About the author

Paul Shipton (born 1963) is an award-winning children's author.

He was born in Manchester and attended Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and Manchester University. After completing two Masters' degrees (in Classics and Philosophy), he taught English in Istanbul for a year. After returning to the UK, he taught English as a foreign language for several years, and it was around this time that he published his first book, Zargon Zoo (1991).

Four years later, he published Bug Muldoon and the Garden of Fear, and relocated with his family to Wisconsin, United States, where he works as a freelance writer and editor. He also writes books for younger readers under the pen name Paul Cooper. He and his wife and two daughters now divide their time between Cambridge, England, and Madison, Wisconsin.

dieses buch erfüllt alle ansprüche, die ich an einen guten krimi habe. hier meine ansprüche:

1) spannende geschichte, mehrschichtige charaktere
2) ein käfer mit trockenem roman–noir–voice, der als privatdetektiv fälle löst und viel über das leben nachdenkt
3) süße illustrationen

It is an utter travesty that these books were never bigger than they were! Shipton NAILS the noir voice and the story is compelling as hell. I first read this as a child and then again as an adult, and it works on both levels - there's noir-related stuff that you'll only pick up on as an adult but the narrative is strong enough for children to be able to read it as a straightforward adventure.

It's a wee bit scary right enough. And obviously if you're scared of insects/spiders/anything creepy or crawly, then there's that to contend with. But it does depend - I'm terrified of wasps and I managed.

This was even better than 'Bug Muldoon and the Garden of Fear'. In addition to being genuinely funny and well-plotted, it was really profound. I know. It's a book about a private detective who is also a beetle. His best friend is a sugar-addicted house-fly and the love interest is a grasshopper. But seriously, it's been a long while since I've read an adults' book that managed a more perfectly balanced and poignant reflection on life and death.

Eine wirklich schöne Fortsetzung zu Band eins, und außerdem auch ein echt schöner Abschluss für die ganze Geschichte. Sehr spannend, für ein Kinderbuch teilweise wieder sehr düster (beides vermutlich sogar mehr als Band eins, auch wenn ich mich so gut an den leider nicht mehr erinnere), und das ganze wieder gemischt mit Humor (auch wenn mir der etwas weniger vorkam) und einer ganzen Menge sehr sympathischer Figuren.
Hat wirklich sehr viel Spaß gemacht, und ich konnte gar nicht schnell genug durch das Buch kommen, weil ich unbedingt wissen wollte, wie es weitergeht, und wie die Geschichte endet, und insgesamt war es einfach wieder ein tolles Buch.
Echt gut und würde ich auf jeden Fall weiterempfehlen!

Comprato al mercatino per un euro, come spesso accade (perchè ancora non hanno capito che nelle serie sarebbe bene mettere un numero sul dorso) ho preso il secondo volume della serie.
Poco male, non ci sono tanti riferimenti al volume precedente.
Storia molto carina, all'inizio parte un po' lentamente, ma poi ingrana alla grande quando gli insetti si recano nella casa e hanno a che fare con gli umani.
Diventa avventuroso, avvincente e coinvolgente, quindi lo promuovo.
