And so I start on the next instalment of the discovery and exploration series - these are the readers digest versions from 1979 although the originals are from 1971.

Now the intriguing thing here is that I thought that I would struggle with them as they are so dated - the books scream it from the style of print and the photography to the actual smell of the books themselves.

However the more I read of them the more I realise that is part of their charm. They are charting the history of exploration- times long since lost. Something that is brought in to clear contrast when you realise that some of the details the author openly admits may be in doubt since accurate details and records do not exist or have been lost.

But here is the thing - I look at some of the images and realise that they are referring to locations and countries which even today no long exist - after all from the time of the printing in 1979 to now we are talking 40 years and when you stop and think about it a lot has happened.

So when I look at a picture of historic building from a city sacked by genghis khan it suddenly hits me that the city itself may no longer recognisable from modern changes and developments - and it brings it all in to focus how much history is there is around us and how easily it is to lose it.
