Loren was stalking his prey in the plains when the world suddenly changes. The violent alteration of everything he knows leaves him determined and resolute.
While he may be short his heart knows no bounds and he's determined to master the new leveling mechanics, quests, and objectives.
On an epic journey, Loren seeks out what matters to him most: family. While dodging abominations, monsters and dangers, abound, he'll prove he's one goblin all should fear.
I struggled to progress in this book. For me, it was just bland.
The story is about a goblin during a system apocalypse - everyone gets a system, stats, and an AI assistant, and must grow stronger or die. As a literal monster, the goblin encounters other races and racism as part of his struggles. But a character's race means nothing - for example, the main character borrows clothing from orcs without any concern about fit, and can fight them on an even footing. I wondered why this was a "goblin apocalypse" if we never learn anything about goblins other than their green skin.
The AI assistant is inconsistent. It's usually unhelpful and rude, but occasionally is friendly or expresses concern about the MC's well-being. It often answers questions with "I'll tell you later". The MC also varies between annoyance of the AI and missing him when he's gone. I found the inconsistency confusing, because the switches seemed to happen without reason.
The numbers & stats feel arbitrary. When we first see the MC's stats, they're all below 10 and considered terrible - but we don't know what's normal and have no point of reference. The next time we see them, they're much higher because the AI allocates stats offscreen. Later they're significantly higher still, but we don't see really see improvement in the MC's capabilities.
Overall I tried to enjoy the book, but it just didn't hold my attention.
Well, this one started out well enough, and overall it wasn't a bad story. The thing is though: By the end of the book, the main character was worlds beyond where he started, and for the most part, there was very little evidence of how he got there. Sure, he leveled a few times, and he got points invested to improve, but nothing that would account for his amazing growth. Add to that, the extreme unhelpfulness of his guide, and seeing how he got from start to finish wasn't adequately explained. Sure, the story was decent enough, and I'd not suggest not reading it, the story is fine as far as it goes, I just prefer for my LitRPG stories to have a bit more progression in them. This one seemed to skip large swaths of levelups, which doesn't really give a full picture of start to finish. Other than that, I thought the story was a good one. Obviously, depending on your POV, none of these things might bother you, and you can enjoy the story in all it's green glory as it was intended.
Really fun take on the genre. I especially love the perpetrators of the apocalypse. Very fitting. So much introduced near the end, I can’t wait to see what happens next.
As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.
I’m new to the genre but trying to step out of my comfort zone. This well written tale of fantasy and adventure certainly succeeded. Interesting characters, good world building makes for a fun read. Reason for 4 star instead of 5 because of formatting. Too much white space for my taste.
I don't have much to say about this book, it was okay it just wasn't for me and that reflects in the fact that it took me 8 days to read it instead of a few hours.
A role-playing (RPG), apocalyptic, sci-fi book by a new author.
The author dives right into the action after a short get-acquainted chapter. This genre is new to me, but I loved it. Will be looking forward to more books by Sean Hall.
Loren is just like any other goblin. In fact, he’s smaller and weaker than most. To change that, Loren decided to go out and hunt a dangerous predator for both food and prestige. That is when the apocalypse happened.
This is a really interesting twist on the post apocalyptic genre. The MC is not a human. In fact, humans are only mentioned. The characters are really enjoyable. This zero to OP was really well done!
