These were Newbery Award winners that I liked some of and a few I didn't quite enjoy as much as others. I'm hoping to read all the Newbery books and this was a good collection. Will definitely buy to own someday to add to my other Newbery books I have. 3 ⭐
Mostly marking that I read this, though I couldn't tell you the exact year- it's the reason why The Tombs of Atuan is the only Earthsea I've read, though I should really get back to the series as a whole. I remember Caddie Woodlawn a little bit, and that I liked the Zilpha Keatley Snyder stuff as a middle grade reader but idk otherwise.
A chapter from fifteen Newbery Award winning books. Times have changed since this award was first given in 1922. I must admit, some books (chapters only) dragged a little for me while others were immediately engaging. I question how genres seem to appear and disappear...like dystopian literature. I haven't looked to see if anything in that genre has been chosen as a Newbery winner. It was fun and rewarding to see the "strengths" of these fifteen Newberry girls.
Our power was off all day and I loved the chance to finally read this. Several books were new to me and I will be reading them soon. Hitty has been my favorite book for most of my life and I was happy to find other books to enjoy, as well as some to skip. If you love good children's lit, this is a pleasant group of award winners to review.
Even as a young reader, I responded best to stories featuring intrepid female protagonists -- I sought them out. The characters, and the novels that influenced me, are well represented in this volume.
I’d read about half the books featured in this collection, a lot of early Newberry winners took place in colonial times (unsurprising), and I do want to read some of these books in full, as well as re-read ones I haven’t read in awhile.
I really enjoyed reading these excerpts from Newbery Award winning books featuring girls. I had read some of these books before but some I hadn't. Inspired me to read the full length versions of some of these books.
