The beginning was a good start then it went a little down hill from there. I really liked both the hero's and heroines characters but they bickered too much for me. The ending was good as was the bit of action that the story had. The loves scenes where not as hot as most of Mary Wines book's are but they were still well done. All and all I did like this book.

Mary Wine is a skillful storyteller who creates romantic tales full of intrigue, love and just enough flare of drama to keep readers flipping the pages.

Brina Chattan is the youngest of the Chattan daughters. Promised to the church, Brina knows her purpose in life. Of three daughters, Brina has easily accepted the reality of her father’s promise to the abbey. Though she is feisty and strong-willed, Brina believes that she will bring some good to the church and Scotland. But when her sister Deirdre, who is promised to marry Connor Lindsey, escapes one night to seek passion in the arms of a Douglas man, the life Brina has grown to know changes forever. Connor has his own agenda for marrying a Chattan daughter. His sister has been abducted by the Douglas clan and they refuse to return her. He needs to form strong reputable relationships with the other Highlanders and the Chattan clan is just where he wants to start. But after he discovers Deirdre has betrayed him, he sets off to secure his alliance even if it means stealing the bride of Christ himself.

On her way to the abbey with her father, Brina is stolen from her clan by Laird Lindsey. She is shocked that a man would dare commit such a crime to gain an allegiance. She demands and fights to be taken to the abbey to become a nun but Connor refuses. He is surprised to learn firsthand that Brina is a hellcat, not a woman to be taken lightly.

For the better part of the book, the two remain in a constant battle. She refuses to relent to be his wife, and he refuses to return her back to her father. The alpha male and the hellcat made for some interesting scenes. I enjoyed the banter and quick dialogue between the characters.

Since Brina has been raised to prepare herself for the church, she has never had certain luxuries in life. When she arrives at the Lindsey compound, she has to adapt to being waited on and being viewed as the mistress of the house. I love how she slowly becomes exposed to the real world and enjoys the simple treasures of life.

The first touch of his lips was soul shattering. She jerked, her hands coming up to plant solidly against his chest and push with every ounce of strength that she had. She twisted her face away from his, escaping from the kiss for a moment.

“No one has ever kissed me!” she shrieked, unable to remain composed. She struck out at him, her nails trying to find something soft to dig into.”

“A fact that needs changing.”

Though Connor is a true alpha male, he realizes Brina is not only innocent in flesh but innocent to the world at large. I appreciated that he is strong-willed, making sure Brina knows he will not change his mind, but his approach to getting her to agree to be his bride is slow.

In spite of her temper, his voice remained controlled and husky. He leaned down and placed another soft kiss against her cheek. “Admit that ye enjoy it, Brina. I swear that I do as well, for ye lips are as sweet as honey.”

She shivered, the dark promise in his voice threatening to lure her away like a fairy song from legend.

“But… it’s… sinful…”

The love scenes are beautiful and descriptive. Connor is skillful in making sure Brina enjoys the passions between the sheets.

If you enjoy a good Highland story, then Highland Hellcat is worth picking up.

Brina Chattan has spent her whole life preparing to be a nun, while her two sisters would be wed to powerful members of neighboring clans. When her sister, Dierdre, has an affair before her marriage, her betrothed finds out. Connor, the Lindsey laird, doesn't want a disgraced bride, so he steals Brina while on her way to the abbey. Brina fights Connor every step of the way, but she can't deny her attraction to him. When they arrive at his home and she's spoiled by the luxuries she never would have had at the abbey, she starts to question the life that has always been set out for her.

I really liked Brina, she was so independent and struggled to accept Connor's help with anything because she'd never been given the luxury of having anyone to lean on before. Her whole life, she'd watched her sisters wear pretty dresses and have their hair fixed but she was never able to have those things. She was so strong because she never complained about her place in life. It was so interesting to see her eyes opened to how nice the little luxuries in life were. I also liked that Connor loved to give her those things she'd never had, making her life as comfortable as possible.

I loved how every time Brina thought she would irritate Connor by acting like a screaming "hellcat," that he actually liked it! It was really funny to me how it just made him chase after her more.

I was a little impatient at first because the hero and heroine didn't meet each other until 50 or so pages into the book. Once they met, there was a lot of focus on the romance though.

This one wasn't really my style of romance. I think my biggest hurdle to really enjoying this one was what I felt were unkind attitudes towards women. I'm not a stickler for historical accuracies when it comes to attitudes and values-I want girl power! There was foul language and a lot of the story revolved around Deirdre being a disgrace for not being a virgin bride, and then of course the stealing of Brina.

Overall, this was a nice historical romance but I wanted more respect towards the women in the book.

In Highland Hellcat, our story sets off with our heroine Brina Chattan is the youngest of three daughters, and her duty is to go to the Convent and be a bride of the Church. She has always known that this is her duty and honor. She never had the opportunities that her sisters did, not even to be touched by family. She has never known physical affection, or a loving embrace from her sisters or father. When her older sister breaks a betrothal contract by sleeping with another man, Connor Lindsey, the highlander her sister was promised to comes for her, kidnaps her and takes her back to his clan. Brina knows that with her plans for the convent gone, she isn’t going to be tame and sedate like she has been trained for all her life. She is a fighter and has always had a free spirit, and Connor will soon learn that she isn’t easy prey.

What a story this turned out to be!!! I have avoided reading this one for a while ever since I bought it at my library store for $1 (and the best dollar I have ever spent money on for sure!!) What I really adored about this story was seeing these two go at it like cats and dogs and the chemistry!! Oh man, can Mary Wine write some sensual encounters and the kissing scenes is phenomenal. Anyone who has read this author before, knows exactly what I am talking about. The more I read Mary Wine, the more I fall in love with her writing and her love stories. In this book, we have a heroine that is spirited and independent and a hard worker. Our hero is your typical highlander, but I loved how amused he was by Brina’s antics and temper she lets out whenever he is around. It was interesting to see the aspects of history that this author puts in. I love the Stewart Era, and Mary Wine’s talent for writing only intrigues you more with this setting.

I’ve been wonderfully surprised with these Highlander books by Mary Wine. These are the first of her books I’ve read, and now I’d like to pick up others from her backlist. She has a wide variety to choose from. But I’m glad to find another author who writes intriguing Scottish Highlanders. That’s including heroines, despite my love of a totally alpha hero.

Connor has an agreement with the Chattan laird, needing the alliance to strengthen his backing for the eventual release of his young sister, who was stolen years before by the Douglas clan. That agreement is for marriage to one of the laird’s daughters. Everything goes wrong when the intended daughter believes herself in love with someone else and she flees in the dark of night to meet him. Connor is intent on keeping their agreement, and when the opportunity to resolve the whole mess is introduced to him, he doesn’t hesitate - he absconds with Brina, the youngest Chattan and the only daughter to be promised to the church, plucks her right from her father’s grasp as they’re on their way to leave Brina with the sisters. Her situation matters not to Connor. He knows, during and after the journey to his home, that he and his newly acquired hellcat can have a good life together.

Never having been away from her home or so near a man like she’s been to Connor, Brina is finding it more and more difficult to resist his charms. And she does try. Her entire life has been devoted to the restrictions of the church, so she’s overloaded with emotion and all kinds of stimulation. I wouldn’t have lasted a second if I’d been the recipient of Connor’s stimulation. Brina takes resistance to a whole new level. She also wants to honor her father and his word to the church. Her eventual future would be to become Mother Superior, but keeping this braw Highlander at bay is beyond her. Though after a while she doesn’t wish to. All the while with Connor, fighting everything he throws at her for all she’s worth, Brina’s spunk and sass never wanes. Of course, that’s something Connor loves about her. I could say that Brina can try until doom’s day to resist Connor and she’ll never win, however, I think it’s Connor who’d better watch out.

What’s also very intriguing with this story is the way Ms. Wine has used Scottish politics of the time, including throwing about clout with the King and even taking our characters to court to have their fate decided, once a so-called friend of Connor’s goes too far in trying to keep peace in the Highlands. Brina is torn from Connor and he takes chase, acknowledging his feelings for her are something more than lust and will allow no one to take what’s his. Brina, in the meantime, keeps her head about her and aids Connor in bringing his family back together without nary a thought to herself.

This has been a fun, charming, interesting, mysterious, and very romantic serious so far, and I’m looking forward to the books that will follow. Ms. Wine does one heck of a terrific job writing my Highlanders.

If I had to describe this book in one word I'd simply say boring. The story picks up in the last 50 pages but too little too late. I couldn't really connect with the characters. I think it may be a case of "it's me not you" and it's not really the book's fault.

Highland Hellcat
3.5 Stars

Intent on forming alliances to protect his clan, Laird Connor Lindsey has entered into a betrothal contract with Deidre Chattan. But when Deidre breaks her vow, Connor kidnaps her sister, Brina, in her place. Promised to the church from birth, Brina Chattan, has been trained to be self-sufficient and has no intention of being docile or subservient. Connor will have his hands full with a wildcat for a wife . . .

Series note: Although this is book #2 in the trilogy, the only connection is the setting in the aftermath of the assassination of King James I of Scotland. Only the hero, Connor, and his friend, Quenton Cameron, make brief appearances in book #1, but these are unrelated to the plot here. As such, this installment can be read as a standalone.

Connor and Brina's romance follows the same formula as the couple in book #1. Connor abducts Brina and takes her to his fortress in the highlands of Scotland where he seduces her and attempts to convince her to marry him.

While their interactions are sexy and sensual, the pacing is slow in the first half and the emotional connection is lacking. Moreover, although Brina is not pliant or obedient, she is far from the shrewish hellcat implied in the title, and the fact that she is "a consolation prize" is glossed over very easily. The action picks up in the second-half and the climax and resolution are intense and exciting.

The final installment focuses on the third Laird, Quenton Cameron, who is more of a diplomat than the other two, and there are already hints of his romance with Deidre Chattan in this book.

The starting was great and all but it started to go downhill mainly because I did not like the heroine and her going on about keeping her promises & not marrying Connor. At first, they bickered a lot and it amused me but after a while, they still did not stop because the heroine was so stubborn and I just got so tired of that.

Connor was nice and all, despite him kidnapping Brina against her wishes. He can be fierce at times, but at the very least, he was not cruel to brina. He was very caring towards her. I liked his sense of humor when conversing with Brina and that he’s a nice character.

The love scenes were enjoyable. It was hot.

Alas, I couldn’t fully enjoy this book due to the unlovable heroine & the draggy parts of the fighting/clan wars and whatnot.

In Highland Hellcat, Mary Wine introduces the three Chattan daughters. The romantic lead is the third daughter of Laird Chattan - the daughter promised to the Church at birth and raised to be self-sufficient, independent and to do without praise. All her life, her family and clan have been careful not to spoil her - she's rarely complimented, always worn white and rarely given physical affection all to get her ready for the spartan existence expected of nuns.

But when her eldest sister elopes with a Douglas, her sister's betrothed retaliates by taking Laird Chattan's third daughter. Suddenly, Brina goes from the soon-to-be bride of Christ to the heavily guarded soon-to-be bride of Laird Lindsay.

Connor Lindsay is tall, well built, blond, and accustomed to hardship. His parents weren't wed when he was born and he had a difficult childhood. By the time he was finally recognized as Laird, his character was set. Much like Brina, he was raised not to complain and to look to the good of the clan before his own personal wants. The alliance with Laird Chattan brings him the backing of two strong clans and he can't afford to lose his Chattan bride. Connor admires Brina's filial devotion and her desire to obey her father's will. He also respects her honesty, integrity and commitment to the Church. But he's noticed that she's spirited and beautiful and would make him an ideal wife. He's not willing to give her up.

In Highland Hellcat Mary Wine delivers a delightful period adventure with romance, humor, and adventure. It's a fun, satisfying read!

Readers first met the hero, Connor Lindsey, in To Conquer a Highlander where he was a charismatic rogue who was setting off to claim his rumored wayward betrothed bride. This book, Highland Hellcat, begins with Connor finding that his bride is no longer pure and in a dilemma of how to keep a critical clan alliance while satisfying the demands of the clan that relies on him to lead them during precarious times.

I was looking forward to this story because of the hero....to see him get his day in the sun so to speak...going from an intriguing secondary character to primary hero. Unfortunately, I felt that Connor took the backseat to his heroine Brina, and the book focused more on her and her motivations than Connor's. I was disappointed that so much of the focus of the book was on Brina....even though I did like her as a heroine.

Much of the story is dedicated to Brina, and her unwavering belief that she cannot marry Connor (even though she grows to love him) without her father's consent and be able to keep her honor. Honor is very important to Brina. Honor, honor, honor. By the end of the book I wanted her to throw her honor out the window. I was frustrated by the need to reiterate this again and again. Instead I wished the reader would have been given more moments where Brina realized the freedom that fate has gifted her with instead of being given to a convent. I wanted her to realize that her training to become a mother superior wasn't in vain, that she could employ that training as the laird's wife...and all of the power and good she could do in that role. Brina fought so hard against marrying Connor to save her honor, that she seemed to have missed the point that she could have her cake (Connor) and eat it too (power and importance of a mother superior in her role as laird's wife). I wanted her to waiver more between her love vs her honor. If she couldn't have both I wanted her to choose Connor...I didn't come away from the story convinced of that.

Because Connor was born out of wedlock (but to two loving parents who later married) his illegitimacy, and his need to prove to his people that he is the right man to lead his clan, he needed to have a wife whose purity was above reproach. However, by capturing Brina and taking her outside of the bonds of marriage, could cause any children that they could be subjected to the same stigma and treatment Connor himself received...and what he was so desperate to avoid in his own marriage and offspring. In the end he goes against what he feels that his clan needs because he loved her...at least that is what I am assuming because this was barely addressed in the book, but felt that it should have played a larger part in the story since he refused to marry Brina's sister because of her impurity. I felt that it at least should have held the same amount of importance as Brina's honor.

Besides those two sticking points, I really enjoyed the historical tidbits that were interwoven into the story. Bath houses, the political unrest at the time due to a king that was a child, the importance of the role of each daughter born to man such as a laird. I wanted to like Highland Hellcat more than I actually did. I couldn't wait to read Connor's story, but after reading it I was completely indifferent to him as a hero in Hellcat. In the end too much of the story revolved around Brina's honor, and since she was the main focus of the story I didn't feel like she grew enough as a heroine to make up for the lack of character in Connor, which is why I felt this was just an average romance with little to set it above a mediocre love story...I was saddened by that.

This is book 2 in a series of highlanders, but you can just jump right in here. The hero in this book is mentioned in book 1 since he is a friend of that hero, but the couple from book 1 is not mentioned here. Only the hero that will be in book 3. So, no OCD troubles, you all know I like to talk about that.

Connor Lindsay is planned to marry Deirdre Chattan, but she has been naught and he is upset but still need the alliance but without people doubting if his children are his. So he does what every good highlander would do, kidnaps her virtuous sister that is on her way to a convent. Sparks will fly.

Yay more bride stealing business, this one should be called the bride stealing series. I do like those rugged highlanders stealing brides, but only if they are nice to them. And Connor at once see that Brina is more than just a meek woman raised to be a nun, she can hunt, and she is a hellcat. But at the same time she has learnt nothing about men, and every touch makes her skittish. But who would not melt when a handsome man in a kilt sets out to seduce her, and he is so honourable too, he wants to marry her, but it's she who says no. She has promised her father to become a nun. I do like that it's he who wants her so much, and she who wants to keep that promise.

A lot of other things are happening too, her father is upset, a daughter of his must become a bride of Christ, one sister is not happy about her upcoming marriage, there is the Deirdre scandal (and she is the heroine of book 3, I wonder if her man will steal her away). A neighbouring clan has Connor's sister captive, and he fears they will attack his lands. But mostly it is a about a woman and a man, falling in love, finding passion, and trying to figure out how they can be together.

The negative part is the trouble I have with most Scottish Highlander books, the accent, kind of wish that would be skipped.

Other than that is was a romantic, and sometimes steamy book. It goes without saying, a highlander is a devil in bed. And a hellcat, she takes some time to be tamed.

Final thoughts: A good story about a highlander stealing his bride.

I was having one of those drab days and I didn't really know what to do to lift my mood. Then I spotted a copy of Highland Hellcat . I thought to myself that a man in a kilt and a little romance might be just the remedy I needed.

"Come, my beauty, we shall see if we can impress anyone tonight with our skill."

What a leading first line. Author Mary Wine had my attention. I was envisioning a darkly handsome highlander whispering those words to a bevy of buxom barmaids. Not to be, these were the very words of Brina Chattan, soon to be nun, the third daughter of Robert Chattan, Laird of Chattan Castle. As I continued to read I became intrigued by this young woman who had grown up knowing that she was to become a nun and was destined to become the mother superior. Yes, Brina is a strong willed, and very capable young woman, but what's she doing in a romance. I kept reading and very quickly the plot started to unveil some unseemly events involving one of her elder sisters.

From this point on I couldn't read fast enough. I had an inkling of an impending change in Brina's future, but couldn't guess how it was going to come about. Then I met Connor Lindsey, Laird of Clan Lindsay, and promised Brina's sister Deirdre in marriage. I felt a sympathy for Connor from the moment he was introduced. I was firmly on his side and knew that he would do what ever was required to avenge his honour and that of his clan.

Brina and Connor were both characters with strong personalities that would lead to clashes and adventure, perfect for what I needed from this book. I wasn't disappointed. There were several unexpected twists and turns in the plot that kept this book from being predictable. At those points I couldn't figure out how Ms. Wine was going to get the story back on track, but she would add another twist and bound off in yet another direction. Turned out that this book was the perfect foil to my mood. If you're like me an you enjoy a good romance involving men in kilts, then Highland Hellcat is a wonderful choice.

HIGHLAND HELLCAT by Mary Wine is a delightful historical romance set in early Scotland. It is well written with depth, details, twists and turns. The characters are enchanting and engaging. It has Scottish lairds, loyalty, passion, romance, sweet sensuality, wit, family loyalty, betrayal, adventure, keeping the peace between rival Scottish clans, friendships and love conquers all. The hero, Connor, is tough, the laird of the Lindsey's clan, a Highlander,,honorable, promised to the eldest Chattan clan's daughter, who he learns has lost her virginity to his enemy, the Douglas clan. He set out to claim one of the Chattan's clan's daughter, which he kidnaps while her father is taking her to the abbey. The heroine, Brina, is sassy, smart, devoted, loyal and promised to the church as the Chattan's youngest and third daughter. Connor kidnaps her while her father is taking her to the abbey. He feels he is owned a daughter, Brina is a virtuous women, a hellcat, for she was raised to obey God only and not man. She is raised not to become a wife, but the bride of Christ. Her eldest sister, betrayed her father by giving in to her sinuous desires, than tossed aside by the man, a Douglas, who only wanted to take her from Connor. Therefore, Connor, does not wish to wed her. Sparks fly become Connor and Brina from the moment they meet until they finally wed. The secondary characters are a story unto themselves for they are also enchanting and engaging. Just let me say I enjoy this author's books and this one is not a disappointment. I would highly recommend this book especially if you enjoy Highlanders, their women, their lust, honor, fast paced, page turning, love of romance and castles. My Thoughts

There is always a soft spot in my heart for a story about a rugged Highlander and the woman he must "tame" to win her heart and this book is no exception. Following reading book 1 To Conquer a Highlander which was the story of Torin and Shannon I quickly found that the story of Connor and Brina was even more to my liking. Both strong willed, both coming from pasts that molded and shaped them into courageous and honorable people they tugged at my heart from the first pages of the book.
Riding through the Highland mists sounds romantic, dangerous, mysterious and at times deadly. Taking the journey with these two fiery characters was an adventure you do not want to miss!
Perfect way to start off my Valentine week reading was to pull author Mary Wine from the list of reads on my Kindle and my shelves!

Connor Lindsay has made a deal to marry Deirdre Chattan as an alliance, but she is no longer pure and has been defiled by Lindsay's enemy which means he cannot marry her because people will not believe their children will be his. So Lindsay kidnaps another sister, Brina, in Deirdre's place but this one was planning to be the bride of Christ so needless to say it is not all smooth sailing.

Most of the book are about Brina adjusting to life with Conner and trying not to break the oath her father made for her. For the most part the banter was interesting and lively. I also found it interesting how innocent Brina was, as a future nun she was never allowed nice things, never praise and no touching. I think the author did a great job conveying how she craved these things but also was challenged by them. I liked Conner as well he was a true highlander all brawny and protective.

I would have preferred more scenes in his head though. Perhaps if I had read book one I would not have so many questions about him. It was also weird to me that really there was no conflict or strife other than Brina's honor on what or whom she made promises to.

Even still it was a solid read. I will definitly go back and try to find book oneTo Conquer a Highlander

I really enjoy Highland Hellcat. It was so fun when Connor realized that his friends sister wasn't the meek mannered woman that he thought she was. In fact, he was thrilled to learned that she was a hellcat all the way to her toes!

Poor Brina, she works so hard to hide her true nature. She's afraid that no one could love her if they truly knew just how much of a temper she has.

These two together are perfect. They play off one another to make a whole. I found myself laughing more then once while I read it.

Your heart will also break for Connor as he tries to take charge of his family home and put it to right. He has lost so much in his past and unfortunately he's not losing. But since he's got Brina with him he'll get through it.

I so much loved the charcters in this book and can't wait to read the next book in the series. It's about Moira (Brina's sister) and Gahan (Connor's friend). I can't wait for their story. Gahan has a lot to make up for in my eyes. Can't tell you why read Highland Hellcat to know why. :)

This was a book I just randomly picked up at my library, I haven't read the first book because I didn't know it was a series but I didn't feel lost at any point.

This was a really good Scottish HR. The main character Connor is pissed because his future bride "dishonored" herself by sleeping with someone else. To console himself he steals another woman for his bride who was supposed to be going into the nunnery. Brina is incredulous that some big highlander thought he had a right to steal her, but when facing the onslaught of his affections she finds herself torn between doing what she wants and doing what she has been told she should. She doesn't want to upset her father or the church, but Connor doesn't seem to be taking no for an answer.

This was an enjoyable HR, I will definitely be going back to find the first book in the series.

Brina Chattan, as a third daughter, was raised to become a nun. When her older sister falls from grace, the sister's intended groom kidnaps Brina for himself. Brina finds that her life will not be the one that she was prepared for.

My only complaint is that the first few chapters of the book unnecessarily listed the Highlander characteristics that are typical in a Highlander romance (honor, watching after their women, fighting, being strong and stubborn, etc.). It was tedious for me.

Otherwise, I enjoyed this book and would love to read more from the author. There was just enough chemistry and emotion and the book left me with a goofy grin on my face. =)

Connor Lindsey is a Highland Laird. He is loyal to his Clan, and his Clan is loyal to him. Connor will do what it takes to find a virtuous wife, even if he has to kidnap her. Brina Chattan has always defied convention, she sees no reason to stop now. Brina has been captured by a powerful Laird and taken to his storm-tossed castle in the Highlands from her home. These two powerful spirits, hearts, and soul crash into a hot mind-bending passion for each other. When a rival Laird's interference nearly tears them apart. Connor discovers Brina has a wild streak that suits him much better than even he could imagine.

Another strong female character in a time where women had no rights and were considered property. She pretty much gave as good as she got. That eternal struggle between man and woman was very well written and it kept my interest. My only complaint is it ended and now I have to find another book to read

My only complaint about these books is that the Heroines can be a tiny bit too stubborn and resistant to change... Oh and *Everyone* Snarls at everyone else. Everyone. I swear you could find the word at least once on every single page in the book.
