a hospital. As the case is strange it is investigated by the researchers in the medical university. Kujyou, who is a talented researcher is assigned this task. She discovers that our nameless narrator is involved in this. And she tracks him down. And sparks fly. You should read the book to find out what happens next.
'ES' was a breezy read. The pages just flew, and before I knew, I had reached the last page. The artwork was beautiful, especially the pages depicting dreams and people's minds and the feelings and desires inside them. The narrator and Kujyou were fascinating characters. There were some fascinating revelations in the end and there were also a few open ends which makes us want to read the next part.
I forgot how good "ES: Eternal Sabbath" opens. Fuyumi Soryo covers everything that needs to be established for the story. There is ES (aka Ryousuke for this volume) and Mine. He has the power to get into a person's mind and manipulate it. He's not really a bad guy and not really a good guy. He's ambiguous yet charismatic question mark. Then there is Mine, who works as a brain researcher. She's an oddball herself. He doesn't even notice her when their paths cross but she notices him. Being an oddball, she searches him out and her life won't be the same after that.
It has been a long time since I read this series. It was originally published in Japan starting in 2002 and then Del Rey brought it over in 2006. It is a series that is only available in manga as it never got an anime adaptation which is odd because it seems like it would be perfect for the Noitamina block. The pacing is great. The characters are ridiculously attractive. The plot is layered but still easy to follow and, most importantly, it would still work today. Maybe one day, it will get its adaptation. Until then, I'm re-reading. At 8 volumes, it is an easy commitment.
This was a great start to the series. The art when Akiba/ES/Shuro explores mindscapes is gorgeous and the manifestation of his powers is fascinating. At this point, I'm not sure who to trust but I'm excited to find out where this goes.
A mysterious person who can manipulate the minds of others seems to wander aimlessly, altering the thoughts and fates of those he encounters arbitrarily. But when he runs into one of the few people who he can't affect, something strange happens - he finds this person interesting...
I read Eternal Sabbath as part of a book challenge and didn't know much about it going in. I'm delighted to have found what seems to be a captivating, character driven paranormal story with heavy sci-fi and mystery elements. The two main characters are highly intriguing, and this first volume sets up a good amount of groundwork for future developments while keeping things moving at a nice clip. I can't describe the story in more detail without getting into spoilers, so I'll simply say I enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading more.
The art isn't spectacular nor elaborate, but is solid and suits the story. Characters are distinct, consistently drawn and easily identifiable, and the straightforward style lets the artist really make an impact when called for.
Overall ES Vol. 1 is a strong start to what looks to be a great series.
12/2012
Edit 1/8/2015: Just as intriguing on subsequent reads, and there's some interesting foreshadowing I'm picking up on now that I know where the series is heading.
first off.. my thoughts on the book: art work is as per-usual very good, the story is very catchy, which I know to some people that's completely irrelevant, but usually when I am sitting here reading a manga it takes me not long to read, where as with this series so far its taken me half an hour.
synopsis of the story: Ryousuke Akiba or Shuro, or ES (Eternal Sabbath) is a human who was genetically created in a hygenic's lab in order to study eternal youth. Ryousuke will live to be at least two decades old, possessing strange mental powers, entering peoples minds, discovering their deepest darkest secrets, and ever rearrange a persons memories for survival instincts, getting people to act as though he were a friend or a family member, as he wanders the streets of Tokyo for reasons unknown only to him, no one recognizes him until he meets a woman researcher Dr. Mine Kujyou, a determined researcher who challenges everything she knows about science.
I bought and read this manga 20 years ago and it's been sitting on my shelf ever since. I've been thinking about getting rid of it but figured I should reread before deciding! This is a fun opening volume with a very slow, mysterious build up, only revealing the actual premise in the final pages. I remember the story feeling mature to me as a teen, but now it mainly seems soapy and a little ridiculous. Still fun though!
Awal yg menarik. Seorang pemuda misterius dg kekuatan PSI.
Very interesting story! I loved the manga Mars from the same artist/author and absolutely loved it so I recognize the drawing style which is amazingly beautiful yet simple. Definitely going to continue on with this :)
What if mind control was real? What if what you see and remember could be altered at a whim? With very clean, almost sterile, art, the artist shows us the real world ramifications in a story that quickly becomes disturbing and deeply personal at the same time.
Great start to a series Only 8 books long but please be advised the last vol is very expensive so don't get into this series unless your ok with paying an arm and a leg for it.
J'AI PROFITÉ DE #RESTECHEZTOIAVECUNMANGA DONT GLÉNAT FAIT PROFITER POUR LIRE LE PREMIER TOME DE ETERNAL SABBATH AUJOURD'HUI. J'AI LU LE RESTE DES TITRES DE FUYUMI SORYO, IL NE MANQUAIS QUE CETTE SÉRIE, QUE J'AI BEAUCOUP AIMÉ. LÀ ON EST ENCORE DANS UN AUTRE GENRE, PLUS FUTURISTE ET TORTUEUX. ON A ENCORE DES PERSONNAGES AUX CARACTÈRES ET À LA PHILOSOPHIE BIEN À EUX, SONT-ILS BON OU MAUVAIS, DIFFICILE A DIRE POUR LE MOMENT. QUAND À L'INTRIGUE PERSO C'EST EXACTEMENT CE QUI ME PLAIT, ÇA ME DONNE VRAIMENT ENVIE DE LIRE LA SÉRIE ENTIÈRE.
Originality Being able to alter a person's memories isn't terribly new. Furthermore, the unveiling of the cause of the main character's psychic powers lacks enough in-depth reasoning to be able to suspend one's disbelief. Artwork Clear, realistic and professional artwork. Excellent surrealistic images. Story Took just a little while longer than usual to get going in the beginning, but it picked up after the introduction of the second major character. However, the conflict between these two characters has only been just begun when important characters and motivations are introduced and then the book just ends. On an aside, background was provided in a blasé info-dump--in fact, these info-dumps occurred a little too often. Characterization The main character is interesting but still flat; he performs good deeds that are at the same time self-serving. With such amazing powers, he still doesn't go out of his way to help people. The second major character is a trope of the objective, socially challenged, genius scientist but adds needed sympathy to the character landscape. Summary The story has potential, but isn't executed that well. It's difficult to develop a morally ambiguous and mysterious person as the main character from the get-go without going into his motivations or developing a solid conflict to drive the story forward, neither of which is accomplished sufficiently.
What can I say? I'm really into it. The characters are interesting, the pacing is good and the drawings are gorgeous. I've also never seen anything quite like ES's powers before (if you have, let me know: I want to read more like this). I really must pick up the rest of this series.

20 June 2023: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love love LOVE the opening chapter, it's absolutely perfect in idea and execution. 10/10.
In chapter two a new protagonist is introduced, and I wasn't sure about that at first because I enjoyed the vibe of the prologue so much. But I like her a lot, she's a character with strengths and flaws and I admire her curiosity and determination. I want her to live, I want her to thrive, I want her to be okay.
Thing I don't like about this series so far is, it's trying to tell us a lot of info really fast. My personal advice as an editor would be: don't mention Isaac in volume one, focus on the relationship between ES and Kujyou. ES is scary because he can do whatever he wants, but he's not an outright villain - trying to find the lines he will and won't cross is something they could have explored for a couple more chapters. With the outright proof of the existence of the Isaac character, ES immediately seems like far less of a scary presence, because we instinctively know that Isaac is probably much scarier. It's just kinda a waste of potential, really.
Still, you absolutely need to read this prologue, I swear. I'm feeling things and that's always a good sign with media these days!
